Where and when to buy baby clothes?

I'd love to get some colourful and unisex clothes for LO due beginning of November. Does anyone have any tips of where to get them from, how many and what sort of sizes? Is it better to get lots up to 3 months and then they're a little big? TIA :)

@Leleophants my DD was a big baby at 8 pound 9. I recommend getting size Upto 1 Month, and then 0-3 Months, unless you and DH? Are small then also get some newborn.

I find the clothes that wash best are from next, mothercare seem on the small size, Asda seems to bobble fast, Tesco & Sainsbury's are decent and we get all vest socks bibs etc from primark as they aren't seen 😁

Also get vests in newborn! Thats what fit my DD for the first month and like I said she was 8 pound 9 xx

My wee ones were 7.7lb and 7.8lb and they needed the tiny baby size for the 1st month or so. long legs little body 😂

I only got 1 pack of newborn baby grows and vests the rest I got 0-3 & 3-6. Next and H&M for outfits, Sainsbury’s & Asda for baby grows and vests. Got a few baby grows and leggings from matalan. I’ll be buying clothes after he’s here x

Thanks! Anyone else feel more excited about buying baby clothes when you don't know the sex? You can be so much more inventive and it means I'm not doing pink of blue which I'm quite proud of :D

I probably will get some more gendered stuff later, but I like starting out this way.

My lb was 6.1lbs (predicted over 7) so we didn't have anything that fit him! My parents had to do a dash to buy small baby onesies.
Personally I love M&S and Morrison's. Both wear really well and Morrison's are great quality and value. H&M I find a bit cheap and don't wash well.

Im a fan of next & gap for baby clothes wash & last well. I have tiny babies so newborn was way too big for all mine but id say most fit newborn.
Id start buy from when im 6month pregnant.

Big fan of John Lewis (Heritage range), Mayoral, and Debenhams for special things. Primark or Asda George for the day to day sleepsuits etc.

Tobebythesea · 30/04/2019 13:30

Next, John Lewis and Tesco clothes are great quality, lovely and soft. I found Morrisons babygrows easily got holes in and bobbled. Mini Club at Boots I found quite rough material and Primark sizes are very small.

I find M&S are really good for a variety of prints and colours, wash well, and a good price. When they get a bit bigger (toddling) H&M are good for the same reasons; variety of prints and colours, wash well, good price.

I bought 0-3mo for DC1 and DC2 and had no issues with it (7lb4oz and 8lb13oz, respectively). Didn’t bother with newborn and 0-1mo didn’t exist in M&S at the time! I’m expecting DC3 now and have done the same, just vests, sleepsuits and a couple of cardigans in 0-3mo and hats. More clothes can be bought later.

They were slightly baggy on DC1 in the early days, but not terribly so. The priority was to have sufficient supply for poo explosions and vomit!

John Lewis stocks some really nice stuff, from own range and other brands, but I mainly buy those in the sales as they can be discounted quite a bit.

Boots do some lovely colourful and patterned stuff.

We got a few packs of vests and sleepsuits in newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3. Also a few cardis and hats. Had to go and buy tiny baby stuff when daughter was born 6+lbs.

I would say don't go nuts on anything (tempting as it is!) until baby is here as different shops seem to suit different baby shapes, just like us I guess.

Also don't buy too far ahead as your baby might grow in fits and starts - things may be out of season by the time baby grows into it or they might shoot past a particular size at lightening speed! I have lots of lovely clothes that never made it out the wardrobe.

I got most day to day stuff from Asda or primark, they grow out of it so fast and if you have a really bad poonaami you can just throw it away! Other people bought us nicer clothes and what they bought us together with a few packs of cheap vests and sleepsuits was enough to be honest! We bought most stuff in 0-3 months and then a very small amount of newborn.

Andrea91 · 30/04/2019 16:58

If I'm honest I've brought cheap aldi tiny baby grows and 0-3 months pack of 3 for about £3.99. Just so I dont have to get family to dash away if baby isn't what's estimated.

Orangedaisy · 30/04/2019 17:02

Try your local charity shops. Seriously. They often have brand new with tags or barely worn (possibly just washed) in the little sizes in particular as they get such little wear. I know it’s nice to buy new but wait til they’re bigger and you get more wear from it.

Parker231 · 30/04/2019 17:05

Next is a disaster for babies as everything is divided by gender- nothing neutral in the small sizes unless you buy white. I hate that shop. I had b/g twins and bought most of their clothes from Frugi and some of the continental ranges.

LittleKitty1985 · 30/04/2019 17:56

My LO has pretty much just lived in Primark sleepsuits since day one. They have plenty of unisex designs and will last the 2 months (& million washes) you'll need them for and then are so cheap you won't feel bad throwing them away when you move up to the next size.

My advice would be to buy 6 newborn & 6 one month size initially (& keep the receipt so you can return the smaller ones if you have a really big baby). You'll probably get gifted lots too.

NeWmAmA84 · 30/04/2019 17:56

I love H&M, Next, M&S and Zara, they all wash really well and are modern prints/ design. Also found F&F Tesco have been good too! It can depend on your baby, but I’ve found for some things Zara and H&M can run small and M&S, Next are generously sized. You’ll soon find out what works for your baby but I would get a few things in first size too.

LittleKitty1985 · 30/04/2019 18:02

Oh and you'll need vests to go underneath for a winter baby - don't bother getting pretty/patterned ones as they'll be hidden under sleepsuits or other layers. You'll also need at least a dozen bibs and a couple of hats.

If you wanna splurge on something I'd say buy several nice bibs that will go with different colours and patterns, as they won't grow out of these Smile
