Just finished a packet of pregnacare..I can't remember if I continued to take them passed 12/14 weeks with my other children...when did you all stop taking them? Wondering if I should order some more or if they aren't really needed now?

My midwife says to continue all through but I'm crap at remembering and probably take them 3 days out of 7 🤦🏼‍♀️

NowWeAreSuckingDiesel · 21/04/2019 09:14

You can take them throughout but you don't need to. You don't need to take folic acid after 12/13 weeks so a normal multi vitamin in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters is fine although folic acid won't do any harm.
Make sure a multi vit doesn't have have a high dose of retinol vitamin A though

Lou573 · 21/04/2019 09:20

I was advised to stop taking folic acid after 12 weeks as it’s been linked to tongue tie.

Teddybear45 · 21/04/2019 09:32

I’ve been told to take it throughout

dementedpixie · 21/04/2019 09:33

Don't need folic acid after 12 weeks but you're supposed to continue with vitamin d

LittleKitty1985 · 21/04/2019 09:39

You should only take vitamin D, unless you're on a restricted diet in which case you should supplement that (I took iron and omega because I'm vegetarian). You should NOT take anything contained folic acid after 13 weeks as it causes tongue tie and you will struggle to breastfeed.

LittleKitty1985 · 21/04/2019 09:40

*any tablets containing folic acid

HJWT · 21/04/2019 09:48

@LittleKitty1985 it doesn't say that on any vitamins iv taken, and neither has my midwife. My DD didn't have tongue tie, all of my nieces did though & my sister never took folic acid...

harper30 · 21/04/2019 09:49

Can I ask for evidence of a link between folic acid after 12 weeks and tongue tie?
I've looked online and cant find anything scientific at all to suggest there is a link?

I personally took the pregnacare multivitamin throughout my whole pregnancy as I found that when I stopped taking them briefly my energy levels really dropped.
I also have been taking the pregnacare breastfeeding multivits for nearly 10 months.
Good luck with your pregnancy OP 😊

harper30 · 21/04/2019 09:49

Should have said, I took those vits that have folic acid for the whole 40 weeks near enough and my DD didn't have tongue tie whatsoever

Teddybear45 · 21/04/2019 09:59

@LittleKitty1985 - utter bollocks. Taking supplements actually helps breastfeeding as it replaces the nutrients mum loses.

Cosmogirl86 · 21/04/2019 12:45

Definitely take at least vitamin d as per NHS guidance. I take pregnacare on the advice of my midwife, and also because I stocked up when it was on offer in Tesco so I have loads!

I have never heard a link between folic acid and tongue tie. If it was a genuine risk, we would be told

kgeal3 · 21/04/2019 13:10

Thanks everyone x

Folic acid is just useless after 12 weeks so pointless buying expensive pregnancy vitamins

Cosmogirl86 · 21/04/2019 13:50

That isn't actually true - it's true that the neural tube is fully formed at 12 weeks so the risk of defect like SB has passed, but that doesn't mean folic acid is now pointless. It's also used in cell division and growth, which is definitely needed!

Teddybear45 · 21/04/2019 13:59

Women who take folic acid before and throughout pregnancy (beyond first trimester) reduce their risk of preclamsia, premature delivery, and other complications. At least that’s what I was told by my IVf consultant. And I’d believe him over any old wives tale or midwife personally.

Lantern92 · 21/04/2019 20:31

I take Pregnacare, I also take magnesium to help leg cramps and blood pressure and vitamin D. The magnesium has really sorted out the leg cramps! And my blood pressure dropped back into normal levels. I believe one of them helps with fatigue also! I forgot to take mine for a few weeks around 20 weeks and felt rubbish, soon as I started loading up I feel much better (especially the fatigue) I am 30 weeks on Tues
