Wondering if there are any Vegan mom's around as personally I nor my OH don't know of any or anyone who raised a Vegan child.

Any help would be much appreciated as only taken scrutiny since and this is after a long fertility journey with a suprise positive test.. feeling blessed.

Thankyou!

If you’re on Facebook - maybe join Vegan Food U.K. group and ask there? There’s probably vegan parenting groups too.
Or post this in the vegan mumsnet threads xx

Congrats!

I like the look of this resource: static1.squarespace.com/static/59f75004f09ca48694070f3b/t/5a5a4935ec212dd5067a0622/1515866446317/Eating_well_Vegans_Oct_2017_final.pdf

Plan to use it when it’s my turn.

I'm vegan and just found out im pregnant, due in December, my partner is not vegan so we haven't as yet had a conversation about what baby would be, but I will be vegan for the pregnancy regardless, would love to hear of others experiences too!

snoopy18 · 21/04/2019 05:09

Hey I just had my boy in March & had a healthy pregnancy :) Raising him for sure vegetarian and attempting vegan since we are on the cusp of it ourselves. Myself more than the other half!

Feel free to inbox if you want would be fab to connect!

I was on some of the vegan fb groups for kids / family but found some of them a bit too intense with their opinions & not very helpful but worth a shot!

FruitBowl1991 · 21/04/2019 07:01

Thankyou! I am probably 99% Vegetarian and plan to go full Vegan on our next food shop! I know a few Vegan mom's but wanted to see everyone's experiences and what was easy/hard not just the normal x

I'm vegan and just got a bfp for December baby. Will be my first vegan pregnancy as I was just vegetarian with my first two. Dh and I are vegan and the kids are at home with us, but we are a bit more relaxed with them having the odd ice cream or chocolate when out with their friends so they're not left out.

I'm not too worried about a vegan pregnancy as we eat healthily and I take a supplement.

stucknoue · 21/04/2019 07:31

I have good friends who raised their children vegan 20 years ago long before it was fashionable or even accepted by the medical community. They are healthy young adults

squifflybobs · 21/04/2019 07:55

I'm nearly completely plant based and kids aged 8 and 10 are too and have been since aged 2 and 4. I can't guarantee they don't have the odd sweet which isn't vegan when not with me, but also keen they start making their own choices. They wouldn't eat anything which looks like it's been alive and they now don't really like milk/eggs/cheese on their own, but the hidden stuff in cakes etc is harder for them.

We try and keep vegan processed food to a minimum as well and the kids are very healthy on it . They do take B12 / omega 3 supplements and we get their blood checked periodically- all has been ok. They eat a pretty wide range of foods - only things they actively dislike are "slimy" veg like Aubergine and mushrooms.

We are lucky to live really near a vegan bakery which makes every type of cake/pie/doughnut you can think of and give them those to take to parties etc so they don't miss out. To be honest there are so many dairy/egg intolerant kids around that a surprising number of parties have a vegan cake as the main cake.

Congrats on your pregnancy

I’m a pregnant vegan, partner is veggie but haven’t really discussed yet which way we’ll go with the child’s diet (it’ll certainly be one or the other though). It’s perfectly possible to raise a healthy vegan kid and everyone raising children should be thinking about their diet and nutrients anyway, not just vegans :)

FruitBowl1991 · 21/04/2019 12:22

Thankyou all for your replies! We will both be Vegan and raise our child Vegan, what we wanted to know was does anyone have any tips or anything that we may of forgotten/they've experienced in raising Vegan? x

Hi all, I am a vegan. My husband is not even vegetarian but is vegan at home - I love cooking so I do most of that and then he is more than happy to eat the vegan food 😁

We are expecting in December so a long way to go!

What I have noticed so far is from researching pregnant women's RDA for various vitamins and minerals. Not long before becoming pregnant, I had a full blood work up testing for deficiencies etc for an unrelated reason and everything possible was being met by my diet (I do take B12 supplements). The RDA for some is a good bit higher than usual though so I checked into the Pregnacare I am taking and it meets most of the requirements so all good there! The thing I have really noticed is that I need to work on my calcium intake. My vitamin doesn't fulfill the requirement. So I guess that's one to watch!

We still have plenty of talks to have about exactly how to raise the baby. Words of wisdom and experience welcome!

Flopdoodle · 21/04/2019 20:21

I'm mainly vegan and have a 5 year old who also eats the same at home although makes their own choices at school. Transitioning was easier than I thought but it has been tricky to get them to embrace lentils and beans, but they are more than happy to not eat meat or fish or eggs, chocolate is more tricky, especially on a day like today!

LadyWithLapdog · 21/04/2019 20:23

Squifflybobs are you in the UK? I’m surprised about your kids having regular blood tests just for having a vegan diet (if no other clinical indication).

Flopdoodle · 21/04/2019 20:31

Also, I'm in a Facebook group called vegan pregnancy and parenting which has been quite interesting (if you can get past all the anti vax versus vaccinating parents slagging matches!)

RMarieClaire · 21/04/2019 22:21

Pleased to see this thread as today had a massive family argument over our decision to raise our daughter - due July - vegetarian. I'm a flexible vegan (so vegan 99% of time, vegetarian otherwise - ie when I'm desperately craving fried eggs and can't stomach anything else ), DH is neither but understands that for moral reasons it's important for me that our daughter doesn't eat meat.

To be honest, and maybe this is because I only went vegan about 2 years ago, I think it could be a hard life for a child as choices just aren't good enough yet and I worry it might make things difficult at school/friends houses etc, but I completely commend anyone choosing this route.

My plan is we'll eat mostly vegan at home but be more flexible when out. I was shocked by the vehemence of peoples response to this. It's really no one else's business but I found it quite upsetting

Check out Ellen Fisher, Jinti Fell and Sarah Lemkus on YouTube, they’re all vegan vloggers with young kids/babies
