Side effects of whopping cough jab

Hi, I had the whooping cough vaccine yesterday and today I have been sick a few times, very tired, and nauseous. Do you think this is a result of the vaccine, if so how long will it last? I also started iron tablets this week but have been fine up until today whilst taking them. Other than that it must be a bug. Hoping not. X

I'd also like to know what the side effects of this are. I'm quite wary of vaccines in pregnancy. I'm supposed to have this one soon but I just can't bring myself to go for it...

Sunshinegirl82 · 20/04/2019 17:45

Vomiting is not listed as a side effect on the NHS website so I suspect this is more likely to be a bug (although I'm not a doctor so if concerned I would seek medical advice).

The vaccine is not live so any side effect is really just your immune system responding to the vaccine. I had a slightly sore arm for a couple of days but that was it.

The whooping cough vaccine is really important because it is given to protect the baby. Whooping cough can be fatal to newborns and instances of it have risen in recent years so it really is a good idea to get it done. Extensive research shows that it is safe in pregnancy and the benefits outweigh any risks.

Sounds to me like unfortunate timing, almost certainly not vaccine related. As PP said, the whooping cough vaccine is a really important one given the resurgence in pertussis outbreaks the last few years. Really no joke for young children...

Get well soon!

sandrine it's obviously your call but please please consider having the whooping cough one. The research is sound. The side effects are minimal for the majority of people and if it makes you feel better, it's not a live vaccine.

Whooping cough is horrific and it kills babies. If it doesn't kill them, many are hospitalised regardless and it causes extreme distress and pain.

This is the reality and it can be prevented

It certainly could be a side effect of the jab:

Mild side effects of Tdap may include:
• Pain, redness, or swelling in the arm where the shot was given
• Mild fever
Headache
• Tiredness
Stomach upset, including nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Muscle aches and pains
Swollen glands

I had mine a couple of weeks ago, and had a very sore shoulder for days afterwards, and felt absolutely wrecked. There are quite a lot of quite common side effects to this particular jab, and also quite a few not so common ones. Hope you feel better soon.

horsecrazymumtobe · 20/04/2019 18:16

When I had my whopping cough vaccine the nurse said 'it won't make you feel ill, you might just have a sore arm.' Well my arm was fine but I was so nauseous and sick that evening and until about lunchtime the next day. I thought I must have caught a bug but it literally lasted 12hrs and went as quickly as it came.

I mentioned it to my midwife at my next appointment and she said that some people do feel nauseous after it.

Furble · 20/04/2019 18:18

I also felt really rough for one whole day after the whooping cough this pregnancy. Hope you feel much better sooner OP. Flowers

ftmtobe · 20/04/2019 21:19

I just felt like I had a bit of flu for a couple of days afterwards, but I had mine just after Christmas so could of just been a coincidence!

Middledistancerunner · 20/04/2019 22:05

@Sandrine1982
My last child started coughing at 10 days old. I can tell you there are few things scarier in this world than holding a newborn that was healthy and thinking they could be ill.
At least with me having the vaccine in pregnancy the doctors were able to immediately rule out whooping cough.

Worth its weight in gold that vaccine is.

Melamine · 20/04/2019 22:07

I felt horrendous for 24 hours post jab, wasn’t sick but so nauseous, tired, etc. It disappeared after that. 👍

Oly4 · 20/04/2019 22:17

No amount of nausea is as bad as having a child die from whooping cough. Please have the jab.
It has been given to millions of pregnant women with no adverse effects on babies.

I’m sorry some of you felt a bit ill after it. Glad the symptoms disappeared quickly

Lavellan · 20/04/2019 22:37

Just for a positive anecdote I had mine two weeks ago and have felt absolutely nothing except a slightly sore and red arm.

Ps- I asked for it on my left forgetting that's the side I sleep on. Get the opposite side.

DoubtOfTheOrdinary · 20/04/2019 22:45

I don't know about side effects as not had my vaccine yet but for PPs concerned about its safety, my MW told me the vaccine itself doesn't pass the placenta to the baby (something about the molecules being too big and getting filtered out?). The vaccine circulates just in the mum's bloodstream, causing her body to make antibodies, and then it's only her own antibodies that cross the placenta to the baby.
She explained it more clearly than I've done.

Irishnames · 20/04/2019 23:24

Sounds like it could be from above posters
But I had absolutely no side effects from the jab. Iron tablets however made me very sick!

Justus22 · 21/04/2019 00:28

Thanks for all the responses. I've been much better today and no more vommitting or nausea. I agree with the above who say its definitely worth having. I never have flu jab usually either but I have in pregnancy for my baby, I felt the same about this vaccine, it can be the difference between life or death for a newborn, that's all the info I needed and I too am a little sceptical of some vaccines but I reason that I don't think they're dangerous I just don't know how beneficial they are for us so when it comes to my kids or risking anyone else's health (through me not taking them) I trust the professionals and have them. The side effects for me weren't nice but short lived, I posted more to figure out if the way I was feeling was connected to the vaccine. I too read the NHS guide that didn't mention being sick but other online sites do as previous poster put, sounds like it did from others experience.x

I had zero side effects from this vaccine. Or any others I've had. The only side effect I've experienced is not catching entirely preventable deadly or life changing diseases.

avacadooo · 21/04/2019 02:08

I was dreading the whooping cough jag, last had it when I was 16 and it hurt.
This time round I had a slight allergic reaction to it ended up in triage but nothing dramatic I was fine to leave after being checked over, I did have a headache after but my arm has been a nightmare, 8 weeks since and I have a lump where I got stabbed and it aches often so I think the nurse has gone too deep with the needle and angered a muscle but I would still get it all over again if I had to for the baby's sake. I'd rather be ill and give my child a head start because whooping cough is nasty.
