Heartburn

So I've never suffered with heartburn in previous pregnancies but past 2 days with this one (19 weeks) and I am seriously struggling to the point where it burns so much I am throwing whatever I consume back up (including most liquids too).

I've tried Gaviscon, Rennies and some prescribed stuff my MIL takes (I know I should take other people's prescription meds but it does say it's fine to take during pregnancy).

What can I try next? I can't face another sleepless night and day, certainly can't face being sick any longer either (thought morning sickness had left me at 16 weeks!).

Have you tried Zantac? I take it at night as it's worse then and it's a god send! (Was recommended by a fellow pregnant lady, it says to check with a doctor first but I just went for it and it's worked for me)

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 19:25

I haven't tried Zantac, can I purchase it from a pharmacy? I'm assuming it's okay for pregnancy then too?

Is the prescribed stuff Ranitidine? If so, that's the same as Zantac.

Celebelly · 19/04/2019 19:31

Go to your doc and ask for either Ranitidine or if that hasnt worked Omeprazole.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/04/2019 19:34

Ranitidine you can take double the dose.

horsecrazymumtobe · 19/04/2019 19:39

I was in the same boat last weekend. Popped to Asda and bought Zantac (off the shelf) and it has been a godsend! Have been taking 1 x tablet in the evening (you can take 2 a day if needed) and heartburn is no more! Checked with my midwife who said it was fine to take.

NanooCov · 19/04/2019 19:39

Try sleeping propped up at night too. Helped me a little when I had it with second pregnancy.

villainousbroodmare · 19/04/2019 19:39

It's horrific, isn't it? Poor you. Omeprazole was all that worked for me.

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 19:41

I've no clue what the prescribed stuff is as it's all in French (MILs French).

Tbh I've been double dosing the lot of it. Took it all together about 20 minutes ago as feel like I'm gonna start going mad from lack of sleep.

Can't get to a bloomin GP for another week. It's bank holiday and then I've serious deadlines at work and can't miss them or the meetings.

Doesn't help that I can feel my bloody anxiety playing up about it all too which also affects the chest area 🤦‍♀️

Bicarbonate of soda in water. 1tsp to a half pint. Works in about 60 seconds and the effect lasts hours. All safe for baby and without the calcium build up from rennies or the expense of Gaviscon. I buy the Dr Oetker (so?) one for £1 a tub which lasts ages. It's amazing. Saved me this pregnancy, wish I'd tried it last time!

ChristinaMarlowe · 19/04/2019 19:49

*sp not so!

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 19:50

Trying it now ChristinaMarlowe ! Thankfully got a load in as I often bake

I second the Zantac/ranitidine advice. It lasts 12 hours so I take my tablet just after I’ve had my lunch and that tides me over through the night and then I’m never bad on a morning anyway. Has massively helped with the stuffy nose thing I had going on too- reflux is SO glamorous 🙈

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 19:55

Okay so it has eased it a bit I think but it's still there ChristinaMarlowe .

I'll head back to the pharmacy and see what they can supply me with

Sometimes I used to find that nibbling slowly on a piece of plain white bread helped.

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 22:14

Well I think I'm gonna just have to admit defeat on the sleep front until I see a GP.
Thank you all though!

Try chewing gum, the stronger peppermint the better. Terrible heartburn with both my DS's and this was far more effective than anything else I tried.

They say heartburn in pregnancy is caused by the production of hair and both of my boys were born with beautiful heads of soft shiny dark hair Smile

ChristinaMarlowe · 20/04/2019 10:09

Morning Twittle, you can make it stronger (more bicarb to less water) if necessary. I take Lansoprazole when not pregnant - changed from Omeprazole due to scares about stomach cancer - and honestly won't go back on either now as the bicarb works so well for me. I hope you something that really works well for you, heartburn is the worst!

TwittleBee · 21/04/2019 08:01

soontobefour4 DS was born with full head of thick brown hair but never had heartburn with him haha!

It appears to have left me now, well at least I didn't have it last night whixh surprises me after all the bbq meat I ate!
