I think I’m pregnant!

Hello :) this is my first proper post but I’ve been a long time lurker on this site for years.

Bit of background:
Didn’t think I could have children - not been told anything medically but it just did not happen with my ex partner over a number of years. Fast forward to now, I came off the pill in November and began ttc with my partner (thinking it would never happen!)

I’m currently two weeks late, have very sore boobs, had a couple of hot flushes and have been sick once (completely out of the blue). I’ve also been told my moods are all over the place.

Yesterday I took 3 tests and this morning took a further 2 and they’re all positive but I’m scared to believe I’m actually pregnant! I’m going to get a digital test later.

If I am pregnant what do I do next? Do the doctors need to do a test or do I just inform them?

Sorry for rambling on - I just never thought I’d be in this position!

How wonderful! I was in your position almost 16 years ago to the day!

I think you just make an appointment to see your GP after a long weekend and that will put you in the system for a general health check over by your GP and booking in for scans etc

How exciting I'm very happy for you.

Smile

Firstly congratulations!!!
What you need to do is contact the GP surgery and inform the receptionist that you are pregnant and they will give you the phone number for your community midwife and you contact them to make a booking in appointment Grin The Midwife will ask you a few health questions over the phone and for the date of your last period etc. and give you an estimated due date and a date for your appointment.

Oh and buy and start taking a Folic Acid!
Good Luck!! Thanks

Onlyinanemergency · 19/04/2019 08:02

Congratulations! Contact your GP and they will either give you an appointment at which they will refer you on to midwife care, or they will just give you a number to self refer. You will then see a midwife at around 10 weeks for a booking appointment. No need for GP to do a test as over the counter tests are so reliable - no such thing as a false positive! Wishing you a smooth pregnancy.

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 08:08

Thank you :) typical this happens over a bank holiday weekend - Tuesday seems a long way off!

I’m just so scared I’m not pregnant (despite the signs and tests) - I’m trying not to believe it until it’s confirmed by a medical practitioner but it’s hard not to get carried away with the hope!

SoHotADragonRetired · 19/04/2019 08:12

Tbh no medical practitioner is going to confirm it until the 12 week scan, there is no point. If a home test says you are pregnant, you are pregnant and they will accept you at your word.

Your GP surgery will tell you the procedure now but increasingly you just self refer or are referred straight to the community midwives and they will set up a booking-in for somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks.

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 08:16

Thank you - I’ll contact my GP on Tuesday then and go from there :)

You don't need a digital, it's just a waste of money if 5 other tests have already told you you're pregnant! I didn't bother using one.

Congratulations!

Just pop in to your local GP or give them a call. Each area is different In terms of what the next step is but your GPs practice will tell you.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

Shelbybear · 19/04/2019 08:37

Aw that's lovely news, congratulations!

Call your doctor and ask whether you need to see the doctor or the midwife as you've found out your expecting. Often seeing the GP is a waste of time they don't do anything, don't even check your pregnant!

You'll get booked in with a midwife when your are around 8-10 weeks pregnant (count from the first day of your last period). They'll take urine and blood and ask a million questions. Then you'll have your scan around 12/13 wks.

Good luck with your pregnancy 🤰

WildFlower2019 · 19/04/2019 08:43

@forevercurious reading your update, in many areas of the country, a GP won't even see you! I was seeing my GP for an unrelated issue last pregnancy and just happened to find out the day before. I told her and she didn't even retest me. She said the tests on the shelves are just as accurate as theirs, so if I had two positives, it was positive!

A midwife will only see you when you're around 8 weeks and just ask you questions/fill in a form. And you won't be scanned until you're 12 weeks.

So if the tests say you're pregnant, you're pregnant!

HopeMatters · 19/04/2019 08:51

Congratulations!

Your GP won't confirm it with a separate test if you've already had positive results on your own.

Just call and ask whether you need to see a GP or go straight to midwife care.

Thanks everyone. Think I just needed some reassurance! The day of my last period was the 7th of March so online calendars have suggested I’m 6 weeks gone with a due date the 12th of December.

Good morning
I was just hoping for some advice , I am due on in 3 days but Felt slightly different so done a clear blue early detection test which I got a positive result yesterday morning , I have since done a digital which says not pregnant and a cheap Sainsbury’s one also negative . This is the first time in 7 years I have even thought might be ( fertility problems ) just wondering if anyone thinks this might be an evap line and not a positive result ! So confused .many thanks

I think I’m pregnant!
Kel38 · 19/04/2019 09:04

Sorry I’m new to the site and think I’ve posted on someone’s post ! Sorry xxx

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 09:57

Hi @Kel38 to me that test looks positive but I am in no means an expert. Could it be that the other cheaper tests haven’t been picked it up because it’s so early on?

I hope you get the result you’d like :)

Aw OP congratulations. Have you been having folic acid? If not then you start that straight away. As others have said you needn't see a GP, just get booked in with a midwife and go from there. I went to my GP and he was just like er why are you here? Lol
@kel38 That test looks positive to me. It's just like mine was a few days before I was due on and now I have a baby son! The digital ones need a higher level of the pregnancy hormone so may not show as positive for a few more days yet. Might be worth trying a First Response test as they do an early detection one which will show up from before your period is due. Good luck!

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 11:41

I’ve started folic acid this morning & have brought a digital test to put my mind at rest

agteacht · 19/04/2019 13:38

Aw congrats OP. I am due 9 December so just before you. I've known since 8dpo and it's a torturous wait so you have definitely done it the right way round 👍

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 14:25

@agteacht thank you :) congratulations to you too! I was so in denial that I’d fall pregnant I wasn’t even bothered about testing until yesterday when my DP said he thought it was about time. But now every time I have a pain or feeling I’m questioning if it’s normal - I’m sure this is common though! Have you had many symptoms?

OP posts:
forevercurious · 19/04/2019 14:26

that was meant to say in denial that I couldn’t fall pregnant

OP posts:
agteacht · 19/04/2019 17:00

Well you are now!! :)

I have had cramps and sore breasts on and off, nausea in the morning but no actual vomiting. The main thing for me is extreme fatigue. Got up at 8 today and then later had a three hour nap!!!

Also been waking up far earlier than normal, like 5am on weekdays. Been putting that down to lack of caffeine and booze as I typically had three coffees a day before and a glass of wine most eves...

Have you noticed any yet?

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 18:03

I’ve been extremely tired and experiencing back ache but I put both of those down to my busy, active job. Sore breasts, some cramping similar to period pain. Generally I just feel pretty rubbish. Plus, like you, I’ve also been waking up around 5am which is not great!

Is this your first? :)

OP posts:
agteacht · 19/04/2019 19:09

Yes my first :) also yours?

I had a MC over a year ago so this is much awaited. And I'm getting on - 36!!

The tiredness is extreme eh. I might start going to work earlier from next week as this 5am waking is pointless otherwise!

forevercurious · 19/04/2019 21:48

Sorry to hear about your MC Flowers

Yes this is my first (I’m 25) although my partner has a child from his previous relationship and she lives with us half of the time :)

You’re lucky you’re able to choose the hours you work! I’m dreading getting morning sickness and having to work through it.
