Listeria from house fly

Hi,
Just curious to know if a house fly can transfer listeria.
I'm pregnant due in 2 months and we have quite a few house flies due to the humidity.
I worry because I just watched a fly land on some defrosting chicken and land over lots of other stuff in my kitchen and wonder if now it has spread listeria or any other harmful bacteria.

All advise is appreciated

Please also note I'm a first time poster so unsure if I have done this correctly. Feedback appreciated.

House flies spread over 300 types of bacteria (inc eColi,) so pregnant or not, I wouldn't be eating anything that a fly had crawled over.

@TwigTheWonderKid yeah I have not eaten anything the fly has landed on that I know of. What I'm worried about is that he fly has landed all over the kitchen so if I touch anything the fly has landed in and then ingest it will I be putting myself at risk or should I disinfect the whole kitchen ?

Are you the same lady that has also asked about toxoplasmosis? Don't worry about this, just make sure services are cleaned before preparing food and your chicken is going to be cooked so will be fine also.

kaelaAmumma2b · 19/04/2019 00:09

Sorry should I be concerned if toxoplasmosis I'm confused.

No I just wondered if you were a lady from another thread. You shouldn't be concerned about anything. Just follow normal hygiene procedures as you would whether you were pregnant or not Smile

kaelaAmumma2b · 19/04/2019 00:38

Okay, but it shouldn't cross contaminate onto anything else say if I touch a spot a fly landed on and then touched a cup I'm using?

You're being very anxious @kaelaAmumma2b which is something I recognise from my own pregnancies. Flies fly around all the time. There are fewer than 200 cases of listeria each year in the uk (I'm assuming you're in the uk?). 200 people out of over 66 million people. The risks are negligible in this case.

Have you been very anxious during your pregnancy?

Buombalayo · 19/04/2019 01:21

*during the rest of your pregnancy that should say

Teddybear45 · 19/04/2019 05:53

If it’s cooked through and piping hot you could eat the flies along with the chicken lol

ChrisPrattsFace · 19/04/2019 11:46

Over cook so piping hot and clean your surfaces... you’ll be fine.

scratchbass · 19/04/2019 15:47

Don't leave things uncovered while they defrost.

If it was raw chicken, the chicken would be fine once cooked but anything the fly landed on could have transferred salmonella on it e.g fruit so make sure it is washed before you eat it.

Listeria isn't really an issue if the food is going to be cooked, it's more of an issue in ready to eat foods.

Clean your kitchen and then use an antibacterial spray.

You should cover food that's out defrosting. Cook it well and germs will be killed

@Buombalayo Hiya ,sorry for the late reply. No I usually am ok but Ive been not sleeping to well , I usually suffer with insomnia and was on sleeping pills which I refuse to take since becoming preggers however I haven't been sleeping so well over the last few days which I'm sure is making me over think everything.

@dementedpixie yeah sorry I don't just have a raw chicken sitting on it's still in it's original packaging. But I heard even the packaging can carry salmonella. I'm just very worried without noticing earlier if I've drunken out of my coffee cup and the fly had landed on it before I could notice.
