Flying at 8 weeks!

Hi, I'm very new to all of this but I would really appreciate some advice from anyone who has flown in the first trimester. I've read a lot about it not being a problem and isn't linked to miscarriage but I've also read a thread full of women who believe it did cause them to miscarry. I've had this holiday booked for over a year and can't cancel without losing all my money. Help! Settle my anxiety around this please!

It’s fine.

I was 9 weeks pg when I flew to Oz with dd1 was 13mo and dd2 was a bean in my tummy.

No evidence that flying harms pregnancy, but holidays do relieve stress so enjoy

I was personally against this as I always found plane journeys make me bleed....when not pregnant. However a colleague who ended up going to the US for egg donation had to fly home within 2 weeks of implantation and went on to have a healthy baby. Believe you me she researched every single bit of the risks and wouldn't have stepped foot on a plane if the risks were proven.

Mamabear12 · 18/04/2019 06:21

I already flew at 3 weeks (went on holiday not knowing I was pregnant and got my positive there!) still early; but everything seems fine. I fly to the US mid May when I’m 7/8 weeks and I hope everything is okay! First pregnancy I flew to US and Switzerland at 4 and 10 weeks and Bahamas 20 weeks. All was fine.

We flew back from Cyprus 1 week post embryo transfer and the day after finding out it was successful. Then went on holiday for 5 weeks 9 days after flying home - was lovely apart from morning sickness and extreme tiredness spoiling my holiday!!

Orchidflower1 · 18/04/2019 06:30

Just make sure you let your insurers know.

eurochick · 18/04/2019 06:35

It's fine. Enjoy your holiday.

redbedheadd · 18/04/2019 06:36

I flew at 10 weeks- totally fine

GemmaJen · 18/04/2019 06:47

I flew 11hrs at 8 weeks. It's fine, wear compression socks and get up and move regularly - you're more at risk of clots. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated too ( if you're anything like me it'll also help you keep active with the thousands of bathroom trips, lol) I will say though, I used to love flying, but two 11hr flights of full on morning sickness nausea and I'd be happy never to see a plane again. But we did have a good holiday and we're currently at 19w.

SnuggyBuggy · 18/04/2019 06:55

I've done this, my advice is to wear something loose or elasticated around the waist as I got really bloated.

TroysMammy · 18/04/2019 07:03

My Dsis was about 9 weeks when she flew to New York for a birthday treat with a friend. She was fine. Baby is now 9 years old.

SherlockSays · 18/04/2019 07:05

I flew at 16 weeks, completely fine.

TrixieFranklin · 18/04/2019 07:07

I flew when I was about 7/8 weeks pregnant with my twins and it was absolutely fine

Worrier2019 · 18/04/2019 07:18

Thank you everyone, this has put my mind at rest a little, I'm just going to try not to think about it and enjoy myself! Grin

I flew to Florida at 13 weeks, 39 weeks now 😊

NewAccount270219 · 18/04/2019 09:02

There is very good evidence that there is no link between flying and miscarriage. Since miscarriage is (sadly) very common, you will get lots of women who flew and then miscarried, but that's sheer coincidence. I actually had three miscarriages and then flew early on in my only successful pregnancy. You could say that shows flying prevents miscarriage - or you could, more rationally, say that they're completely unconnected.

Have a lovely holiday and don't worry!

PBobs · 18/04/2019 09:58

There is no risk due to flying. I flew long haul (9 hours+) at 5 weeks, 12 weeks, 15 weeks, 25 weeks. All return flights at least a week later. I'm also flying long haul next week at 33+5. No return flight for that flight. Touch wood but I have had the most straightforward pregnancy with no complications so far. I'm under the care of two different obgyn in two different countries who have both happily signed me off on various flights. Take a refillable water bottle, wear extra comfy clothing and shoes you can easily slip on and off for when you need the loo. Have a wonderful holiday!

ChaosMoon · 18/04/2019 10:29

Flew at 9 weeks to Canada. DD is now a week old.

I'll second the advice about compression socks, hydration and keeping moving but please don't worry. When miscarriages happen people want something to blame, but it won't actually have been the flight that caused it.

Congratulations and enjoy your holiday!

DieCryHate · 18/04/2019 11:29

I flew out at 7 weeks then home at 8 weeks. 3 hour flight. All was well Smile

GemmeFatale · 18/04/2019 11:55

Loads of us infertile types do ivf abroad and fly in the early stages of pregnancy. Statistically it makes no difference to the end result.

gossipgirl28 · 18/04/2019 12:46

I flew to New Zealand at 21 weeks and back at 25 weeks. Bit uncomfy on the way back but otherwise absolutely fine. I wore compression socks and made sure to move around and drink lots of water. X

Mummytoboyxx · 18/04/2019 13:52

With DS1 I flew at 8 weeks and he’s now 4! This pregnancy I flew to Dubai at 11 weeks and again all fine. I’m now 35 weeks. The only thing I struggled with was awful morning sickness. Just the thought of plane food now makes me feel nauseous 😬 Enjoy your holiday. You’ll be fine! Xx

Justus22 · 18/04/2019 15:13

I've flown in all three pregnancies. My first I'd have been 5 weeks, I didn't even realise as I had an implantation bleed I thought was a light period, so I was drinking cocktails all week, flew home, started a new job and then found out... Baby was very healthy and pregnancy pretty straight forward. Enjoy your holiday. I don't think insurance needs to know at this stage, I never told mine for the trips I made prior to 20 weeks, you'd not need to receive any treatment abroad in such early stages of pregnancy I can think of, maybe an anti d injection for a fall if you have negative blood (sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.) The nausea and sickness would be my only worry but you might be lucky and not suffer and even if you do where you are won't change it just might not be the holiday you imagined. Hope you have a lovely time.

Hi @Worrier2019 ,

I've just got back from Berlin this morning after a 2 hour flight (flee 2 hours there on Tuesday) and everything was totally fine. I also spoke to my MIL about it beforehand (she's a lecturing midwife with 30 years experience) and she said there are no concerns as long as there are no big complications with the pregnancy. The only thing I will say is that it made me feel really nauseous - almost instantly as the plane set off - and I was sick once or twice. I was totally fine after landing though.

Hope this helps and enjoy your holiday! I'm 8w1d by the way x

Hey! Just another one to settle your worries - I fly every week for work so this little bean will be well travelled before they're born! Midwife said keeping up my usual work schedule is fine. Take big bottle of water on board with you, try to get an aisle seat and enjoy the shut eye.
