Flying at 31weeks?

So, we booked a holiday to Greece for a friends wedding before I found out I was pregnant - flights, hotel and hire car, the whole lot! I will be 31 weeks pregnant flying out and 32 weeks flying back. Are we mad to be attempting this? Or should we just cancel now? I was/am so looking forward to it but as this is my first pregnancy I’ve just got no idea what to expect...

Also, any tips on the best travel insurance providers for pregnancy? Thanks!

You need a drs note. I flew at 27 weeks and they questioned me even though I didn't have that much of a bump. Xx

You will need a fit to fly note from your GP or midwife. Plenty of water and exercises while on the plane.

I highly recommend ravenhall travel insurance. Not cheap but covers lots of expenses standard insurers wouldn't.

Hi there. Sorry to piggyback on this point but I have a related question. Do we actually need insurance for EU countries since we're still in the EU? Isn't the EHIC card sufficient? I'll be flying to Spain at 29/30 weeks in June and also a bit concerned. Thanks

I'll be about the same flying to Cyprus in July.

My DH has already suggested that we make moves to cancel, mainly because it'll be so hot once we get out there and I'm just going to be a sweaty mess and we have our 3 year old with us.

We go every year to see family so we are going to go but take it slowly, lots of early nights and shade.

Lots of exercise on the plane, lots of water and your fit to fly letter needs to be dated within a specific timeframe depending on your airline.

Insurance is a must, regardless of the EU as you need insurance specific to third trimester pregnancy that will cover your baby as well as yourself.

I’ve just flown back from Spain at almost 30 weeks, felt fine away and travelling except my back really hurt on the flight back (I’ve broken it before though so think it was a combination of that & pregnancy).

Depends how you feel, your travel company rules & insurance.

I flew with EasyJet, took my notes but no need for a Fit to Fly and I have All Clear Gold travel insurance as I have pre-existing medical conditions. They didn’t charge any extra for pregnancy and had good cover. For about £24 I added my partner to the policy which covered his cancellation costs as well as mine if something happened and I couldn’t go.

Get a doctors note and good insurance, take your notes and check where to call if you need help when you get there. Check with the airline that you are allowed to fly at that gestation. Then go and enjoy yourself! I flew a lot during both my pregnancies up to 35 weeks (shorthaul) and it was fine.

Yeah. I'd go. I'm flying long haul to Greece at 33+5. If you have a low risk pregnancy and things are going well then it should be fine with insurance in place as you rightly say.

All the EHIC card gets you is public healthcare. If you're in a situation where you have a premature delivery and a baby who needs to spend two months in a NICU it won't do anything to cover your accommodation costs, and it won't support you to come home with your baby who may need medical help to travel.

If you were to have a DVT or suspected DVT the advice might be not to fly home so you would have the costs of arranging alternatives yourself.

I flew at 26 weeks and it was fine, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it much further along but all you can do is get v good insurance and wait and see.
