How long did your induction take?

How far gone were you when you were inducted and how long did it take?

I am booked in tomorrow and I'll be 40 weeks and looking to set a "she will be here by x day at the latest" scenario! Although, of course I'm hoping it just happens by itself today 😂

Any tips also gratefully received x x

I just had my induction last week. Induced at 39weeks due to reduced movements. Pessary inserted at about quarter past 7, within 10mins I was contracting every 2mins, lasting 1 and a half mins each. By 10pm I was off the induction ward and onto delivery suite. Ds was born at 10 to 1 in the morning so about 5 and a half hours for first pessary to baby. Managed it on 2 paracetamol, 2 dihydrocodeine and gas and air so same pain relief as my first birth. Found the induction ok but quite intense! At 9cm I was asking for an epidural although it was of course too late by then!

Induced at 39 weeks due to age and medical history. Pessary in at around 1.30pm. Went for a walk and was getting painful legs from start. After 20 minutes was back in room and contractions were timed at being every 5 mins by partner. Pessary removed around 2pm as they got closer together. Daughter born at 10.50pm. Had TENS machine, and gas and air only.

Another women in my NCT group had the pessary then drip due to being over due but then had to have a C-section as nothing was happening.

I've also heard a horror story at a different hospital of a pessary falling out on the floor and the midwife wanted to reinsert it to save money. If they are inserted properly they shouldn't fall out.

I strongly suggest you have a birth partner with you throughout. S/he is your advocate so choose someone who knows they have to stand up for you.

I wasn't believed that my contractions were so frequent and without my partner timing them I would be in trouble. I found out from other women I know who were induced this isn't uncommon so I don't know why I wasn't believed. The one who had a pessary fall out had to fight on her own not to have the pessary reinserted as her birth partner had left. This is really uncommon and I suspect it is a case of medical staff trying things due to their own biases on what they believe about patients.

Waters broke at 40+3. Started on drip at 7pm, baby born the following day at 2.10pm. Best of luck!

Induced at 37+5, delivered at 38+1, I went in on the Monday, induced Tuesday, gave birth Thursday and left hospital on Sunday

whitehalleve · 15/04/2019 06:56

Mine took 2 hours. Smile

HJWT · 15/04/2019 07:03

@spdmum2019 Pessary at 10 AM, waters broken for me at 9PM same day, and baby born at 4.03 AM next morning so from start to finish 18 hours? My cervix was favourable though and I was dilated to a 2 when they broke my waters! 38 weeks pregnant x

Two very different experiences here
1st baby induced at 38+3 via pessary. Started few light contractions 40Hrs after it was Inserted. Then they broke my waters and 12 hrs to baby using forceps which included being stuck on a bed with epidural and monitoring as she didn’t cope well with my contractions. Pretty relaxed although on paper not what I would have wished for.

2nd baby (last week). Pessary In. Immediately contacting 5 in 10 minutes but not doing much. They broke my waters 9 hrs later and she appeared 3hrs later in the pool with just gas and air. Very intense and hard.

Went in at 40+7, given pessary at 1500. Was told it was a different pessary from normal (maybe cytotec?) That either works quickly or it doesnt work. Could only have it as low risk pregnancy and young age. Started contracting at 0000, every 1-2 minute throughout but became more intense as progressed. Struggled to cope just after shift change about 0730/0800 but only 2cm but moved up to labour ward. Did not need any further intervention and baby born 1207. Not a bad induction considering my cervix was clamped shut and baby wasnt even engaged when I was admitted! They say with that pessary I had they come within 24hours

bitchfromhell · 15/04/2019 07:16

At 39 weeks induction lasted 6 days. On the seventh day they performed a section.

earlybirdhasanap · 15/04/2019 08:47

Nine hours from pessary to baby in arms at 40+1. No other intervention needed.

Reastie · 15/04/2019 14:33

Agree with soace on labour ward could be an issue. I was sitting around a waiting room for a few hours then got put onto labour ward. Had to arrive at 9am but first pessary wasn’t given until 8pm that day.
That was on a Monday and dd was finally born via csection on the Friday late afternoon after induction failed. So I’d say you’d have to account for a week worst case scenario. At one point there was talk that I’d have to go home and come back another day as they were so full so that coukd add time on too.

Whoopsies · 15/04/2019 14:57

11 hours from pessary going in to baby being here!!

concernedforthefuture · 15/04/2019 20:37

14 hours from start to birth.

spdmum2019 · 21/04/2019 01:21

FWIW, first pessary went in at 9pm Monday, baby was born this morning just before 5am! Forceps delivery.
