This probably will go down like a lead balloon, but is anyone interested in talking baby clothes and design choices?

My background is in retail and particularly childrens clothing- I was a kids wear manager at Next for a few years, then moved onto Zara kids wear, so my days for about 12 years were literally spent putting together outfits for babies and kids. So I find it interesting and relaxing Smile

I'm now pregnant, we're not finding out what we're having, and even if we did, trying to navigate away from the pink and blue stereotypes. But it seems the retail world is against us! I like bright colours, patterns, not grey's and whites personally. And obviously on a budget, so what we are buying is supermarket prices/ on sale/ secondhand. Nothing over a tenner!

Is anyone else interested in this, or is it just me?

I think it's a bit easier with girls though in that I'd quite happily put a daughter in the things my Ds wears. But as much as I love some bits I've seen in the 'girls' section some lovely bright floral and fruit print rompers that kind of thing. I don't think I'd put Ds in them. I know that's silly really and it's exactly the reason we have boy/girl stuff in the first place and absolutely when he's older if he says he wants to wear something I'll let him. But as a baby putting him in something I think most people would see as girls clothes I wouldn't do.

I've also seen quite a few dinosaur/car/train print stuff that's actually in the girls section on dresses and what not.

@niccilovessundays most of my colourful unisex stuff is Next, Gap or H&M, maybe a bit of Matalan and M&S. I've enjoyed the challenge of finding quirky and interesting bits that will suit both sexes especially when wading through sale stuff online! If we are lucky enough to have another I think we'll probably find out the sex beforehand but s/he will mostly still be wearing their sibling's unisex hand me downs as I know we won't have the money to spend next time round, so I'm making the most of it getting ready for DC1 🙂

Supermarket clothes are almost always heavily gendered or quite plain (but the plain white stuff is just as good as anywhere else's) I've found.

Goodenough06 · 14/04/2019 18:49

I love babies in red and find it quite hard to find... Also, leggings that are not very 'girl' centred seem to be hard to find in supermarkets and high street shops. Love dungarees but agree about poppers being a necessity!!

KnobJockey · 14/04/2019 21:48

GoodEnough definitely try Zara for boys leggings- they're about £8 a pair but are thicker, like a jogger material, and hold their value for resale weirdly. Normally they look more legging like than this, so they may have altered their shape. They get some fab patterns in, and normally release seasonal ones for Halloween, etc.

Zara has some cute unisex stuff in their sections for babies and boys. We bought some good stuff in H&M and Mothercare weirdly.

ScreamScreamIceCream · 15/04/2019 06:32

I loved the Boots stuff my partner got for my daughter at the beginning. Lovely and bright baby gros that are not specifically gendered e.g. striped, dinosaur prints.

My daughter has a JoJo Mama Bebe tunic and leggings where the tunic is pink but has a dinosaur print on it. This was brought in their sale. John Lewis has tried not to go down the specifically gendered route so you get dresses and tops with interesting patterns as well.

My daughter and a friends' daughter due to their percentiles end up in clothes from most retailers boys sections as they are simply longer. So they have lots of blue leggings.

PhoebeBear · 15/04/2019 08:35

@KnobJockey I feel the same! We're due a little boy in August and I really don't want to buy everything blue for him- then again if it were a girl we were having I wouldn't want to dress her all up in pink.
I like more beige/ khaki and kind of like nature colours.. my favourite places are Zara, Next and T K Maxx (can be a bit tricky but sometimes have some hidden gems in there)

MCPT · 15/04/2019 17:32

Just looked at Zara Baby and there's such cute things on there!
Has anyone looked at PatPat before? I've just stumbled across it, some of the stuff is a bit weird (lace baby bodysuits...), BUT they have some really gorgeous brightly coloured animal print jumpsuits etc, all very gender neutral. Has anyone had experience of the quality?

KnobJockey · 17/04/2019 07:50

Tu at Sainsbury's has 25% off this week, so might be worth a look for some basics? They have some Elmer stuff which is nice and bright.

@MCPT I've seen adverts for PatPat but not tried it, but it does look very cute! Some of the stuff seems to be the same as some of the Chinese stuff on eBay, and the pricing is all over the place, so it does make me wonder if it's a wish/shein type site- coming from China and very inconsistent quality. But please report back if you do get some!

We didn't find out last time and we wont find out again. I try to keep my daughter out of too much pink - and actually she mostly likes clothes with animals on! La Redoute often has quite good stuff. I do like Next and H&M. John Lewis often has some good bits, and M&S also particularly for the first year. I buy the occasional scandi bits but it's expensive! Supermarkets are definitely worth a browse, Morrissons, Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco all do good stuff.

Teddybear45 · 17/04/2019 10:42

I like John Lewis’ heritage range. I prefer one or two good quality pieces to wash and rewash rather than a lot of cheap chat. End up spending the same, but can pass the good quality stuff on or sell it when the time comes.

snoopy18 · 17/04/2019 19:12

We didn’t find out the gender of baby and were shopping for unisex type clothes too.

We brought mostly from Baby Gap, TU in Sainsbury’s, Baby Next, Boots & Primark!

CatsForLife · 17/04/2019 19:17

Lose a day on Alex and Alexa - loads of brands, including the Scandi ones, and a great outlet section. I buy a lot of Indikidual in sale. Also, No Pink Please - small business but she’s brilliant.

savageswimmer · 17/04/2019 19:28

Mini rodini is nice but a bit pricey.

Cookit · 17/04/2019 19:37

I like leggings from companies like Fred & Noah and Little Loves Cornwall. Some Polarn O Pyret.

KnobJockey · 25/04/2019 09:12

For all those with a bit more cash to splash than my tight ways, Frugi have a 25% off event and there is some absolutely FAB stuff there! It seems to hold its value well for resale too, with Facebook groups and eBay, if you can keep it clean enough!

Practical clothing is important. I really don’t like seeing young babies in jeans, they look so restrictive and uncomfortable. You don’t want clothing that makes nappy changing difficult either. I hate the babygrows that fasten at the back, it’s so odd... had a couple from Zara like that and as much as I loved the look of them, I could never be arsed using them...

H&M have a fantastic range of neutral coloured clothing. I also avoid the pink/blue stereotyping with all of my DC and have a penchant for stripes. I love M&S clothing too.

outpinked · 25/04/2019 11:23

Oh and Polarn O Pyret do the best sleepsuits ever. The arm and legs have huge cuffs on which fold and unfold so I basically have two babygrows that have fit my DS from birth to now (almost six months). Incredible, well worth the money.

KnobJockey · 25/04/2019 21:25

That's really handy to know @outpinked, thanks!

Hi everyone! Loving this thread, getting me all excited!

Can anyone advise how many outfits you should get for each month? I know they grow very quickly and don't want to overwhelm myself with newborn stuff that won't be any use after the first month!

randomsabreuse · 26/04/2019 06:38

Once you're out and about (e.g. not newborn and you have a sibling) I always want a couple of basic outfits always in the change bag and at least 5 available in case of a bad day with nappy changes/leaks/reflux so would want at least 10 babygro/vest combinations, more if going away without easy access to a washing machine! Worst day with pfb was about 10 outfits for her and 5 for me, neglected 2nd gets small milk home wiped off and ignored and I only change me if uncomfortably soaked, ignoring small vom marksBlush

SimplyPut · 26/04/2019 06:54

I loved (still do) pale blue on DD. She has dark hair and eyes.

Jojo maman do great leggings, £10 each but often 2 for £15. DD and friends DS often rock the same pairs! My favourites have Elmer the elephant on the bum.

Have you all seen how cute some of these Zara trousers and dungarees are? I think I'm going to order the bee ones, and the sunshine dungarees. Sizes are small in this range so beware!

@SimplyPut I used to put DD in turquoise loads, she's blonde with blue eyes and it's such a happy colour! Those leggings do look fab.
