7 week scan - really nervous

Hiya everyone

I have my viability scan tomorrow morning at what is estimated as 7 weeks and I am reallllllly nervous.

I have a lot of symptoms (giant, sore boobs, nausea, fatigue and have gone off most food) so this is reassuring me slightly. However, I'm terrified it will show mmc (I didn't even know these existed until I found out I was pregnant).

This is my first pregnancy so I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies could advise me what to expect tomorrow and hopefully offer some calming/destressing/allow me to sleep tonight words?

Thank you! Xx

What's a viability scan? Is it a private one, or something linked to IVF or something?

MarnieN1 · 12/04/2019 20:10

Hi! It's a private scan (in my case anyway) to make sure there's a heartbeat and everything is progressing as it should - I think they call them reassurance scans too. Smile

Hi op I had one at 7 & 6 and found it really helped me.

I saw the heartbeat which really reassured me as I the chance of miscarriage goes down in % and I was worried as didn’t have many symptoms at the time.

Hope it all goes ok Smile

I concieved with ivf and had a viability scan at 8 weeks.

I personally loved it. It was a vaginal ultrasound, and it showed me a clear heart beat.. And then a twin heartbeat beside it!

I found it very reassuring, however I was in shock and ended up paying for a private scan at 10 weeks to make sure both were OK.

agteacht · 12/04/2019 22:52

Good luck, I am 5+4 so would love to hear how you get on 😀

SunStruck · 13/04/2019 02:17

Good luck, I'm having mine next Thursday a 6+2! Let me know how you get on xxx

lemondaisies · 13/04/2019 03:28

I had one a couple of weeks ago. I have pregnancy symptoms, but due to previous miscarriages, was scared. I had a vaginal ultrasound - it's not painful and I found it no more uncomfortable than a smear. They saw the baby's heartbeat and also measured the length. It's amazing and very reassuring. Hope all works out really well for you tomorrow. Don't empty your bladder!

SunStruck · 13/04/2019 05:42

@lemondaisies amazing! May I ask how many weeks in you had your first scan?

Nowthenforever2019 · 13/04/2019 06:00

I'm prepared to be told I'm wrong here but do these actually help? As soon as you've had one, do you then start worrying again and wanting more and more scans? I also see lots of posts on here when wrong info has been given or there's been no heartbeat unfortunately but the private scans are qualified to tell you more and you wait for an nhs scan anyway. I think it they are positive and benefit you, then great, but I worry that even if it's good news, it's a temporary help as it's not addressed the source of your anxieties.

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and have 4 weeks remaining roughly until my scan. I am obviously hoping for the best but wouldn't get a private scan as I think it would feed into my anxiety instead of relieving it

I am now 13 weeks pregnant and also had a reassurance scan due to previous mmc. You need a full bladder so drink a litre of water an hour before your appointment. They managed to find my baby with the abdominal ultrasound, so you may not need the transvaginal, but I have had a transvaginal scan previously and it doesn’t hurt or anything. I’ll add a picture of my scan. Baby was basically a blob with a heartbeat. You can’t see arms or legs or anything because right now it doesn’t have them. It’s amazing how much changes in the next five weeks.

PrayingandHoping · 13/04/2019 06:07

@Nowthenforever2019 if you have ivf you legally have to have one at 7/8 weeks.

Actually I did find it very reassuring

At this early stage to get a reliable picture it needs to be done internally and you need an empty bladder btw. But they will tell u to empty it when you get there

WhiteVixen · 13/04/2019 06:07

Baby is the small blob in the small dark space at the centre of the picture. Big dark space above was my massively full bladder 😂

flumpybear · 13/04/2019 06:10

Congratulations ! You'll see a sac, a small embryo and a flickering heartbeat - enjoy!

Nowthenforever2019 · 13/04/2019 06:10

But the op said she hasn't had ivf....

WhiteVixen · 13/04/2019 06:13

@Nowthenforever2019 I found it massively reassuring. This is my second child but third pregnancy. First pregnancy was textbook. Second pregnancy seemed perfectly fine. Didn’t even occur to me to have an early scan. We hadn’t the first time. Then when we went for the 12 week scan they found I’d had a blighted ovum which is where the egg is fertilised, implants in the uterus but then basically stops. So they found a small pregnancy sac with nothing in it. This time I just needed to know there was something there. If you see a heartbeat at 7/8 weeks the chance of miscarriage drops enormously. Yes it can still happen. But I just needed to know there was something growing.

Babycakes1989 · 13/04/2019 07:13

Everyone has a completely different opinion when it comes to early scans and that’s just the way it is. It’s a personal decision. Peoples circumstances are different so just remember that. Personally this time, mine was fab. I had a mmc last year that was only picked up at my 12 week scan , I went 4/5 weeks without knowing I was no longer pregnant and it was devastating. Fell pregnant again 5 months later and found out I was expecting around 5/6 weeks. The anxiety was overwhelming & ate me up every day wondering if things were progressing as they should. I had spotting & generally felt very well - no morning sickness. For my own sanity because I booked an 8 week early scan with an open mind, fully aware that even though things may be well now - things can change. I just needed to know! I needed the reassurance if things were ok and if not I we would come to terms with it. With my heart in my mouth & all the old memories from the previous year flooding back I hopped on the bed, the lady scanning me was an absolute angel she didn’t turn the screen on until she found the heartbeat , she then switched the screen on and showed me my wiggly baby who was giving us a wave 👋 it was so lovely & I broke down in tears followed by hubby in the car! I had dreamt of that moment! So in my experience that’s why we chose to have one. I’m now 17 weeks & have my 20 week scan in a few weeks. The 8 week scan was clear & she diagnosed I may get more spotting as I had a small area of haemorrhage but that it was common & May just absorb. Good luck ❤️ Keep open minded and have confidence in yourself because it’s your choice! Xxxx here’s a picture of our scan from 8 weeks x

7 week scan - really nervous
SurreyisSunny · 13/04/2019 07:34

Ive had several of these early scans. Be prepared for an internal scan.

This pregnancy first scan I heard a strong heartbeat which was very reassuring. Apart from that just looked like a blob. Second scan (nhs) 2 days later after bleeding, again strong heartbeat. They will also check measurements so you know everything is on track. You will also be dated. Definitely a reassuring experience.

To be entirely open about what can happen last year i had a less positive experience as the embryo measured small with only a faint feral pole. All the midwives were amazing. After 2 further scans had an erpc.

Cookit · 13/04/2019 07:49

Good luck, I’ve had on all of my pregnancies that progressed that far. On one it was MMC and I am SO glad I knew rather than wait another month thinking I was pregnant. On the other two I saw lovely heartbeats. Yes the risk isn’t gone at 7/8/9/10 weeks but it is MUCH reduced and I found hugely reassuring.

MarnieN1 · 13/04/2019 08:34

Thank you everyone! You've all eased my worries quite a bit. My scan is at 11.30 (UK time) so keeping my fingers crossed and will let you know how I get on x

MrsS7 · 13/04/2019 12:43

@MarnieN1 hope you got on ok, I know exactly how you feel.

This is my first pregnancy too, I’m 6 weeks with not many symptoms, and also terrified of having a MMC. I’ve booked a viability scan for just under two weeks’ time and finding all of the waiting very worrying despite trying to stay positive!

Atkinsahye · 13/04/2019 12:58

Just wanted to pop on and say good luck, keep us updated on how it goes I would love to hear 🙂 I’ve had 2 very early losses so I’ve under review with blood tests to monitor my levels going up. At 16dpo my levels were 603 so everything’s seems to be going well, have been offered to be referred for an early scan but I’m not sure if i need to, please let me know how it goes and if it’s worth having one xx

SpinningSister · 13/04/2019 13:10

Good luck hope to hear good news Brew

MarnieN1 · 13/04/2019 13:45

Hiya everyone

Tiny fluttering heartbeat seen this morning and everything is as it should be! Can't explain how relieved I am. Thank you so much to everyone who has offered kind words and good luck to all those waiting for their scans ❤️ xxxxx
