When does repeated sickness become HG?

Hi, I'm 11 weeks pregnant and the last 2 days I've been throwing up loads - I can't eat much but have managed some bites of toast and I'm struggling to keep down water. My urine is very dark but I'm not being sick everytime I drink, just sometimes.

I'm very fortunate to have never really been ill all my life so I'm not sure what to do. I had yesterday off work and am struggling today as I've been sick so many times and am worrying it will continue when I get there. I had to take a day off for a migraine 2 weeks ago too.

Should I ring my midwife as ask for advice? I know sickness is totally normal in pregnancy so don't want to overreact, but I've been reading about HG and I'm not sure if I'm showing signs of it? I can keep down some water but I'm exhausted.

Very dark urine indicates dehydration. If you can’t keep down enough water to stay hydrated, then you need to be in hospital to be rehydrated on a drip. Your GP can gives you medication to help with the nausea (although IME many won’t) but it sounds a bit late for that for you.

Poor you. Yes, this does sound like hyperemisis. I am a veteran of 2 hyperemisis pregnancies and have been admitted many times. Initially I started with a GP appt, who rang the hospital and got me admitted. Once I became familiar with the signs, I just went to A&E.

This website is very helpful Pregnancy Sickness Support.

Does your employer know you are pregnant? Pregnancy related sick leave must be recorded seperately to ordinary sick leave, and can not be used in disciplinary action against you. If your employer doesn’t know, tell them now (even if you ask for discretion from the person you tell) so that sick leave can be recorded properly and so they can do a Pregnancy risk assessment in you and your work. Hyperemisis sick leave can escalate rapidly. I had one day off in week 6, 2 in week 7, got admitted and then was off for 8 weeks. Pretty similar pattern in both pg.

Try sucking ice cubes/ice lollies too. I found I could sometimes stomach fizzy water better than still.

It’s a miserable time, I hope it passes quickly for you.

Thank you @BikeRunSki that's really helpful! I'm just going to keep sipping water as much as possible and hopefully I'll get more in than out!
