Very painful piles in third trimester

I'm 31 weeks and lying here in absolute agony not able to sleep due to external piles.

I've taken paracetamol, which does nothing. Taken Anusol (sp?!) cream and suppositories. I've even put an ice pack up there, which gave about 5 minutes relief.

Any suggestions as to what to do before seeing the gp? Who I know will fob me off, but that's another story.

I can barely walk and I can't get comfortable lying down either. Feel like crying!!!

I’m currently in the same boat but post partum! Had baby just over 4 weeks ago & I’m sure the pressure in the bum I had through pregnancy was due to piles - just didn’t realise at the time 🤦🏾‍♀️

Let me know if you find something that works for you.

I’ve tried anusol - got it again yesterday to retry internally the cream.

Witch Hazel pads I’ve been using still no joy.

Ointment that docs have prescribed externally but still nothing.

Drinking lots of water and eating veg fruits etc.

I just don’t know anymore 😱

Help!

Eslteacher06 · 08/04/2019 07:41

Have you tried anti-inflammatory drugs? I'd take them if I wasn't pregnant. Was gonna try witch hazel pads but if you say they don't work, then I won't hold out hope. Arrrrrgh!

I’ve been taking Arnica but thinking to stop that for a bit and just use ibuprofen or something 🤦🏾‍♀️ Reckon it’s worth a try?

I only brought the witch hazel pads about a week ago and have been using them a few times a day - it’s worth trying as they may still work for you but i’m not feeling a difference yet.

It’s frustrating as I can’t sit for long and I’m mix feeding bubba so it’s effecting BF 🤦🏾‍♀️

Have you come across any other things to try?

Baths are meant to help but I don’t have much time to sit in a bath 3-4 times a day 😂

I've suffered with piles/constipation ever since having my dd 2 years ago. Mostly went away but came back in this pregnancy. The only things you can do to help it is make sure you're eating a healthy diet and drink LOTS of water. And the biggest thing I recommend is MOVICOL. This will loosen your stools but not cause diarrhea. It's been my absolute life saver and you're able to take it in pregnancy. You can get it in most chemists or online. Plus take nice warm baths or sit on a back warmer/heat pad to ease pain in the mean time. Good luck!

Hi there
I’m on my third pregnancy, my piles are terrible now at 38 weeks. I’ve had an operation in the past on my piles (after 1st baby) which in hindsight was daft as they just came back with further pregnancies.
I am taking lactulose morning and night and I went to the Gp the other day who didn’t fob me off, (not sure why they would?) but gave me some steroid/ anti inflammatory cream. Other stuff I’ve tried in the past that has worked includes making a conscious effort to drink a lot of water, and putting KY jelly around bottom before doing a poo. Piles are awful. I’m dreading the birth. Good luck OP.

Ok, so I am 20 weeks pregnant and yesterday was greeted by an enormous pile. Not by constipation but a actually looser. I tried all I could think of and asked in our August thread.

Someone said to put Vicks vapour rub on it if it's external. Oh my god. I managed to sleep. It didn't hurt putting it on and it gave me a good few hours of relief.

Maybe give that a shot? Just don't get any near your nunney. Good luck to you OP.

troppibambini · 08/04/2019 08:02

You need some licocaine cream. It completely numbs them it is amazing stuff you can get it on prescription or you can buy vagisil (for itchy fanjos) over the counter it's basically just lidocaine.
When I saw my doctor late on in pregnancy he told me realistically I wasn't going to be able to get rid of them until the baby was born but lidocaine would stop them hurting. It really really worked.

chipperchop · 08/04/2019 08:05

Yes, I’m with you OP! I’ve got lax tulles to try to keep everything soft and moving, and Boots own version on Anusol. Religious use seems to have eased the pain, at least.

Hope you find some relief Flowers

chipperchop · 08/04/2019 08:06

Really should proof-read (autocorrect hates me)!

lax tulles = lactulose

I saw the doctor when I had piles in my last pregnancy. Was told that the different creams work in different ways. Some try to shrink piles and therefore have stronger medication in, while others are more soothing. I had been using the medicated ones which were actually making things far more sore, so a switch to a gentler soothing cream worked wonders. I think preparation H is one of the gentler ones.

In terms of management, it was a case of prune juice (mixed into orange juice to hide the taste), fluids and high fibre. Nowadays I still have to be careful, but find a portion of dried apricots can really make life easier!

Hope you're feeling better soon. I remember this was just utterly miserable.

Eslteacher06 · 08/04/2019 09:39

I've had piles for a long time and last pregnancy so was trying to avoid them anyway. It's the constant pain that's killing me so just a way to stop that would be blessed relief.

I might try vicks or vagisil 😬 but I've just seen a pharmacist and they suggested germoloids and that has lidocaine. Let's see!! Thanks for the suggestions :)

Getting a doctor appointment is like waiting for the holy grail. Plus my GP never seems to be willing to prescribe anything and I after the incident the other week where I fell hard in front of traffic on my stomach, and the doctor was very dismissive of my obvious distress, I don't really trust him at the moment. (He seems to be the only one available...I wonder why!)

You totally have my sympathy, I had them after having DS and I'm a week overdue now with DC2. They came back around Christmas and were awful.

I just used the Anusol suppositories and cream really regularly, plus Germaloid cream. It was literally the first thing I did when I woke up and I plastered them with the cream. They calmed down after a while of doing that and aren't causing me a problem at the moment. I can feel they are there but they aren't painful or itchy. Expecting them to be back in full force once I've delivered though Confused

When I had DS I was obviously using maternity towels for the bleeding but I found doubling up 2 of the biggest towels I could buy and putting the overlap near my bottom gave a bit of padding and protected them a bit, so maybe try that. I'm planning to do that again this time and just hoping it works again.

I really sympathise, when mine came back at Christmas there was nothing I could do that wasn't painful, not even lying on my side on the sofa. It's not even like you want to explain to the world why you're feeling rubbish either is it! Thanks

Eslteacher06 · 08/04/2019 09:50

@snowflake9... I hope you get sorted soon! Nothing worse than being in agony while bf!!

@FinallyGotAnIPhone - if you don't mind me asking, what was the operation like pain wise and recovery wise? What do they do? Cut them off or do they poke them back in? (Sorry to be so crude, I'm thinking I might need to have something done). I had terrible piles when I was pregnant due to anti sickness medication and it's never really gone back to normal Blush I haven't seen a GP about it yet, I'm so embarrassed 😩

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 08/04/2019 14:02

@spaniorita I had an operation called a “HALO” operation I had it done privately. I can’t remember the specifics but if you google it I’m sure it will tell you. It was marketed to me by the doctor as being a day job, limited pain etc etc as opposed to a haemaroidectomy which apparently might have me recovering for six weeks ... what I don’t recall the doctor quizzing me on is whether or not I intended to have more children. Because I think until you’ve had all your children there’s no point in the op as they’d just come back.

The op itself was in a private BMI hospital, it was under GA and it was indeed a day job- ie I went in, had the op (couple of hours?) woke up, had some toast then came home. I was given tramadol (strong painkiller) which made me very sick. I spent the week in bed it took me much longer to recover than I anticipated. Completely regret the op it was a waste of time and a waste of someone’s money! However - that could just have been my experience .....

Eslteacher06 · 08/04/2019 14:23

I could literally shove a hot poker up there I'm that sore! 😬😬😬😂

Eslteacher06 · 10/04/2019 16:11

@snoopy18 I've been prescribed Scheriproct ointment (stronger than the suppositories). I remember using that last time I gave birth and it did help. It's ok for breastfeeding/pregnancy.

When doctor was examining me, he said 'omg' and had a look of horror on his face. If the doctor reacts like that then I know they must be bad!!! Still in pain 3 days later but hoping the meds work soon. Urgh.

OP posts:
FinallyGotAnIPhone · 10/04/2019 17:36

I’ve got the same ointment on prescription.

Mondayblues7 · 10/04/2019 22:24

Nurse wouldn't give me sheriproct , I asked for that as had it before. She gave me another one ending in proct and it has reduced massively.

Good luck OP. X
