How do I tell my boss I am pregnant when I never see him?

Hiya I am currently 11 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I started a new job in June last year. I am really not looking forward to telling my boss I am pregnant, he always jokes when I do see him that he Hope's none of the staff are going to get pregnant. The trouble is I also work across different sites and rarely see my boss, iv just checked my rota and know I will not see him until at least the 2nd week in may by which point il be about 16 weeks and more than likely showing. How do I tell him? I was going to send a text as most of the communication with him is via text but not sure if this is the right thing to do. To make things even more tricky things are happening in the company and I do not want to tell him until I'm at least 14 weeks so I can still qualify for mat leave if the worst does happen and i get made redundant(work have to give me 3 months notice). Sorry for rambling. Thankyou

If you think redundancies are likely I'd be delaying it as long as possible - wear baggier tops! You don't have to tell them for a good while yet

Yeah that's a fair point. Already putting weight on though so hope I can hide it for another month or so.

Actually if redundancy is possible I would say sooner. As under employment law if you are pregnant you have more protections to keep you than if you are not. Otherwise it could be classed as discrimination against the fact you are pregnant.

I'd call him rather than tell him via text. You don't need to legally tell him until 15 weeks before due date, so you don't have to rush. Even if you wait until May, it's up to you.

Also, congratulations!

When I told my boss I still had to put it in an email to her and HR. I agree with pp tell them sooner rather than later especially if redundancies are likely to be announced.

Thank you redundancy is unlikely but possible so that's why I'm cautious. Whilst I am new to the job I am one of the most experienced so hopefully they wouldn't get rid if me. I may just see how im looking in a few weeks and hope he Pops over to where I am working one of the days or that he is scheduled in with me 2nd week in may. Also just going through the process of selling mine and mine partners house and buying one together talk about everything happening at once! If I do get made redundant it's not the end of the world as there are a lot of jobs in my field and I'd look while I was on mat leave I just want to make sure I get mat leave. Thanks every one :)

Agree with this.

I would drop him a text asking him to call you when he has a spare moment. This gives him the opportunity to call you at a suitable time, instead of you catching him off-guard. Also, prepares him slightly as he’ll get the jist that you’ve got some news for him.

Don’t be in the slightest bit worried. He actually can’t say anything remotely negative, if he does he is leaving himself massively at risk!

Ah if you are more experienced that does change things. I was thinking that a less than credible business might use the "let in first out" excuse but you'd have experience on your side to argue against it.
