Sonographer said baby’s bowels were on the outside

Sorry I posted this yesterday but I’ve still been stressing.
I had a private reassurance scan yesterday which dated me at 10+2. We seen our little baby wriggling about and all was fine. We went to the waiting area to wait for our pictures and the sonographer came out to say she was emailing the scan pictures to a consultant as our baby’s bowels were still outside in the cord. She said it’s normal for them to be outside but at this stage she would have expected them to be going back in. Our dating scan is a few weeks away she was checking with the consultant to see if he would prefer it to be moved forward but he just said to wait and give a report to give to the sonographer there so that they’re aware and can look into it.

Has anyone ever experienced similar? She said I may just need extra monitoring until they go back in, assuming they will.

I probably sound strange, but at my scan with my first child his were fine. I can’t help thinking if the bowels are in the cord how is the baby being fed, surely they would be blocking it? I didn’t think to ask these questions at the time but I’ve text my midwife who will hopefully respond tomorrow. I can’t help but worry although the sonographer didn’t seem concerned she just said a consultant at the hospital would discuss it with me if they didn’t go back in.

Any words of reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t know. My thoughts are with you.

I have attached a picture where she saw the bowels hadn’t quite gone in yet. Everything else seems fine, baby growing well.

This said they go inside week 11 and staying out is rare so try not to panic- easier said than done I know Flowers

Thank you I hope they do - the way the sonographer worded it was that she wouldn’t still expect them still outside due to how far along I am but judging by what I’ve read online it’s not that uncommon. I have my next scan in 3 weeks so hopefully it’s rectified by then. So much for a “reassurance” scan, I’ve came away more anxious!

I’d contact your midwife now.

Longislandicedme · 07/04/2019 18:43

@PotteringAlong I text her yesterday but haven’t heard back I imagine I will tomorrow, if not I’ll give her a call. I don’t know whether to ring EPAU for advice as they’re 24/7 but not sure if I’m being dramatic but it might ease my mind.

This has proven to me why I would never get a 'reassurance' scan.

I hope your next appointment is truly reassuring, OP.

Longislandicedme · 07/04/2019 18:50

@lljkk I wouldn’t get one again I’d rather wait til 12 weeks. I had a bleed at 6 weeks and was scanned at the hospital then and since then I’ve felt quite anxious but it was better feeling anxious without a real reason to.

I had a scan yesterday...i am 10+2 and she noted phsiological heriation...But said its ABSOLOUTELY normal...They should go in by my 12 week scan.I was so freaked out...I said does this happen to everyone...she said yes...I would not lie to you of it wasnt meant to be that way.Its what i expect to see...Im worried now your sonographer has said its not normal.?.I also googled and they said its normal??...Im pretty sure its nothing to worry about. But i understand how you feel. Its totally playing on my mind.X

Longislandicedme · 07/04/2019 19:15

@My3boys9910 it probably is normal judging by what I’ve read, does your scan look anything like mine where the cord looks huge like something is in it? To be honest I’m wondering whether she was just being extra cautious with us perhaps. Either way it had us stressing out. She noted “physiological bowel herniation within the cord” so probably is just normal then.
Sorry if this worried you I think it’s how the sonographer dealt with it that had us so anxious!

DH was born with his bowels on the outside, and other than a scar on his tummy he's absolutely fine. It was just one surgery, and I think MIL said they had to be careful with feeding/weaning etc, but he's not had any problems, and is certainly fine as an adult. So it's not necessarily a major issue if they don't go back in before the baby is born. Not ideal, obviously, but he's an example of someone who survived it.

Comefromaway · 07/04/2019 19:24

My cousin was born with her intestines on the outside 30 odd years ago. My aunt had to give birth at a specialist hospital and she had an operation at birth plus a couple of follow ups as a child but is perfectly fine and healthy.

LilQueenie · 07/04/2019 19:30

my niece was born with her intestines on the outside too. Perfectly fine now too.

My3boys9910 · 07/04/2019 19:31

Yeah its hard not to cling on to things they say...Ive not stopped thinking about it since & examining the scan...Il upload a pic...X

Exactly the same experience here. Reassurance scan at 10 weeks with the same thing observed and notes forwarded on to hospital. All normal at the 12 week scan.

EmperorBallpitine · 07/04/2019 19:38

My friends little boy had some bowel still outside at birth, but they were ready for it and he was treated. Now a very healthy big kid!

Longislandicedme · 07/04/2019 20:29

Ah thank you everyone I feel so much more relieved now! I don’t think the sonographer explained it very well so it wasn’t as reassuring as I’d have hoped. Fingers crossed no issues in the next scan!

Just wanted to say that my sisters little boy was born with bowels on the outside, she had a scheduled c-section and they took him off for surgery to pop them back in and you would never know anything had been wrong. He is a fine growing lad with a teeny scar on his tummy but that's all :) I don't think it's too big a problem, iykwim? Hope the next scan goes well!

Cyclewidow46 · 09/04/2019 22:18

Hi there, did the sonographer tell you the crown rump length (CRL) of the baby?
Bowel herniation for a CRL of less than 45mm is completely normal.
