Im 10 weeks pregnant and have lost about 4kg, going down by about 1kg per week for last 4 weeks. My BMI is 19 so within normal range but on the lower side. I havnt vomitted at all although have had diarrhoea and have reduced appetite. Do you think this is okay?
Im wondering if i need to stop exercising, i love cycling and running and would prefer to keep this up but not sure if i should because of weight loss. Any thoughts?

Please speak to your midwife / GP as you’re on the lower range of BMI. I had to stop exercising early on and continued to loose weight (2 stone) until I was 28 weeks pregnant. I was heavier range so it wasn’t so bad for me.

I think given you are at the lower end of your bmi you probably either need to consume more calories or do less exercise. I suspect the former would be better and you probably only need one calorie dense snack per day to make the difference between maintaining and losing.

Can you try swapping/adding to current things you’re eating for more calorie dense versions? Full fat milk, plenty of hummus and nuts as snacks, add cheese to salads, peanut butter on sliced apple etc.

Thank you both for your replies. I think ill try your suggestion @makelemonade and try to increase my calorie intake. Its hard because i feel like i should try and be extra healthy with what i eat, so full fat options feel wrong!
@Elizabeth did your weight loss turn to weight gain automatically or did ypu change sometging at 28 weeks?

I finally stopped being sick at 22 weeks and could consume enough calories for us both, still had no appetite but felt it was a job that must be done for baby’s benefit. It was very hard to eat enough at the start due to sickness and I was reassured that as I was overweight (BMI 24 - I think) that baby and I could convert my fat. Midwives were happy with baby’s growth but we did have additional scans and checks as my bump was small.

Regarding eating healthy, I could only stomach vegetables, fruit and ice cream but I tried to snack on high fat avocado, full cream ice creams etc I also took additional vitamins to ensure baby got enough when I couldn’t keep any food down.

I really would ease off the exercise though, atleast until you’ve had a check up. I did get back into swimming and walking in later pregnancy, and post natal fitness has just started!

Gosh, being sick until 22 weeks must have been so hard :( poor you!
I think youre right, ill take it easy with the running for the next couple of weeks, hopefully my appetite will then start to pick up again after that. :)

I lost about 1 stone in my first trimester due to awful morning sickness. I would suggest speak to midwife & maybe have a smoothie everyday so at least your getting more healthy nutrition for baby. Sometimes it happens though a lot of people lose a lot of weight. Good luck x
