Six months pregnant and I fell off my bike today

Hi, I'm quite new on here, but I need some reassurance. I came off my bike today while I was riding round the park -(trying to stay fit but not running). I was trying to avoid some walkers and came off the path and onto some grass, but hit a hidden kerb and smash, I just hit the ground really hard. I didn't land on my bump thank god, I seem to have really thumped my knee and I've got bruising on my other leg. I went straight round to my doctor's and they checked the baby's heartbeat and that was fine. He said only to worry if I have some bleeding, which I haven't had. But I feel so damn stupid. This baby is so wanted, I can't believe I did this.

Do you think if I haven't had any bleeding so far I am in the clear. Baby is moving round as per normal as far as I can tell. Any thoughts/similar experience welcome.

Ta, Poppy

I am sure all is well, with the baby if not your knee!
they're very well protected in there, so, as your doctor says, unless you get any bleeding there's probably absolutely nothing to worry about. especially as you can feel baby moving

derah · 12/07/2007 21:28

Hi Poppy. If you didn't land on your bump and the doc has given you the all-clear, I'm sure you'll be fine. Babies come with a built-in airbag (OK, fluid bag)!

tribpot · 12/07/2007 21:28

It sounds like you're okay, although it must have been a horribly frightening experience. The baby is very well protected against shocks inside its sac, sounds like you've taken the worse knock. Hope the night is okay, try not to worry too much.

hayley2u · 13/07/2007 09:33

thats horible to hear. i hasd the same situation when i was 4 months thought id go for bike ride a car span round and it me sending me flying over the road. i was hysteical. the carnever stopped either. luckily baby was fine but put off bikes for life ha x

Tutter · 13/07/2007 09:35

sure you'll be fine if doc has checked h/b

walking/swimming the best when you're pg, imo

LackingNicknameInspiration · 13/07/2007 09:36

Poor you Poppy - hope you're feeling ok apart from the worry.

I slipped and fell over when I was around 23 weeks (wet day and very impractical shoes )- didn't hit bump but whacked knee and was a bit achy the following day around stomach which concerned me (think it was more the shock of using stomach muscles to attempt to regain balance - first time for a while!!!). Anyway, I got checked out, similar to you, and once they'd heard the heartbeat they were happy. I think if it's moving around too you'll be fine.

nailpolish · 13/07/2007 09:37

hi poppy, i hope you are starting to feel better.

when i was about 6mths pg i slipped on a lino floor and landed on my side at work. it was horrible. luckily i worked at a hospital so i went to see a mw and she did the same - checked the heartbeat and said as long as no bleedin g and baby is moving everything will be fine. and it was

MrsWeasley · 13/07/2007 09:38

When I was 7/8 months pregnant i got on a bus he pulled out before I was seated then braked hard and I was sent flying down the bus. My ankle was badly hurt (not broken) but I cold walk for days and it is still bad somedays now!

my baby was fine, thankfully.
You now need to rest and relax you have a big shock!

MadEyemarthamooDy · 13/07/2007 09:41

I fell with both my pregnancies - the first, on my way to work, I was about 6 months pregnant and I slipped on ice and fell really badly (though not on the bump, thankfully). And with my second I managed to fall down the stairs - I was about 7 months pregnant.

Both times I was black and blue - but the pregnancies in question are now 10 and 5 years old respectively. They are well protected in there - and so long as your baby is moving about (and your GP has checked the heratbeat which is doubly reassuring) then I really wouldn't worry.

Someone told me (when I fell down the stairs) that your centre of gravity is 'out' when you are pregnant and falls are very common. I'm sure you and your baby will be fine (though I bet you're bruised all over today) - but if you still feel worried, go to your GP or your maternity unit.

FoghornLeghorn · 13/07/2007 09:48

Poppy, sure things will be fine, t'was a good idea to get checked over by doc.
My BF fell down the stairs about 6 weeks ago, she would've been about 6 months pregnant at the time, she went straight over from the top to the bottom and landed in a heap - she was pretty shaken but baby was/is absolutely fine

MrsScavo · 13/07/2007 09:50

Poor you!

I fell when heavily pregnant with DS2; forward at the bottom of the stairs, straight on to bump. Horrible, but baby was fine.

I'm sure your body took the majority of the shock. Personally, I don't think riding a bike whilst pregnant is unreasonable.

nailpolish · 13/07/2007 09:51

mrsweasley i hop[e the driver apologised

chopster · 13/07/2007 10:03

Babies are surprisingly cushioned in the womb and you've been checked out so I'm sure you will be fine. It is scary though, I know. My legs suddenly went and I managed to fall over into a heap into the middle of a road when 38 weeks pg with my twins, and they were fine.

Cycling can get harder as you get bigger because of balancing. Maybe you could try swimming instead?

PoppyField · 13/07/2007 13:22

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for your responses. All those tales of your pain and scrapes made me feel a lot better! I haven't had any bleeding, touch wood, and I slept ok, but yes I am hardly mobile and have big bruises. The bike is going in the shed for a while now - that's when it's come back from the bike shop I dumped it in on the way to the doc's. Am now putting feet up but I think I'll be in the swimming pool as much as possible from now on. Shame - I was really enjoying the cycling and the bump wasn't getting in the way, but I obviously can't afford the lapse in concentration and maybe the bump did affect my balance. Who knows. I just hope my knee recovers soon. Just limped to the chemist for arnica and tubigrip...what's on telly?!
love
Poppy

Putting your feet up and watching TV sounds like just what the doctor ordered

Gursky · 13/07/2007 17:20

Glad bump is moving around - and please stop saying it was your fault - it was an accident. Look after yourself!

MrsWeasley · 15/07/2007 19:33

nailpolish: No he didnt say a word he knew what had happened as everyone on the bus screamed and rushed to my aid
