Fake tan - definite yes.
Immac - dunno
Wax - can't see why not
Highlights with foil - should be ok as no chemicals touching your skin.
Hairy stomach - um - it's the good old hormones.

nickytwotimesAKAmrspontypine · 12/07/2007 21:13

yes
yes
yes
yes if you can be bothered!!!
hormones - totally normal!

bluebell82 · 12/07/2007 21:14

also bruising?
And finally.. itchy legs??

OP posts:
LittleLupin · 12/07/2007 21:14

No proven evidence against, but I wouldn't and neither would the NHS
I think so
Yes, but may be more painful
Yes, the chemicals don't touch the scalp
Cos you are a pregnant person

daisyandbabybootoo · 12/07/2007 21:15

in answer to your questions bluebell
1...don't know
2....don't know
3...yes, but you might find it hurts more
4....don't know, but I had mine done loads
5....hormones...i got hairy nipples (which was nice...not)

daisyandbabybootoo · 12/07/2007 21:19

bruising may be due to low iron levels, iirc

not sure about itchy legs.

bluebell82 · 12/07/2007 21:22

I am a little uncertain about taking iron tablets, I am 12 weeks and I 'm not seeing my mw until 8th aug.. I've got my 12 week scan on mon so I might ask them then.. I've heard they bung you up? Also if you taken sanatogen pregnany vitamins is that enough iron?

Definitely no to Immac and other chemical hair removal products. The chemicals can appearently be absorbed into your skin and passed on to LO.

bluebell82 · 13/07/2007 08:17

Oh noooo! I used immac last night! Just on my lip region... that is a super long way from the bump.. also tried a test patch on my skin for fake tan and it was fine so will put a bit on tonight! The NHS direct website said it is just because you skin is more sensitive, but I tested it on my legs where they were itchy and it has clamed them right down, eventhough I have been layering Sudacream on every night to no effect.. strange!

Try not to panic, Bluebelle. I'm sure you and your LO will be fine. It's not like you used it on a large area and the hair in your face is usually quite fine so you wouldn't have had it on for long either. Chances are very slim that anything adverse is going to happen, otherwise it would say something about it in the instructions or packet. I think problems may arise if you use a lot of it repeatedly.

There is so much that us pregnant women are or are not supposed to do that we'd go mad if we managed to stick to all of it all of the time. THe worst is that the advise seems to vary from midwife/GP to midwife/GP and country to country. I have a lot of friends in Scandinavia and some in the US and we've been comparing notes. In the US you are told in addition to shark, marlin and swordfis to avoid farmed salmon at all cost , whereas in Scandinavia they make no mention of swordfish, marlin or shark but warn about halibut instead. And a German lady I know was told to avoid coffee, tea and chocolate in all forms because of caffeine. Here and in the US, you are told that you must not to use a duvet in your baby's cot, while in Scandinavia, it's not an issue.

I've panicked after forgetting about not eating Feta cheese and ready made coleslaw and worried after using nail varnish remover and cleaning products with bleach. The thing is, you do the best that you can and that's all you can do. If pregnancy really is a balancing act on a knife's edge then I think the human race would have died out by now considering what generations of women have done in the past: drank stout, alcohol and unpasteurised milk, eaten dodgy food prepared using questionable hygiene practices, or going back further, worn make-up with lead in it, etc. FAct is, although many more babies died or were miscarried in those days than today, quite a most survived and some even grew up to become geniuses, too!

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 11:08

I think one of the biggest problems is that you are more sensitive due to the hormones and therefore could get more allergic reactions than normal to chemical beauty products.

Gingercurl ? I love Feta and discovered that Tesco?s own is pasteurised ? yay!

Scampynoodle · 13/07/2007 12:38

Can I just butt in to say that I agree with what Gingercurl says and I reckon that if we all listened to all the scare stories out there we'd go doo-bleedin-lally.

I don't know about you laydees but I don't intend on going through any pregnancy with a jungle-like bikini line and leg hair that monekys could swing from. The same rigorous vanity goes for my toenails which will be daubed in all manner of colours until the bitter, midwife-abusing end, even if I have to get the milkman to do said painting for me. God knows, it's only attempting to look good on the outside that helps me forget how insanely rotten I feel on the inside.

I'll stop there before I start ranting.

bluebell82 · 13/07/2007 12:41

here here- Just rang Nair which is the brand I use and they said that it is only because my skin is more sensitve.. I do unfortunately suffer from lots of hair, god I sound gross.. to the point that my dh refers to me as 'Gillette'.. if I can't use beauty products then I am not leaving the house from right now! Also I remember watching an episode of the Jordan diaries and she used the sun bed when she was preggers!

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 12:56

Scampynoddle - are you telling me they'll give me gip about my nailvarnish?! it's the one product I don't leave home without!

Bluebell - the hair does seem to grow faster everywhere doesn't it? DH called my slightly overgrown Brazilian a Brazlian Warthog the other day when I tried to claim it was a hedgehog!

Jbck · 13/07/2007 14:39

I did my bikini line with Nair sensitive during my last pg & the midwife even commented on how neat it was when I was going for emergency section.
I'm managing myself just now but might need to call DH in nearer due date, the things that man does for me

Spillage21 · 13/07/2007 14:46

There was a great article in The Guardian t'other week by Zoe Williams looking at the actual evidence around the various dos/don't in pregnancy.

Scampynoodle · 13/07/2007 14:56

Jbck, I just love the idea of the midwife commenting on my neatly tailored nethers when I finally hit the delivery suite! Blimey, if that isn't incentive to keep things in trim I don't know what is. Good work!

your stomach goes hairly because of your hormones, so ur need to get that waxed too!! lol

MrsMcJnr · 14/07/2007 22:41

I've found a package at a new boutique which also does treatments for pregnant ladies called Ready for Birth and it's 4hr45 of pampering including a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, eye lash tint, 1/2 leg, armpit and bikini wax - now that's what I call ready for labour!
