When to be worried about breathlessness

I genuinely feel like I just can't breathe, especially when I'm in bed at night.

I can't seem to catch my breath at all, I'm sat upright in bed at the moment and I'm near enough panting.

Should I be worried about this or is it a normal pregnancy symptom?

That sounds horrible mcjx. How far along are you?

TBH, I'm 39&6 and I haven't had it that bad yet. We're all different but that does sound a bit extreme so I'd be inclined to talk to your doctor. It's too easy to put everything down to pregnancy, but being pregnant doesn't stop other health problems from arising. That said, it could be nothing. So don't panic, but do get it checked. Good luck.

Have you had your iron levels tested?

mcjx · 06/04/2019 08:31

@ChaosMoon I'm 35 weeks. It's really horrible, I haven't slept all night so trying to catch some sleep now but my breathing is very laboured.

I have had breathlessness before in this pregnancy but nothing so extreme, I'm only lay in bed! Not doing anything strenuous

@Runkle yes, I am anemic so take iron but I don't feel it has worked to be honest.

Saw midwife on Wednesday, she retook some blood and said she will contact me with the results today

Try sleeping on your side rather than your back.
If it's happening all the time like even when just sitting watching tv it could be still iron levels too low.
It happened to me recently and had to go to a&e. My iron levels were too low. Because of this my body didn't have enough red blood cells so my heart was racing to make up for it, causing the breathlessness. I stupidly thought it was normal and was struggling for 4 or 5 weeks before I mentioned it to midwife.
When your bloods come back today you'll know if this is the case anyway. Good luck

Midwife just text me to say my iron level is still too low. I've also told her about the extreme breathlessness so will see what she comes back with.

Thanks all x

Glad you have an answer @mcjx, and that is nothing more serious. I hope they can get you some better supplements soon.

Cantthinkofausername1990 · 06/04/2019 09:00

You prob missed my message above, we posted around the same time. For me it was the low iron causing the extreme breathlessness. After increasing the iron dosage it took about a week for things to get back to normal.
Hope you are feeling better soon x

Poor you, I feel like that too but I'm only in week 3, is that possible?! This is the only symptom I have, feel like I cannot get enough air 😰 my first early scan is booked in for next Thursday so I'll try to hold off until then for blood test!

Lavellan · 08/04/2019 08:58

SunStruck I had some of this very early in and apparently its caused by the extra progesterone at that stage. It's not for good though, mine lasted a couple of weeks.
