Heartburn

Oh the heartburn!!

What can I do to stop it once it starts?

And what can I avoid eating to setting it off? I’ve been googling but the list of things to avoid seemed endless - not sure what there would be left for me to eat.

Saying that... I’m not in the slightest bit hungry because of the burning ball of fire in my chest

Gaviscon is your friend here. I had the most horrendous heartburn when pg with ds1. I was at work and literally spitting into my bin every 20 secs or so. My boss packed me off out to Tesco with a Gaviscon recommendation and I sat in the carpark, took a swig from the bottle, and the heartburn just vanished like magic.
It's safe for pregnancy whereas other remedies are not.
Peppermint is nicer than the standard aniseed.

Gaviscon works well, and so do Rennies tablets - the orange ones taste like sweets! I’ve found everything that I eat will set it off, so can’t help with food advice, sorry!

Thismummyruns · 05/04/2019 21:36

Currently sat here with a slushie to try and ward off the burn...

SuddenlyISee · 05/04/2019 21:41

I had the large bottle of gaviscon advanced on repeat prescription that I used to carry around in my bag and swig out of like a wino!

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/04/2019 21:47

Gaviscon didn’t touch mine and it got so bag it burnt when I drank water and I couldn’t eat for a day. Nothing made it worse, there’s no rhyme or reason, but I got ranatidine on prescription which was a life saver.

Sorry you’re suffering Flowers I had my baby a couple of weeks ago and every day I go to bed thinking how amazing it is that I haven’t felt my throat burning.

GetHappy · 05/04/2019 22:26

Feel your pain. Mines so bad I have gaviscon and ranitidine and still not pain free Sad

mcjx · 05/04/2019 22:28

I can relate. I've tried everything - gaviscon, Rennies, Ranitidine etc..

Going to the GP next week to see if I can be prescribed something else!

Heyha · 05/04/2019 22:30

Gaviscon doesn't touch mine some days but I still can't get a prescription out of my doctor (not eating or sleeping properly apparently isn't enough of a reason to go beyond gaviscon).

However I have noticed if I don't keep hydrated and/or I get constipated this makes it much worse so I am trying to keep on top of those two issues which in turn seems to make the indigestion stay at a level that gaviscon can deal with. Weirdly I've had it really bad today but tied in with not eating enough!

LazyLizzy · 05/04/2019 22:49

Had it for the whole pregnancy, even in labour nurse gave me a gigantic antacid tablet. It didn't work.

She swore blind it would go once the baby was born, and she was right! It was heaven.

LouB1990 · 05/04/2019 22:58

Gaviscon helps me to no end. Seriously go & get some! It’s a life saver. I have been sick from heartburn since taking that I’ve been ok xx

loveshinealight · 06/04/2019 07:22

I've got a prescription for Omeprazole. It's a lifesaver. One tablet a day and I'm cured. It's completely safe during pregnancy. Go see your GP and ask for it.

TerribleTwosPhase · 06/04/2019 07:26

Gaviscon didn't work for me either. I was swigging it from the bottle but made no difference. GP gsve me a prescription for Omeperazol & I felt like a different person overnight! Hope you find something that works for you soon

Februaryblooms · 06/04/2019 11:50

I'm suffering terribly with this at the moment.

I find that gaviscon or any of the cheaper brand medicines do the trick (Tesco, poundstretcher etc) and all provide some temporary relief.

I avoid fizzy drinks and eating anything too sugary or spicy which inevitably makes it worse.

I find drinking milk helps slightly too, not hugely but it does take the edge off when I get up in the middle of the night with my throat on fire Sad

Tinekittie2 · 06/04/2019 11:57

I got a prescription of ranitidine from my GP which has been a life saver (still taking antiacids too though). Heartburn and reflux are horrendous! Hope you find something that works Flowers
