How much clothing for baby?

GemmeFatale · 05/04/2019 12:10

I’m in the third trimester and starting to sort clothes for the baby.

Already people have been very generous passing on baby grows and vests. I’m now trying to sort these and fill any gaps so...

How much of each size/clothing type do we need for our baby?

Don’t buy too much of small sizes. Both my babies didn’t really fit newborn/fit it for about 3 days! You can always buy more from the supermarket/online if you have a little one.

No idea but it was nowhere near as much newborn and 0-3 as we got gifted and got through hand-me-downs. We hardly bought anything ourselves anyway and we still had tons of clothes that still have tags on that she never wore. She was born in the heatwave in the summer and basically wore nothing but vests for the first 6 weeks anyway because our flat was like a sauna. She's 9 months now and actually goes through way more clothes now than she did when she was tiny because although she has less poo leaks, she does still have some which are particularly bad when she is unwell (which has been most of the last month, since she started nursery), and since weaning at 6 months gets more dirty with food, and at nursery they don't even use bibs so she gets through loads of outfits a day there! Whereas I didn't need to change her clothes much more than once or twice a day as a newborn especially as she wasn't a sicky baby at all. Think about your washing too, I didn't want to be constantly washing, I did one load of her laundry every week, still do. You could obviously have less clothes and wash more but that's not practical for us, she's always been 'high needs' and I've been back at work the last 2 weeks too. And in the early weeks when breastfeeding and when she was really colicky and just screamed all the time if she wasn't latched on to me, I couldn't really do anything in the day time at all lol never mind laundry.

Also just for balance, DD according to the fundal height measurements was meant to be huge, but instead turned out less than 7lb and the newborn clothes were too big, she wore small baby/tiny baby for the first two or 3 weeks that one of our friends had predicted right that we would have a small-ish baby.

12 vests and baby grows of newborn, and12 each of the next size up.

Settlersofcatan · 05/04/2019 13:04

I wouldn't buy too far ahead as you don't know if your baby will be big or small. Also, you'll get loads of gifts!

Depending on how frequently you're happy to di laundry, I would say 6-10 vests and babygros in newborn and 0-3 will do you ok. My DS was 8 lb 7 and in newborn clothes for a few weeks.

Flamingosnbears · 05/04/2019 13:07

It really isn't worth buying too much before baby is with you as you'll have a better idea for size.

Cantthinkofausername1990 · 05/04/2019 13:16

As said above, it's hard to be properly organised until you know the size of the baby. Same case with nappies. Even wipes - Ds was allergic to one of the main brands so I'm not stocking up on them either. You'd be better off to say the money until the baby is born so you actually know what you need

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/04/2019 13:57

I didn't have any newborn size but bought a couple of three packets each of babygros and vests, a pramsuit for my first baby born in midwinter, and a couple of cardigans. My children were average size 2.8-3.4 kg and although the clothes were baggy we managed fine. Save your pennies, you'll get gifts and as long as you have a washing machine and a washing line you will be fine. Fill in gaps when you know what you need.

Tbh though I found it really hard to get out to do shopping and stuff once she was here though so I'm glad we had enough that we hardly had to buy much in the early weeks (but most was gifts and hand me downs). I had a long slow painful recovery from my assisted delivery and couldn't walk much for weeks and as I say my baby cried all the time it wasn't latched on to me lol but then we don't have a car either so I'm sure it would have been easier if we did.

Settlersofcatan · 05/04/2019 14:41

Meadow - we don't have a car either, it was all about one handed online shopping while feeding the baby for me!

MeadowHay · 05/04/2019 14:51

Yep same here, Amazon prime is still used a lottttt here (she's 9 months now) but I would rather shop locally where possible so if I wasn't getting lots of gifts and hand me downs would have preferred to buy it before baby was born. There's so much to do afterwards and always going to be things you didn't realise you needed so I'm glad I didn't also have to buy full sets of outfits too.

babyontheway94 · 05/04/2019 15:01

I purchased WAY to much clothing for DD1 before she was born, proper outfits and the such weren't even used until she was past 3 months.

We went for her being comfortable in babygrows/sleepsuits. Such a little baby looked a bit silly in a frilly dress. She started wearing 'outfits' properly after 6 months but even then it was comfortable tops/leggings and the odd dress for a special occasion or outing.

I'm 38 weeks with DD2 and the majority of clothes I've purchased for newborn and 0-3 Are babygrows and sleepsuits. Probably about 20-30 in each size.

Second hand clothing is great, bundles off eBay are perfect! The clothes can get very stained. Especially when you hit 6 Months weening!

PorridgeLove · 05/04/2019 15:35

Yeah, don't bother with outfits and dress-up clothes. DC2 is a newborn and only wears bodysuits and sleep suits. I have no plans to dress him in anything else for the first 9 months and preferably not until child care starts. I would just add that if your baby spits up then you will need upward of 12 changes of clothes a day.

LouB1990 · 05/04/2019 19:30

Hi my baby hasn’t arrived yet but so far I have bought
Newborn vests & baby grows x3 of each
0-3 vests & baby grows x10 of each
0-3 outfits x4
3-6 vests & baby grows x12 of each
3-6 outfits x6
0-3 x1coat
3-6 x2 coats

I also have no idea of that to buy x

DreamingofSunshine · 05/04/2019 19:36

I remember asking this question as I live overseas and wanted to stock up on the UK.

I had 10-15 vests and 10-15 sleepsuits in newborn (up to 10lb) and 0-3. DS was 8lb and very long but lost a lot of weight due to jaundice so the newborn stuff was used for far longer than I anticipated.
