I have just had a scan at 24 weeks, and have been told that the baby has a thickened membrane between the top and bottom of the heart. I am in Kazakhstan, and the radiologist advised me to get home as soon as possible because in The West they can operate on this condition.
Of course I am coming back to the UK, but I have never heard of anyone having a heart op inutero. You only see it in magazine articles about new wonder techniques. Have any of you done this? Does anyone know anything about it? Is it something they may only do at a specific place (like at a central London hospital)?

I'm just a dit desperate for some information, and to know if I need to hassle to get referred to somewhere special.

I posted this in health, but I thought I'd try here as well:

All advice welcome

I'm afraid I can't help you - I've only ever heard of operations being performed in-utero on the TV etc.

I would imagine there are very few consultants that can do these operations, so you would need a specialised hospital (and yes, its likely to be in London).

Best of luck with finding out more information about this - I'd imagine your best source of info would be someone (informed) from the NHS.

Good luck

Found you the website. There is an amazing consultant in London who's featured highly for his success in-utero on fetuses. www.fetalmedicine.com/f-fmc.htm His name is Professor Kypros Nicolaides. This is the man you need to get hold of. Start via the website and I'm sure you'll find his practice. Another link for you is www.kch.nhs.uk/services/womens-services/harris-birthright-centre Hope this helps. Good luck. He's the man for you for sure.
