Backpack or shoulder type changing bag?!

Currently looking at changing bags, backpack styles seem to be the most popular but I prefer the look of shoulder type.. are there any benefits to one over the other?

Clueless first time mum can't work it out!

Most definitely backpack style. I had a shoulder style one with my first baby but will be getting a backpack style for number 2 due in July. Without exception every mum I know has switched from shoulder style to backpack style between child one and subsequent children. In general I found the selection was better for the shoulder style and they were definitely more attractive on the whole. I guess that’s why most FTM go for them but the backpack is just so much more practical.

Agree with pp, I used my shoulder one for about 3 months then realised it was much easier with a back pack and have been using that since!

I swapped to a backpack one and it was such a game changer. Especially when they get bigger and heavier

MummaGiles · 03/04/2019 18:51

Had a shoulder type one. Never used it on my shoulder. Was constantly connected to the pram handle. Will be getting a backpack (same brand though - pacapod as I love the way they’re organised) for DC2 due in the summer.

Backpack.

When the becomes a toddler and you still need to cart all their junk around with you, having two hands free and being able to chase them down the street / wrestle them out of the park without having to worry about dropping your bag is invaluable.

Whichever will fit on your pushchair handles. I rarely carried mine, it was always on the pushchair!

Bambamber · 03/04/2019 18:56

Backpack. With my daughter we had a shoulder style one but it was just really cumbersome and keep sliding off my shoulder, and just generally got in the way. After a few months we got backpacks and it was so much easier. We didn't use a pram though, always just used a baby carrier

Depends what your lifestyle is like. If you are active and enjoy walking, parks, etc and feel you might use a sling then a backpack is much better. The shoulder ones are only ever used to hang off the pushchair.
I actually used something like this

In any bag that I fancied using.

DS lives in his carrier so backpack for me. I have DS on my front, backpack on my back and then hands are free!

babysharkah · 03/04/2019 19:01

Backpack. Hands free is the way forward.

kgeal3 · 03/04/2019 20:02

A little of subject but can anyone recommend a nice stylish brand of changing bag? I had a lovely yummy mummy one last time but want something different

physicskate · 03/04/2019 20:17

My husband doesn't find the backpack embarrassing to wear... very easy to find stuff too! But I've never had the book bag type to compare to!!

SoHotADragonRetired · 03/04/2019 20:21

Backpack. More comfortable, more unisex, works with a sling or can be hung or clipped on the buggy. Also much cheaper - a common or garden backpack works perfectly fine, or you can get a fancy pants specific changing or leather one if you like - just Google "backpack changing bag".

2 DC, four and one, and haven't touched the cross body specific changing bag in, oh, about four years.

mummatom · 03/04/2019 20:54

I had a shoulder bag to begin with and it was hard to carry anything else otherwise the bag with slip down to my front 🤦🏼‍♀️ I've now got a ruck sake type bag (my sister used just an ordinary ruck sake which was cheaper!) and it's much better as you have your hands free! I could take my bag, the pushchair and the carrier (if LO decided the pushchair was a no no when she was tiny) and it didn't matter that I had s bag on my back while carrying her!

Byebyefriend · 03/04/2019 20:58

I got a pacapod for my anniversary present (I did ask for it) that does both.

this one

Shahlalala · 03/04/2019 21:18

DD only wanted to be in the sling so I always used a backpack so it wasn’t in the way.
Like people say once they get bigger it’s much easier having backpacks. Two catching hands that way!

PBobs · 03/04/2019 22:55

Backpack. I have a bad back/SI joint issues so carrying uneven weight is not something I can do. Plus I like being hands free. I'm just going to buy a regular backpack though. Not a baby specific one.

Maddis136 · 04/04/2019 16:32

By the time it’s loaded with all the things your child needs you won’t care what it looks like as it will be so heavy. Backpack so much more practical and there are some really fun ones if you like. Tiba + Marl are pretty trendy.
