Drinking before I knew I was pregnant

I can't believe it. I've done three pregnancy tests and all were negative. Been away for the weekend and probably drank a bottle and half of wine over two days, plus half a bottle of wine the weekend before. Just done a test and it's positive.

I'm terrified I've done damage to the baby. I feel physically sick (not pregnancy related) that I may have caused the baby some harm. Anecdotal and evidence based experience either way would be helpful to help me make an inform decision. It's still really early on so I can't be more than 4 weeks (period due now, not late).

Another word or two of reassurance - your placenta doesn’t take over supplying nutrients to the baby till around 8-9 weeks, until then, they get their sustenance from the yolk sac. Due to this what you eat and drink in the very early weeks of your pregnancy doesn’t really ‘get to’ the embryo so they’re less likely to be affected.

Don't be so hard on yourself, everything should be fine now you've found out so early on. I was told that the baby will attach properly around 10-12 weeks so that's when alcohol can really make a difference. Whether that's entirely correct I can't confirm, but the fact you've found out and will be aware of it way before that can only do your baby good.

I did the same thing, drank a lot more than that amount before I found out I was pregnant. I was about 6 weeks when I found out - now I'm 37 weeks and no issues have appeared throughout.

PS congrats!

If I told you what I drank before I found out I was pregnant it would make your eyes water. I'm happy to report that said pregnancy is now an athletic, healthy as an ox, intelligent teen.

My Mum got pregnant with me at 23, was on holiday in Greece with my dad and thought I was a hangover for 3 days...no ill effects that I’m aware of and I’m 30 something now!

Thank you all! I'm going to embrace the healthy living with a vengeance from now!

To my eternal shame I did tequila shots about 48 hours before it dawned on me I was pregnant Blush.

I didn't drink again during the pregnancy, although felt felt in dire need of a stiff drink when discovering i was having twins at an early scan.

Thanks congratulations!
