Clary sage oil. Does it work? Have you tried it?

I'm planning on trying clary sage oil to help to kick things off when I get to 38/39 as I'm so uncomfortable with SPD and am absolutely dreading the possibility of going past my due date.

I've read a mixed bag of reviews online, some claiming it's magic stuff and others saying it didn't do a thing.

What do you know about it? Have you tried it, or know anybody who has?

Nothing works except time.

HarrietM87 · 30/03/2019 15:24

Had loads of clary sage baths and it did nothing - induced at 13 days late.

Raspberry leaf tea doesn’t bring on labour, it’s supposedto make your contractions more efficient. I drank loads and had a short labour (3 hrs) so could have been that. Neither can do any harm.

Clary sage or raspberry leaf tea is not going to bring on labour, otherwise no one would need to be medically induced. Your baby will be born when it is ready, I'm afraid. What RLT, dates and clary sage are reported to do are help your body once you are already in labour.

HTH

I know all of the medical info; but when you're overdue with a medically large (macrosomia) baby you will try anything!! Grin

Nowthenforever2019 · 30/03/2019 15:32

The trouble is that people get their hopes up and then when you hit 40 weeks, you feel properly overdue when you are still only "full term". Induction increases the chance of medical invention and therefore increased risks to mother and baby.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. Your baby may not be ready for a few weeks yet, best to assume 42 weeks then 38 in my mind, as it's a real struggle mentally if those last few weeks aren't expected!

Greenlegobox · 30/03/2019 15:35

The last few weeks are crap alright. You'd be better off investing in a good box set to try to distract yourself.

Februaryblooms · 30/03/2019 15:43

My last two came within week 38 naturally, the thought of going to 42 seems like torture Grin

Its true though they'll come when they're ready. I'm more than happy to partake in trialling some old wives tale theories though, the safe ones obviously

Yes worked a treat for me. Overdue and had enough. Relaxing bath, 6 drops of clary sage and off to bed. Woke up at 6am and it was all kicking off. Could have been the fact I was overdue and just accepted it was induction time and the fact I was relaxed about it though.

Februaryblooms · 30/03/2019 16:51

How common is it for women to go to 42 weeks, do you think?

Is induction at 40 a rarity?

I'm becoming more immobile by the day and my poor toddler is baring the brunt of me not being able to do much with him.

Even changing his nappy is a mammoth task at the moment.

SPD is such a nightmare

Well, all my babies were born within 24 hours of the clary sage oil hitting the burner. So I’m saying yes! I was 40 weeks each time though, so you could just say they were due...

Greenlegobox · 30/03/2019 17:01

I had DD within 8 hours of having a McDonald's. Not sure it means anything. I hear you about the SPD though OP. I'm on crutches and signed off work at 32 weeks because of it. It's torture. I sit on the couch with a bag of frozen peas between my legs and take a shed load of paracetamol. Does little good.

Februaryblooms · 30/03/2019 17:13

McDonald's always makes me need the loo (sorry tmi) so maybe there's something in there which irritates the stomach muscles and uterus Grin

I'll be putting the clary sage on a burner, a few drops in the bath and diluted with a carrier oil and massaged into the bump (not all at once though.. just incase)

Sorry to hear you're suffering with it too @Greenlegobox do you have long left to go?

I find getting out of bed in the morning so long winded these days, it feels like my pelvis is going to snap in half Shock

Greenlegobox · 30/03/2019 17:23

Getting out of bed is torture alright. Last pregnancy I was advised to try to keep active. This time I ignored that advice and am doing as little as possible. House is a tip, dog is fat, toddler is going feral but I feel way better. I've 8 weeks left.

Novinosincebambino · 30/03/2019 19:57

I did the majool dates from 38 weeks after being promised I wouldn't go over if I did that. 40 +11 and I was putting all my hopes in clary sage! Very very quick labour too 👍🏻
