Tongue Tie in 2nd Child

My son was born with a very severe tongue tie, it made feeding a living nightmare and even thinking about it now makes me want to cry. He had it snipped - twice - but feeding never improved. I'm now 33 weeks with my second child and I've heard a lot of people say it's likely she will be born with tongue tie too? I struggle to find much evidence for this which makes me doubt it's truthfulness, but it is making me worry. Has anyone got any experience of their second child having/not having tongue tie following first born having it? Hope this makes sense x

I'm a health visitor and never heard this. I know a lot of tongue ties are related to folic acid that has been taken for more than the 12 weeks. Get seen by the feeding team before you are discharged.

My first had a tt, took 5 (agonising) weeks to get it sorted.

My 2nd also had a tt, it took 3 weeks to get sorted. I'd have been on it sooner but i asked a midwife to check on day 1 and she said there was no tt, so for 3 weeks I wondered why feeding was so bloody painful, until we saw a proper bf counsellor.

hello there i have two boys both had tongue ties my first was quite severe i couldn't ween him properly as any lumpy foods he would bring back up the docs finally said that he needed an op he was 1 and a half and straight after he ate some fries and i cried that my baby could eat proper food my second son i was very aware and asked them to check straight away for a tongue tie sure enough he had one he had it snipped at two weeks old and was completely fine im now pregnant with my 3rd baby and will be looking out for a tongue tie when they are born i was told by the doctor it mostly runs in boy siblings xx

My experience very similar to kungfupidge dd1 had 'mild' tongue tie which ended up in surgery at age 2 due to difficulty with solid food.

Dd2 the specialist also said was 'mild' and would not usually intervene but was happy to snip due to dd1 history, had it done at 2 weeks and no problems. So I suspect does run in family even in girls

There's a genetic link. My husband has a complete tongue tie; two of my three children also had them. I has the last ones tongue tie snipped and it made an enormous difference with feeding.

Thank you ladies. This has been really helpful - albeit slightly deflating. I'll know to look out for it straight away though and to ask for help sooner this time. I desperately want to feed and it just made it so hard last time. Think I'm braver to ask for support this time though x

I agree - I reckon its likely that’s there’s a genetic link - my DH has a large tongue tie (undiagnosed until I told him about it!) and DD had the same snipped at 2 weeks. Fully expecting number 2 to have the same.

Hi OP, sorry not what you want hear but both my boys had tongue ties. With ds2 is was so much quicker and easier to get it sorted. I also started expressing a lot while trying to get him to latch while we waited so my supply was fine. In 3 weeks we were good to go as opposed to DS 1 and 9 weeks. I was also much better at asking for help quicker.

DS had tongue tie and we really struggled with BF- it never worked and I expressed and mixed fed.

DD- no idea if she’s tongue tied because I never thought it would be a family trait and never checked, just cracked on with BF thinking that I’d got one who’d read the books. She only stopped BF at 3, very reluctantly.

Hopefully it won’t be a problem for you 🤞🏼

My firstborn had severe tongue tie which was snipped in his second week after an agonising period of unsuccessful feeding. Second born also had a tongue tie which affected feeding but no where near as severe. Due to the difficulties we had with first child we chose to go private and had it done in the first week. Cost around £150 and was well worth it as breastfeeding was a breeze after. Good luck. Search around for ‘lactation consultant’ if you have a lengthy waiting list on nhs.

DS1 had an "unusual" tie that took a couple of agonising weeks to be identified.
With DS2, the midwife looked at him, told me he had all his fingers and toes, and I asked about a tongue tie. She looked slightly surprised, but checked, and told me he had a slight one, so I asked for the referral before he had even fed. His was nowhere near as bad as his brothers, but he didnt truly start piling in the weight until it was divided, even if feeding wasn't painful.

#2 had TT, #1, 3, 4 didn't...
