Dreading the Sickness again- any tips?

I have just got my BFP today, hurrayyyy.Smile
And although I am so pleased, I now have a growing sense of dread about the sickness.

My last pregnancy with DS was 8 years ago and the sickness was debilitating and lasted for 5 months. Now I am nervous about how I will cope with a 7 year old to look after along with the sickness, as it is just so draining.
Obviously DP can help but he works shifts and won’t be there most of the time.

So I was wondering what your best tips are that helped you? Any old wives tales or foods etc? I lived off ice poles for months last time and everyone told me ginger but that didn’t help it at all Sad

Almonds helped me last time and cream crackers. Also cutting down on dairy.

Carrots and dry weetabix is also good for lining the stomach if you are being sick.

I got my bfp on Monday and although having nausea no physical sickness so far... last time I was signed off for 2 weeks at about 10 weeks so dreading if it happens again. Although no 2 pregnancies are the same and you might be lucky this time.

Good luck op

See your GP and get medication
It’s safe
It’s been used millions of times and no issues to mum or baby
You do not have to suffer

Whereareyouspot · 22/03/2019 06:50

Someone is recommending carrots to eat to someone who is being sick?!

Eeeeeewewweee

53rdWay · 22/03/2019 06:56

Yes yes yes to getting medication. If you start off with the first-line milder medications now rather than waiting until you feel really bad, they have a better chance of really helping. Ginger does nothing and it’s horrible to throw up!

Emma9876 · 22/03/2019 07:06

I was on antisickness tablets from 10 weeks until the sickness stopped at 23 weeks! I was still sick occasionally but so much better! I work in a hospital and was being sick in-between patients and it was a nightmare so the tablets were brilliant!

KBLondon · 22/03/2019 07:18

In case it gives you a bit of hope, I had terrible sickness with my first that only began to ease off slightly when I was nearly a week overdue. I'm currently 8 weeks in to my second pregnancy and the sickness is much milder so far (hoping this continues!). Eating little and often is actually working for me this time (last time that just meant vomiting more often).

So different pregnancies can be different. There's no guarantee but you can hope!

I've also heard good things about getting medication early. Last pregnancy I waited until 20 weeks and medication did help with the vomiting but not the nausea. I think if you get it under control earlier it can keep it from getting so bad.

Different foods work for different people, it if you're looking for ideas to try, foods that worked for me last time were banana bread and salted pretzels. And on days when I could keep nothing down, a thick vanilla milkshake seemed to go down ok for some reason.

I also tend to feel best in the morning and worse as the day goes on, so I try to drink about a litre of ice cold water in the morning while I'm feeling better, and starting out hydrated seems to make all the difference. I've only had one day so far when I couldn't get the water down in the morning (ran out of ice so it was lukewarm which for some reason makes it harder with nausea) and the rest of the day just got worse and worse. It ends up being a vicious circle where if you don't eat or drink you can't eat or drink and all just goes downhill from there.

Dueinnov19 · 22/03/2019 07:49

Carrots contain alot of fibre and water so really good as a replacement. The chewing also makes you feel like you are eating so help you to feel fuller even though you have only eaten a small amount.

I forgot about salted crisps in general! Anything salted worked

GusleBusle · 22/03/2019 08:34

Thanks everyone for your responses... I didn’t even know you could get medication from the doctor! Last time my midwife told me to buy travel sickness medication from the chemist, which did take the edge off slightly. I wasn’t told that the doctor would help so that’s good news!

@53rdWay agree about the ginger! I still can’t stand the smell or taste of it to this day after throwing it up last time... it’s the worst!

@KBLondon I was exactly the same, never actually sick in the mornings, felt sick all day but by the time I was on my way home from work the sickness would start. So drinking icey water in the mornings will probably help me too, thank you.

I used to be walking to my bus stop at 6 in the morning with ice poles to get me through the nausea... somehow that was the solution I thought of instead of taking ice water so I probably won’t look as crazy this time Atleast if my sickness is bad. I really hope this pregnancy isn’t as bad but I’m thinking the worst, hoping for the best.

I second going to the Dr, and I read some studies that found that, in women who had previously suffered severe sickness, the medication worked much better if taken regularly before symptoms appeared - so there was a better outcome in women who took the medication as soon as they found out they were pregnant, than women who waited until morning sickness appeared. If it was really bad last time, it might be worth looking into this?

KBLondon · 29/03/2019 18:13

And after thinking I'd overcome sickness with ice water and small, frequent meals... the all day vomiting has begun for me anyway at around 9 weeks.

My main tip now (for myself too) would be to go to the gp and see what medication they can give you. I probably should have done that myself before the vomiting started...

Angelinthenightx · 29/03/2019 21:04

Ive been using those travel sickness bands they have made me feel less sick.

Georgepigthedragon · 29/03/2019 21:12

The second time round I started anti sickness medication straight away and it really helped. I also recommend napping whenever you can and eating raw carrots and celery.

Leleophants · 30/03/2019 08:42

Always have a range of snacks in your bag and give yourself extra time to do things in the morning. Orange juice or a sugary drink can help as can a range of crackers, dry biscuits and bananas.

Newyearsameoldshit · 30/03/2019 08:46

A prescription from the GP was the only thing that helped me.
Throwing up ginger in its various forms is one of life's more unpleasant experiences Sad

SSRainbow · 30/03/2019 08:49

Oh this was me, the minute I got my BFP instant fear of what nausea was to come! It didn’t help that this was my worst pregnancy and already have two dc under three to care for, whilst working... for me the sick feeling was way worse when I was tired so try to sleep as much as you can, I craved protein - nuts, hummus, cooked chicken breasts, anything too carby made me uncomfortably bloated and I never found anything that worked a miracle but each day you experiment with a few new things, do some more research and generally feel as though you are getting it all under a bit more control... the first few weeks weren’t too bad as the nausea came in waves that passed, around 9 weeks the tiredness kicked in on top of the all day general feeling of crap and by then you’re hoping you’ll start feeling better in a few more weeks. Good luck, you never know, you might sail through this time with mild symptoms!

Fr3d · 30/03/2019 08:50

I was way sicker on my first than second pregnancy...fingers crossed for you

GusleBusle · 31/03/2019 13:01

Thanks for the messages and advice, it’s good to hear from others who get it too, I am the only person I know in RL that has suffered with sickness. I’m still holding up At 5 weeks + 2 just hoping it doesn’t set in too bad, as I know I was about 6 weeks when it started last time.

I did go to the doctors but they wouldn’t prescribe me anything until the sickness starts so I need to call them if I get sickness. Was hoping to be prepared but they said they wouldn’t know if I actually had sickness if I started it before I was sick and they don’t want to mask it .... not entirely sure why they need to know I am definitely suffering from sickness anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️. I’m happy to mask it and not know... the doctor doesn’t agree lol.

I have ordered the travel sickness bands and am trying to be prepared this time... hoping I have an easier time this time.

I swapped taking my pregnancy vitamins from morning to evening and that made a massive difference. Don't know if that will help you but worth a go if you take yours in the morning! xx

Maybeayemaybenaw · 31/03/2019 17:18

What sickness medication did everyone get prescribed? I am going to book an appointment this week.

Newyearsameoldshit · 31/03/2019 19:20

Cyclizine. Made me incredibly sleepy for a few days till my body got used to it.
Didn't eliminate the nausea and vomiting entirely, but kept a lid on it and allowed me to get back to work. Good luck!

Natsku · 31/03/2019 19:26

Urgh I'm sorry they wouldn't prescribe them to you yet, even when it's known that starting the meds early makes them work better/stops the sickness taking hold so much.

Natsku · 31/03/2019 19:26

Oh and look for the hyperemesis support thread somewhere here on MN, I found it invaluable during my last pregnancy.

Claply · 31/03/2019 20:46

Haven't read the thread so sorry if I'm repeating:

Loads of water
Watery fruit
Sea bands!!! All day every day!!!
Ginger capsules eased it a little.

Congratulations xxx

I'm on baby 4 with sickness and I honestly don't know how I'm coping 🤣 I'm taking it day by day tbh. I also work with children so trying to ignore constant nausea and not only look after my own children but also work with them looking after them as a job has been so hard when I just want to be in bed all day. All I can suggest that helps me for a few seconds is sipping water constantly and dry biscuits but it never goes away. Part and parcel I guess 🤢🤣😭
