Lansinoh. All the way!

Get you a place where your back won't be sore - make a nest of pillows somewhere.

An NCT counsellor taught me the '10 second' trick.

Get baby on, exhale, if the nipple is still sore after 10 seconds or so, pop baby off and try again. DD2 had to learn to open her mouth wide enough and I had to learn how to be quick getting her on the nipple properly before she started to suckle.

But had a very sore left nipple with blisters for a week before I learned that, tho!

lansinoh is the BEST cream

And yes lots of new babies spent most of the 1st 6 wks establishing your supply and feeding seemingly endlessly.
it does get easier although I'm not sure about the semi skimmed comment

Hi,

Haven't had my baby yet so have no experience of b/f but attending a local b/f group one of the moms said the best thing she found was to rub some of her milk into the sore areas and let it air whilst dryer. Seemed to do the trick for her so maybe worth a go.

Ohhh I can't wait

Caz10 · 10/07/2007 16:26

This is not my experience but a friend's, but she's oassed it on to me as something useful she swears I'll need to know...! As FEP said, expressed breast milk rubbed in is apparently amazing...

rozzyraspberry · 10/07/2007 16:38

Lansinoh breast pads are good too - don't stick to your nipples if they're a bit raw.

To be honest for me I found it took 6 weeks for the pain to go so don't get despondent if you think it seems to be never ending -stick in there and good luck!

throckenholt · 10/07/2007 16:39

kamillosan - the one in the tube not the tub - it is great stuff - for anything sore.

alicet · 10/07/2007 17:25

I can second Lasinoh too - fantasic stuff.

I had all manner of problems bf my son too so you're not alone. Apparently its quite common for them not to get satisfied easily in the evenings as your milk is poorer quality then. Make sure you're eating well yourself (yes I know this is damn near impossible with a tiny baby!) and also drinking plenty of fluids. You could also try to express first thing when your milk is creamier and then give this to your dd in the evening - your dp could even do this to give you a break.

Another godsend for me was a fantastic book by Claire Byams-Cook called 'what to expect when you're breastfeeding and what if you can't' You can buy it on Amazon. Full of sensible advice and practical ways to help.

You could also try the NCT breastfeeding helpline - you don't need to have been a member or to have been to their classes in order to get in touch with them 0870 4448708. They're not open 24 hours I don't think but open well into the evening.

If your nipples are cracked and bleeding (sorry if tmi!) then nipple shields can be great to allow them time to heal. Ds fed perfectly happily through these ad without them I would have given up. I found the avent ones best!

Good Luck!!!!!!

I always used Kamillosan but I have heard great things about Lansinoh

ProfYaffle · 10/07/2007 17:41

Lansinoh is fab. If your nipples are cracked try putting Lansinoh on and then a breast shell for 40 mins, it keeps the skin moist and aids healing. Also try checking out kellymom.com, lots of advice on there.

BetsyBoop · 10/07/2007 17:46

another vote for lansinoh, it's fabulous stuff

It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way, you should only need one tube.

ow82 · 10/07/2007 17:58

lansinoh, definatly, nipple sheilds may help you if you're really sore.

I had a little system bit sad but was fine after a few days - feed baby, wipe boobs with a clean flannel to give them a little wash, apply cream and fresh pad every time after every feed both sides - bit of a ball ache nad expensive but I swear it really helped.

apart from that it helped me deep breath in and then out once latched. the soreness does go, and baby is still quite new to it all, I think it took a good 6 weeks for me to be 'ok' if you like with the feeding.

also have you tried co feeding if she's feeding so often? (might help you get a bit of rest at the same time)

you're doing fab keep going strong and we're all here for you any questions give us a shout - also ask your M/W to check the latch etc - mine showed me the rugby hold which helped no end till DS was about 4 months and too long really to do that with but by then I was confident with the accross the tum hold.

beckmo · 11/07/2007 09:57

lanisoh here too. Avent washable pads work well too...disposable ones were costing me a fortune. My DD is nearly 3 weeks old and feeds ALL day. Sleeps well at night but I am stuck to the sofa from morning to 9pm.Putting her in a sling sometimes works as sometimes it appears to be a comfort thing in the day.
Evenings though...blimey...you would have thought I had starved her all day. It's really hard but I am assured it will calm down in the next 3 to 5 weeks and I am spurred on by the fact that she is gaining weight.....

Holding out for day 21 now I have read your post!

pirategirl · 11/07/2007 10:00

Kamilosan, great healign stuff, totally recommend it.

moondog · 11/07/2007 10:01

Kitten, your milk is fine from the start. It is tailor made for your baby and just the most perfect thing in the world for her so well done to you!

They feed a lot at this stage to stimulate the breast to make and maintain a plentiful supply so don't ever think that if she feeds a lot it is because your milk is too thin/not plentiful enough.

The baby is merely stimulating them enough to ensure the creation and maintenence of an optimal supply. They're only tiny, but they know exactly what they are dpoing.
Clever eh??

Congratulations!

kittenbaby · 12/07/2007 10:11

thank you so much for all your help and encouragement
ive managed over two weeks now and really want to keep doing it
just hard at times when my mum and aunts all tell me to put her on bottles none of them bf so i dont think they know what they are talking about
mum comes out with unhelpful comments like youve been feeding her for how long?
that would never of been allowed in my day
and that she didnt have enough milk and am i sure i hav got enough ,milk
then my aunt goes you wanna get hr on bottles
luckily my dh is supportive
and thinking im doing well
your encouragement really helps
ive sent dh out to get Lansinoh because that seemed the most popular choice and still a bit too sore to go into town due to 4th degree tears and repair operation
cheers xxxxxxx
