So I work 2.5 days a week. How do I work out what bank holiday I’m entitled to on maternity? If there’s 8 in a year am I entitled to 4 as I’m effectively doing half a full week.

Each company policy is different.

I'm entitled to what I get when I'm still at work (I work 3 days and bank holiday pro rata entitlement is 5 days)

Do your working days fall on set days each week or are they on a rota basis? What happens when you are working and a Bank Holiday occurs?

The best people to speak to would be your HR department or provider as they will have the correct information regarding calculating entitlement.

4 does sound right but I would check with HR

8/5*2.5=4

I work 2 full days and one half day Monday - Wednesday . If there’s a bank holiday on a Thursday or Friday i get half back.

My company said I was entitled to any bank holidays that fell on my normal working days....I don’t work Mondays, so only got the Good Friday and Christmas/New year bank holidays. I think it’s all about the wording in your contract, and depends if it says you get x days annual leave plus bank holidays, or x days annual leave including bank holidays.

With my first pregnancy I got nothing back for bank holidays at all

Everyone is entitled to 28 days off a year as a legal minimum, it's based on a 5 day week and includes bank holidays. So the legal minimum you are entitled to would be 10 full days and 4 full days bank holidays. Most employers work out holiday entitlement on an hourly basis for part time workers or people on unusual schedules such as compressed days, based on the contracted full day hours. This is to ensure everyone gets the same. You may be contractually entitled to more but not less.

This came up at work and the Union confirmed it. 2 of us worked on a split week and the other worker insisted on working the first half of the week. After it was confirmed she was crowing that she got more holiday and was incensed to discover that it was not the case. In fact I was better off as I had full flexibility to take my holiday but she had to take bank holidays off.

@houseplantinvasion unless your employer is giving you additional regular holiday ensuring you get 5.6 weeks off a year they are acting illegally. They can insist you take your bank holidays from that entitlement but can't give you less holiday for not working Mondays. www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/rights-at-work/holiday/working-on-bank-holidays/

Thanks KoraBora, I did go through it all and work it out at one point, but I think i came to the conclusion they were just about ok the way they do it, because I get 25 days leave (pro-rata’d to 20 days as I work 4 days a week), with any bank holidays that fall on my days on top of that. I will have another look though to double check! Thank you

Houseplantinvasion. Do check and remember that the remaining fixed date bank holidays are more likely to fall on a Monday due to weekend. It could that some years you get your minimum and others you won't. If it turns out you are getting less don't let them fob you off with what's in the contract as no contract can override statute.

In my policy, I only get off the bank holidays I'm on leave for. So whilst there's 8 in a year, there's only 5 that fall within my maternity leave period. So in cases like that, you may only be entitled to 2.5.
