Sunny Side Up at 39 Weeks

Hi all :)

I'm 39 weeks today and for the last few weeks my boy has been head down, which is obviously good. But even though I'm due in one week, he is still 'sunny side up'. His limbs are always either to the right or the left, and sometimes I swear they are all at the front. I absolutely love the feeling of his little arms and legs moving and seeing them move so strongly. But isn't he supposed to be facing my back now ready for delivery?

I had an extra scan yesterday due to reduced movements, and they estimated he is now 8lbs 7 (big growth spurt since the 35 weeks scan!). The first thing my mum said was 'fillipin' heck he will tear you to shreds if he doesn't turn round, your brother was only 6lbs and he was born face up and it was so agonising I felt like I had an out of body experience!' (thanks mum).

What are your experiences with a sunny side up baby so close to the due date? And did your baby turn the correct way round by the time you gave birth? If they didn't. did you need intervention? What was the birth like? Please be honest, I am ready to hear even the worst as want to be prepared (I think!). :)

No experience personally, but I do remember doing exercises and sitting in a certain way to encourage baby to stay in the best position.

Have a look at the Spinning Babies website - lots of advice on there about how to get babies to turn around.

My DS was born at 39 weeks, 8lb 3, tried unsuccessfully to push him out for 2 hours and they then realised he was trying to come out sideways. So I was told to lay on my side for an hour to hopefully move him, he did and went back to back. Honestly it wasn’t that bad! I did tear and I did have stitches but honestly it really was ok, In fact the worst thing about the whole labour was the stitches!
In fact my husbands favourite memory of the birth was our little boys face being born (specifically his nose!), despite the fact that I told him to stay away from the business end!!! Blush

I did everything to move my baby and she stayed back to back.
In labour she stayed the same.
By the time I got to fully dilated she was still completely back to back. She then moved to the perfect position just in time to be born 😂

My ds was born at 37+3 and was sunny side up.

He wasn’t seen like till he was crowning.

The labour was painful, much more painful than it was with my first born but apart from that it wasn’t any different.

He just came out ready to face the world

Thanks ladies for your replies! Haha I've told my husband he has to stay at my head end at all costs too lol. Going to have a look at Spinning Babies now thanks x

Also, instead of starting a new thread for this, does this sound like pre-labour pains?

For the last couple of weeks off and on I've been having what feels like a very mild tummy ache around my bump, and my back has mild pain at the same time. It lasts a few minutes, in fact is happening now even. :)

Possibly

Or it could just be braxton hicks

If you are worried at any time though, please call your midwife

I was born like that, about 7lbs, and my mum had a straightforward labour without intervention. She does say I was definitely the most painful though (I have two little sisters born facing the other way). She says that because I was first, she dreaded the next one, but that by comparison it was a breeze.

I had a normal labour and only realised he was B2B when I read my notes. Don't think midwives told me so then it wouldn't become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Honestly, it was fine!

All three of mine have been back to back before labour started. I’ve since had physio and found out that I have a misaligned pelvis which probably encourages them to lie this way. My first birth was not good. No one realised she was back to back and I was in so much pain I had an epidural. Lying on my back was the worst thing I could have done, she didn’t turn in labour and came out looking at the ceiling. The midwife later told me she was impressed I managed to get her out, I was pushing for about 3 exhausting hours. My next two started labour back to back too but I stayed upright and active and both turned and were born the ‘right’ way round. Dc2 I spent a lot of time on the birth ball and on all 4s in labour and was born in 4 hours all in, and dc3 was born in the pool in less than an hour. I’m a week away from having number 4 and the difference in movements has had me worried, til I realised she’s actually NOT back to back, so all the movements I’m used to feeling are aimed at my back this time. I’m still intending to stay as active as I can, I’ve told dh under no circumstances to let them make me lie down on the bed. You’re prepared for this as you KNOW your baby is back to back. I had no idea first time round and was frightened by the level of pain.
