2nd midwife appointment. What to expect?

I have my 2nd appointment in about 2 weeks time I have answered family history questions, had bloods taken, estimated weight and height as it was all very rushed and sent on my way at my first. Then had my scan and they did the blood for screening so what is next? I assume I get results when I see her but what else are we likely to go through? how long does it usually last?

My second midwife appointment is in 3+ weeks time (I’ll be not quite 16 weeks). She told me at my first appointment that she will weigh me again and will do a urine dip; she will discuss my blood test results from this week and anything that comes up at my scan; she also said she will try and listen in with a Doppler and see if she can pick up their heartbeats, but warned it may be a little early for this.

We are not having the combined blood test because, in my personal situation, it is automatically flawed with no adjustment for our circumstances (donor egg pregnancy in my 40’s with egg donor in 20’s) so that will not be a consideration.

Lastly, we will chat about my consultant appointment (may or may not have seen the hospital twin team by that point) and future tests that I will be offered.

They will also take your blood pressure. In the front of my notes is an explanation of what happens at each appointment.

My first appointment was very rushed as she was delivering a baby when due to see me so I'm sure she went through everything but as it was so chaotic I didn't catch much! it's helpful knowing what to expect. do you know how long the appointment takes?

They will take blood pressure, dip your urine and if it's the 16 week one they might try and listen for a heartbeat but increasingly don't.

All in all it will probably be about 10 minutes.

The first appointment is usually the longest (although yours sounded quite rushed so they may make up for that). Generally they dip test the urine sample you take, take blood pressure, ask about any symptoms you're experiencing and ime you're usually in and out quite quickly if everything is fine. If it didn't happen the first time they may also discuss birth options, healthy eating/lifestyle in pregnancy, taking vitamins and so on. At my midwives they only weigh you at booking and at 36 weeks. They don't measure your bump until 28 weeks and I did a couple of times get the doppler with my first but they say in the notes that they don't do this routinely.

The antenatal appointment schedule guidance is listed here:

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg62/ifp/chapter/antenatal-appointments-schedule

It gives you an idea of what is discussed and the tests that are taken ect

Booking appointment is the longest and takes up to an hour, the rest are approx 20 minute appointments.

thank you. I didn't get weighed at my first just asked to estimate my weight and height Confused I was also told what birth "we" would aim for so felt a tad pushed around. it's what I wanted but felt so odd having someone tell me what I would do so early on. hoping the next appointment will be better!

I’d perhaps have a quick look at the guidelines then if you feel that anything was missed, or if you have any questions write them down and ask at your next appointment.

looking at this list on the link you posted there is an awful lot that was not covered Confused

If you look at the top of the page of the link I posted, there are links to the information that should have been discussed which give you detailed info.

I have had a look. I knew there were things we hadn't covered but it's made it pretty clear we covered next to nothing! I'm going to write lots of questions for the next appointment to make sure i get the info I'm suppose to

My 16 week appointment was pointless Imo. She just said my urine sample was fine from 12 weeks. My bloods are ok.

Took my blood pressure and sent me on my way.
