Anterior placenta/monitoring movement

I'm currently 22 weeks pregnant with my first. I've been told I've got an anterior placenta and may not feel movement until a lot later in the pregnancy, and even then I may not really feel much the whole time. I'm just really concerned about not being able to feel enough movement to monitor the babies pattern and whether they're ok or not. A friend of mines little boy was stillborn at 38 weeks and she's said to me her only advice is to really take monitoring the movements and kicks seriously. Has anyone got any advice? My midwife just said it wasn't a problem and it's relatively common, but didn't address my concerns about lack of monitoring.

Do you feel anything yet? Anterior placenta is very normal. I’ve had it both times and both times felt a lot of movement.

Habbs · 12/03/2019 11:47

@Cookit Absolutely nothing yet, no. Glad to know you still felt movement, was quite put out when my midwife said I may not feel much the whole time as if it that wasn't an issue. Hopefully he'll give me a kicking soon.

I had an anterior placenta and felt plenty (ds was long so I felt him kick and punch both sides of me at the same time!), though this isn't necessarily what you should expect as everyone carries differently. What did your midwife say about monitoring movement?

sunshine1987 · 12/03/2019 11:52

When I spoke to my friend when I found out I had an anterior placenta she said she had too, I felt her baby move plenty of times and she said she did too. So honestly wouldn’t worry. I have also started to feel baby kick now, further along than my friends but have felt it so don’t think it’s as much of a worry as it may sound x

Habbs · 12/03/2019 11:53

@meow1989 She just said there's no cause for concern at this point and to come back at 24 weeks if I still haven't felt anything at all.

I have an anterior placenta, and I'm feeling loads at 22 weeks... it might just take a bit longer to start feeling movement, but you will feel it at some point. Eventually, the baby gets much bigger than the placenta that the placenta is no longer cushioning their movements and you should be able to feel. Sometimes it just takes longer to feel movement because of baby's position or their movement patterns etc.

Once you do start feeling movement regularly, don't worry about counting kicks, just focus on taking notice if they move much less than they normally would. But remember if you're out and about all day and moving constantly, you may not feel them move very much at all. On a day you're just at home relaxing, they might not stop kicking you all day.

purplemama1990 · 12/03/2019 11:59

Also, I know I'm feeling loads at 22 weeks with anterior placenta, but both my sister and sister in law had anterior placentas in their pregnancies and they said they didn't feel anything until around 24 weeks. So it varies from person to person.

theruffles · 12/03/2019 12:03

I had an anterior placenta and didn't feel movement until about 22/23 weeks. I did feel quite a bit of movement though, especially when my daughter had hiccups! If I was ever concerned about her movement I would make a note of how often she moved in an hour by using a tally. It had nothing to do with the idea a certain number of kicks per hour is a good sign, it was more to put my mind at ease that she was actually moving. I found the Kicks Count website helpful.

You may find that your lo kicks more at a certain point in the day, early morning or evening for example. You'll get used to what is normal for you once you feel it. I think it started for me feeling like tiny bursting bubbles but I didn't recognise it as the baby moving initially.

ChariotsofFish · 12/03/2019 12:04

I felt loads with an anterior placenta. Later on, when he had his head down in my pelvis, he used to do a sort of stretch that pushed down and that sort of movement isn’t affected by anterior placenta at all. He could still kick out hard enough to make my dress move too. I wouldn’t worry about it.

GinMama1 · 12/03/2019 12:14

I had an anterior placenta, and like others, it meant that I didn't feel movement for a while, not until 22 or 23 weeks. But later on in my pregnancy I felt movement allll the time!

meganmc0301 · 12/03/2019 15:12

I'm currently pregnant with my second baby and I have an anterior placenta. I can feel so so much movement all around, I'm 26 weeks this Thursday. With my first pregnancy I can't remember where my placenta was but I never felt her as much as this wee one!

StubbleTurnips · 12/03/2019 15:18

Had anterior placenta with DS, and hardly felt anything through the entire pregnancy.
Only if I really prodded him would I get a kick back, he’s still an awkward sod now Grin

Domino45 · 12/03/2019 15:31

I’ve got an anterior placenta and didn’t feel movement until 24 weeks ish & to start with the movements were subtle. It really worried me as it’s my first too but the midwife didn’t seem overly concerned either. As the pregnancy has progressed movements have become stronger but most of mine are at the side, especially my right. Try not to worry (I know easier said than done, especially when others are feeling movements & it’s hard not to naturally).

BeHereNowx32 · 12/03/2019 15:46

@Habbs I have one, and felt movements early on. But as time went on, I’ve had a quite a lot of time when I can’t feel baby. Unless I have fizzy juice, then lie on my side and use my hands to put pressure on my bump. Then I can feel movment through my hands.
I’ve phoned the hospital loads though, and been checked once. When checked at the hospital, there was lots of movement but I couldn’t even feel it (that was at 36 weeks). So, if I’m doubt phone the hospital. But they are likely to suggest drinking fizzy juice and lying down for one hour to see if you feel anything. X

Bigonesmallone3 · 12/03/2019 15:48

U will feel movement but will probably start a lot later than most..

Iswallowtoothpaste · 12/03/2019 17:25

I’ve got an anterior placenta too. This is my second baby.

I didn’t start feeling anything regularly until 24/25 weeks. Before that time, I’d feel movement daily from around 20/21 weeks but it was sporadic and infrequent.

I’m 28 weeks today and feeling more kicks and squirms. DD moved all of the time and I had a posterior placenta with her. This one is completely different so far and I’ve been in the phone to the MAU several times already!

alwaysncxx · 12/03/2019 17:58

I have anterior placenta and have felt so much movement. I was also able to establish a pattern.

I'm 31 weeks

lambdroid · 12/03/2019 18:32

I have an anterior placenta this time, didn’t with my first.

Definitely felt movement later, but it hasn’t otherwise had any impact. If anything, I’ve felt more with this one!

I have a friend who had an anterior placenta and didn’t feel much, but she’s a lot taller and bigger built than me- I’m relatively petite and have a short torso, so I think that your body shape/size can affect it too.

Frizzy1986 · 12/03/2019 19:02

I had an anterior placenta last time I didn't feel anything until about 21-22 weeks. After that it was more waves of movement instead of kicks and jabs.
There would be occasions when I'd get a proper kick but they were quite muted compared to what other people seemed to feel. You'll get used to what is normal for you and that what you need to be looking out for, changes to the norm.

Londongirl03 · 13/03/2019 13:28

Hi all, I’m 21 + 4 and have a right lateral placenta, so partly anterior. I have had light fluttering movements on my left on and off but can’t be sure I’m having them everyday. I mainly feel baby when I’m still and relaxing. Is it ok at this stage not to feel something everyday? X

MonkeyToucher · 13/03/2019 16:18

I’ve had 2 pregnancies and with anterior placentas and as others have said - I felt movements later but once you start feeling them they will be very noticable. The thing to watch out for is a change in your baby’s pattern of movement. I wouldn’t say I had a noticable pattern until about 28 weeks
