Measuring 'Small' at 28 weeks - any experience?

Just had an appointment with the midwife this morning, and I have gone from having a 90th percentile baby at 20 week scan to 'measuring small' at 28 weeks (no scan). They want me to have a scan now to see if the placenta is working properly .. Does anyone have any experience of this? I was told not to worry but of course I am! Am 28+4.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I was measuring 'small' with ds3. Had a scan and all looked fine.

He was born on time and was the biggest of my babies at 8lb 10oz.

So, really, don't worry!

This happened to me last week. I was measuring small at 36 weeks and got sent for a growth scan. Size of the baby was fine - should be a 'normal' size baby if not a bit larger!

I know how worrying it is waiting for the scan and result but I'm sure all will be fine.

I remember reading (when in the same boat) that the midwife's measurement is only valid if it is the same midwife doing it everytime, cos they all do it differently.

And their guess of size from the scan can be up to a lb out, bigger or smaller (they don't tell you this of course).

And its also possible to have a perfectly healthy small baby.

But on the other hand, I wouldn't refuse the scan. Because there is a (very very small I think) risk that your placenta isn't doing its best and they need to keep an eye on you. And because scans are nice .

Had 5 scans from wk 16. I have MS so they wanted to keep any eye on me (WTF it affects my central nervous system, not the baby making factory) Well I played ball with them.

At 24 and 28 weeks they said Baby Boo (as bump was known) was small and at 32 and 34 weeks too. CMW said she felt things were fine

At 40+4 DS was born at a strapping 8lbs 5

Don't worry too much. 4 years on I'm still unsure why they panicked me.

Enjoy your pregnancy

I had this too .. in the event, my ds was small at 6lb, but he was extremely healthy and he certain ain't small no more!

Please don't worry. All will be well!

Same happened to me - baby's growth appeared to be slowing down at 28 weeks. Had umpteen scans 28-34 weeks (weekly, I think), also checking placenta function. Eventually they decided that the measurements at 20 weeks were probably inaccurate! DD born on due date, 7lb., no problems.
I hope this is reassuring - let us know what happens at the scan.

I was just about to start a thread like this myself, measuring 27cm at 31+4 weeks, going for scan in 2 weeks. Does mothers height come in to play? Iam 5 ft 9.

Holly29 · 09/07/2007 19:01

Guys you lot are fab.

I'm not sure if height does come into play - they didn't mention it today and I did ask lots of questions. But they did say that the fact that I was slim/petite might mean I was just having a smaller baby.

I do think they just worry that the placenta might not be working properly so I am taking comfort from the fact that my wee one does not seem to be lacking in energy at all!

I was unsure wether to post this or not, as my tales isnt as positive as others. I too measured small for my weeks, 2 things added to this. The placenta had started to fail due to high blood pressure and I had lost most of my waters (I had min allowed before they would act). My DD was born 5lb, with a few problems but now doing very well

I was measuring 4 weeks ahead throughout all of this pregnancy but am now measuring normal, which might mean I lost waters again, but am due a scan on weds to check.

I hope i havent scarced you and im sure that you'll be fine.

I had this but it turned out to be a lot of worry and aggravation over nothing. DD1 came out at 7lbs1, v. healthy.

Be warned, often hospital staff are inexperienced at doing late scans, the told me that baby had a 'growth in her brain' a specialist scan at a different hospital the next day showed this to be a normal bit of the brain hence big scare and worry over nothing.

I know they need to check everything just to be sure but the majority of us would get on better without all the scares and the stress!
