Hi guys, apologies for long post! Hoping some of you guys can share your experiences with me. This is my first and I’m 39+3, suffer from colitis. Last week I had reduced movement and ended up with growth scan - baby is measuring above the 95th percentile (all previous growth scans he has been just above average) so he was 9lb 4oz and I know they’re supposed to put on half an lb a week in the last few weeks but he seems to have been growing at a much more rapid rate than that. I’m seriously worried about tears because of the colitis. Anyone had experience of these growth scans being wrong? I know they’re less accurate the further on you get in pregnancy or has anyone had experience of big babies and deliveries? I want to insist they induce me early as I’m so anxious but don’t want to put the baby at risk or come across as a complete drama queen!

@MissMini.
I am also due this week and babies belly is measuring big, I have a scan booked later this week at 39+4 and then a review, I am then going to be induced if baby is above 9lb 9oz's so I totally think you could request a induction early.
This is my second pregnancy and the scan's last time were not accurate with weight in my opinion, He was measuring 8lb 2 at 38+0 I had him induced at 38+5 and he was 7lb 6.5oz's.
Good luck

@thegirlwithnousername thank you for replying. Did they say why they would induce you? My hospital says they don’t induce for big babies.

I gave birth four weeks ago, was told all the way along that I was having a big baby, 95th percentile... At 38 weeks I had a scan and they said he would be at least 8 pounds. He was born at 39 + 4 and was 6 pounds 9.... The scans are really not accurate!!

Thegirlwithnousername · 11/03/2019 09:54

@MissMini
No they didn't give me any specific reason for inducing me, I was just pleased they suggested it (Consultant) so I just kept quiet haha!.
Very frustrating that different trust's do thing's so different, Surely it should be standard around the UK.
My midwife has also booked me in for a Stretch and Sweep for 40+4 if I don't get induced, Maybe go down the midwife road about getting a S+S as early as you can?

MissMini · 11/03/2019 10:02

@Camsie30 congrats on your new arrival! Hope you’re both keeping well! Thanks for that, that’s reassuring!

@Thegirlwithnousername it is frustrating, I felt a bit patronised when I asked the consultant up at the hospital about it but it’s probably the way I am feeling and terrible hormones! I think I will say to my mw when I’m in this week. If it’s not going to do the baby any harm then I think I’ll push for that at least. Hopefully you have some movement soon! Keep me updated.

At 36 weeks I think they estimated my baby to be 9 lb 13 oz. He was born at 40 +5 and weighed 9 lb 10 oz. So 4 weeks and 5 days later he was actually less than they estimated. Try not to worry too much. I had a 6 lb baby with spinal block, forceps, stitches etc and my "bigger" baby was born with zero problems/ interventions not even a sticth, he just came out. Good luck, hope all goes well.

No experience on colitis but I can help with big babies.

I had growth scans every 2 weeks from 28 weeks because DD was off the charts. I had one at 38 weeks and she was measuring 10lbs. They said to come back at 40 weeks and if she was 11lb they would c-section. Well she came at 39 weeks weighing 10lb6 so they were pretty spot on. Delivery was absolutely fine, a bit of grazing and second degree tear but it healed well and I only pushed for 20 mins. They were going to induce me on the Monday but she came naturally on the Saturday so didn't need it, they were only going to induce because I kicked up a massive fuss to my midwife who felt sorry for me.

Thank you guys this is making me feel better - I know rationally everyone’s labour is different etc. I’m just not very rational at the minute 😂. It’s good to hear from people’s experiences.

I measured big and was tested for GD which was negative, they induced me at 38 and DS was born by CS at 38.4 at 9lbs so glad I didn't go over, he was really long too and has stayed on the top centile since

Daisy2990 · 11/03/2019 20:21

I was induced for size and excess fluid with my first at 40+1. He was estimated around 10lb I think. Weighed 9lb 3 or 82nd centile. So not far off.

Currently 38+3,had a growth scan at 36 weeks and she was estimated to be around 8lb 7 then. I wouldn't be surprised if she is close to 10lb.

Have a look at your notes and see if they got all the measurements... if baby is hiding they may not have captured the ones they need (IIRC femur, stomach, skull?) and that may mean the estimate is less accurate

MissMini · 11/03/2019 20:38

@Lauren83 thank you, do you mind me asking did they induce you because you were big?

@Daisy2990 lots of big babies! So close to the end! They got all the measurements it’s his stomach that’s jumped up. Lots of people seem to have been induced for size.

Yes they did, I was already consultant led due to it being IVF pregnancy with donor eggs and being on a lot of meds, they knew he was getting big so offered a section as said I was high risk of shoulder dystocia which I declined and I asked for induction, they just couldn't get me going after a few days of pessaries so I took the section. Had I not been consultant led already I may not have had the option I just think they are more used to high risk pregnancies so were happy to give me options. This was St Marys Manchester

Had a 10lb 2oz baby last time and birthed with no intervention and minor grazing. This baby is due to be big again but will know more at my extra 36 week scan.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith (parenting expert and ex-doula) recently shared on instagram that her last two babies were 11lb+ and both born safe and well as home births with no intervention.

I have friends that have had 6lb/7lb babies and horrific births. Size really isn’t an indicator of how your labour will go as everyone’s body is so different.

MissMini · 12/03/2019 05:17

Thanks @Lauren83 I’ve seen a consultant a few times but can’t see her again before the birth.

@ILiveForNachos thank you 😊 I just have to hope my body can cope!

@missmini our bodies really are miraculous! I used to bleed after a smear, find them super uncomfortable and get comments on how ‘small’ I was down there but somehow got a ‘big’ baby out no trouble! Confused
