Head engaged

Went for my midwife appointment on Thursday. I was 34+2 she told me babies head was engaged.
Does this mean giving birth could happen at any time or are they engaged for a while and it doesn't really matter?
FTM so unsure about some things lol sorry if I sound silly xx

I'm new on here so please excuse this comment. I'd like to also know the answer too. I'm 34 weeks tomorrow and I feel like the head is engaged and I have loads of pressure and discomfort.

Ovacado23 · 09/03/2019 19:35

IME the answer is yes. Baby is in birthing position and is coming out head first, birth is coming but it can still take a long time! Usually the midwife will tell you the level of effacement (cervical thinning) if babys head has been proven engaged, which is the stage before dilation! Exciting stuff but also boring af to wait for when you want baby out asap :)

@Mumy2019 @Ovacado23 I've also been having alot of pressure down below. Had it the other day and then again earlier. I would like him to stay in for a while longer but I'm so fed up of being pregnant now 😂 and I've got one more week of work left so fingers crossed he stays put for a little while longer 🤞

@Ovacado23 Same with me! I've had enough of this fiasco ha ha. I would like to get more done in the house et cetera but I don't want to bring on labour while partner is away. fml ha.

If you google it you will find that first babies head’s will engage between 34-36 weeks, which just means the head has moved into the pelvis! It can take many more weeks before the baby is actually born! My first’s head was engaged at 34weeks and he came at 39weeks! I don’t remember with dc’s 2&3 though

Longislandicedme · 09/03/2019 20:24

Just before I was 36 weeks I had a midwife appointment and my baby’s head wasn’t engaged. A woman I knew from school was pregnant and her due date was a day before mine so we always had appointments at the same time (we live in the same area). At the same appointment on the same day she was told her baby’s head was engaged. I had my baby 3 days later (4 weeks early) and she had her baby a week after her due date (5 weeks later)!

Thanks guys it's just nice to get some information about it as being a FTM I just thought omg it's happening sooner than I expected 😂
Fingers crossed he stays down and in the right position. Tbh he has had his head down on every single scan I've had including the 12 week scan so if he decides to move in the next few weeks than he will be being a little monkey 😂

On the flip side, I didn’t engage until labour

blueskiespls · 09/03/2019 20:59

From memory, don't the midwives day something like 3/5's engaged etc? And 5/5's is fully? It was 7 years ago for me!!

hiddeneverything · 09/03/2019 21:07

Sorry but it means nothing. Both of mine were engaged from 33 weeks and both of mine were two weeks late then induced. It just means you might waddle a bit more

Unicorn234 · 09/03/2019 22:46

I'm already being induced around 39 weeks anyway as got gestational diabetes.
Haha I do feel like I'm waddling now though lol x
