Why would the doctors request an additional urine sample?

Hiya! Not sure if I'm overthinking but I had my booking appointment a week ago (currently 10+3) and I've just had a call from the GP asking me to drop off another urine sample this week. Is this normal or could something be up? Not sure what major stuff they could find from a urine sample?

I would assume the sample was contaminated in some way so they need to re-do the tests.

They do check for some STIs through urine but those results would be positive or negative not inconclusive.

You may have had leukocytes (very common in pregnancy, often nothing to worry about) in your urine. I've had them three times this pregnancy and done second tests and there has been nothing problematic at all.

Could be something as simple as a little discharge in the sample has contaminated it. Try not to worry. Repeat urine tests are quite common.

Sometimes samples are contaminated or even dropped! Happened to us.

Thanks! I think on reflection it's probably nothing urgent, especially as they've just asked for me to drop one off "some time in the next week". I think I just had an initial fear as the GP was calling me on a Saturday! Thanks everyone!

I kept getting bacterial/leukocyte contaminated samples - won't go into TMI details - so did loads of these. Give yourself a wipe around down below with a damp cloth/towel before peeing and then capture the sample midflow. Sorry if that's old news to you but it solved my problems of repeat tests needed.

PS Urine samples tell them all sorts. Infections, clues to kidney issues, protein in urine, clues to diabetes, etc. But more often than not it's contaminants that's the cause of a retest.

They don’t test for STDs via urine as part of your booking appointment, they don’t even do a pregnancy test. The test is to pick up any underlying urine infection and nothing more. Sometimes if a urine sample is contaminated by vaginal discharge etc. it can give an inaccurate result and so the sample needs repeating to double check. It’s nothing to worry about at all! Congratulations x
