Polyhydramnios

Hi, this is my first pregnancy. I'm 39 and due in 3rd April. Due to having a genetic condition I was sent for extra scans at 30 and 36 weeks to monitor babys growth - which is fine - if anything she is big! My concern is that I've been told I have Polyhydramnios, which is in the mild range. However I am still worried. I'm going to have a fasting blood test tomorrow to check for gestational diabetes, but it seems unlikely that this is the cause. Has anyone else had polyhydramnios? Hearing other peoples experiences would be really helpful! Sarah Smile

Hi I had this but we didn't find out until 38weeks after I had a scan due to reduced movement. They booked me in for a rescan and appointment with a consultant when I was 40weeks at which he signed me off into midwife care again. When I had my ds his swallow was checked to make sure no obstruction. All was ok and no reason was found for it. Apart from feeling like a whale the only problem I felt I had with it was he didn't engage and I had to be induced at 42+1. Hope everything goes well for you

Thanks for your reply, I think its a problem with her swallow I'm most worried about... I know what you mean about feeling like a whale! I have all the grace of a hippo at the moment!

Yes I had this and it was because of GD. When he was born he had to get a tube down his throat and get an x ray done even before I could hold him ( I didn't mind as I had a section and it gave me a bit of time to come round.) he was fine though no problems with swallow. They might induce you as polyhydramnios carries the risk of cord prolapse but you can discuss that with the consultant at your next appointment.

I had it. I was whale like as put on 4 stone but on the bright side lost 3 stone instantly on giving birth. No GD and DC fine no problems.

Word of advice, if they break your waters to induce labour tell your DH to stand well back if he doesn't want his shoes ruined!

I also had this but it wasn't diagnosed until he was born by emergency section. Please keep an eye on the baby's movements. Any change at all go to hospital. My son was born flat.

Thank you, I will.... sorry to hear you had what sounds like a bit of a traumatic experience. Think I will feel happier once shes in my arms.

I had polyhydramnios. Bump measured 50 weeks when I was meant to be 34 and then dropped to 39 weeks after my waters broke a week later. The consultant still said there was loads of water when she did my section 2 days later. Cause was cleft lip and palate.

I had polyhydramnios with my eldest. My husband is still a bit traumatised about them breaking my waters! I had my second baby a couple of weeks ago. The waters were very very disappointing in comparison!

My eldest did have a congenial defect and was unable to swallow. She had corrective surgery on day 2. Despite knowing it was a slight possibility it was a shock. But we coped. She's fine now, and eats as well as her peers. It's good that they check at birth if it is a possibility. You probably won't notice them doing it.

Good luck!

I was diagnosed with it at 32 weeks. Consultant kept a very close eye on me and I had regular extra scans. My waters breaking was impressive!! But baby was totally fine, no problems at all and a straightforward labour
