Has anyone used this before? How accurate was it... I'm guessing it is something that has come over from America.

I found out my son's gender at 10 weeks through NIPT, although I did it to check for chromosomal abnormalities rather than the gender. I suppose it could work in the same way but just looking at the gender?

I had NIPT too and found out gender at 10 wks - so it is something easily available here already, although the cost is higher.

I'm not sure having it available cheaply is a good idea though - might encourage terminations in some places where a particular sex is "desired".

This is a 'collect yourself' thing, you prick your finger and drip the blood into the tube yourself hence the price...

I just find it a bit bizarre, I don't think I personally would want to find out the gender before I knew everything was 'ok' at 12 weeks anyway, but DH was told about this at work & I had never seen it before x

I use the Nuture app which I think is a follow on from Ovia. Most women on there are from USA and lots of them talk about having/had this done. I've seen alot of them say that it has been wrong so I think it's probably just a gimmick!

Sounds like the same technology as the harmony, panorama tests etc.

Megan2018 · 06/03/2019 16:19

@HJWT
Sex was important for me as part of NIPT as they test for issues relating to X and Y chromosome (Turners, Fragile X etc) as well as the trisomy's, so I wanted to know the outcome of all of these tests to decide whether to continue the pregnancy (I am older so risks much higher) - but that was purely to do with health and not a preference for knowing the sex. It is optional as part of NIPT, you can opt to not be told though.

@boodles101 yes apparently you have to be in a sterile environment otherwise the blood can become contaminated with F/M DNA
