Sleep Bags ??

I have just had my 24 week midwife appointment (am due 20 June 2019) this is my first baby. I told the midwife I have some sleep bags and she said do not use them as they cause overheating and just use blankets. I have been advised by other people that the sleep bags are safer and easier than blankets, any advice would be much appreciated Smile

I used them and they were brilliant. I used grosnugs to begin with because DD was too small for grobags.

They come with a temperature guide telling you which tog to use and what to wear underneath so get a room thermometer and the usual vests and sleep suits.
Next and mothercare do them with sleeves but no legs which I used when it was a bit warmer but you won't need the first sizes of them as your baby will be in the winter ones first.

Blankets are fine if you get them get the cellular ones as the holes make them safer if they pull them over their face. DD kicked them around in the hospital so grobags were much less stressful. They're also useful when breast feeding as if they fall asleep on you, you can put them down and don't need to rearrange anything or tuck them in.

They look so cute too, like a colourful little slug Smile

I used cellular blankets until DS (50th centile) was about 8 wks as I felt it was easier to control the temp by adding or removing layers and he didn't move much anyway as a newborn. From 8-10 wks on (especially as I now have a rolling, kicking wriggler!) I have used Grobags as have all my mum & dad friends. They are safer in that they can't be kicked off etc so cause a choking/suffocation hazard but can sometimes be large on newborns so slip down (Gro have the buttons on the arms to help with this) hence my waiting until DS was a little bigger to use. Congratulations! 😁

Its a really hard one to call before your baby is here. When my daughter was born she hated to be swaddled and only liked loose blankets so the safest option was sleeping bags. As far as overheating goes you can get sleeping bags with different togs (thickness) so that shouldn't be a problem. My daughter is nearly 2 and still sleeps in S Bs. I have different ones depending on weather and always keep an eye on the room temperature. Honestly only you know what's right for your lo when they arrive so any advice I'd take on the chin. At the end of the day as long as your baby is comfortable and as safe as they can be then that's all that matters. Good luck and congratulations!

Grobags are fantastic but if you’re due in June then standard 2.5 tog sleeping bags may well be too warm. Get some 1.0 tog ones too. Be aware too that Gro recommend they are used only from 4kg / 8lb 13oz, so if you have a small baby you may not be able to use them right away.

Here’s the clothing guide for what babies should wear underneath: gro.co.uk/download/grobag-wear-guide/

We've used the grosnugs overnight since she was born 3.5 weeks ago. They're great!

The newborn snugs are usable from like 5lbs upwards.

Thanks everyone, I have got some cellular blankets so could use them at first and I’m thinking of getting a lower tog smaller sleep bag for the summer months as the others I already have are 0-6 month 2.5 tog ones.

Hello, I've used sleep bags since day one with my lo he's 5 months now and still in them, if it's a hot night I just put him in one with out a grow on and just a vest! He loves them! Wish you all the best xxx

OP, both of my babies were born during heatwaves and in the very early days I swaddled with arms out in big muslins. Possibly not to be recommended if you have any history of hip dysplasia in the family but it can be done very safely if not too tight.

HappyPunky · 06/03/2019 10:27

You can get 0.5 tog grobags that are sheet thickness for the summer (sorry I misread your OP and you're having a summer baby)
