How soon is too soon to buy baby items eg clothes?

So I'm 14+2 weeks and having twins. Money is quite tight so I will be getting almost everything except the car seats and mattresses pre owned.

I seem a great deal on newborn baby clothes on ebay and I couldn't help it, I bought the bundle! Now I'm worried because I've always been superstitious and I've been told that buying baby items before birth is just asking for trouble.

Am I too early to buy items for my twins? I'm a first time mum.

I bought almost everything before my dd was born; as I wanted to spread the cost of items; i bought things each month - the only thing I bought (but didn't keep at my house) was her pram through superstition

Congratulations Thanks

Buy them as soon as you like! Superstitions aren’t a real thing. There is no risk of “jinxing” anything by buying too soon. Honestly. It’s just made up woo shit. Enjoy your pregnancy. Enjoy buying for your babies.

beforeihit30 · 02/03/2019 11:33

There’s never a particular ‘right’ time to buy, especially when good deals are concerned. I’m at a similar point pregnancy-wise and the only reason I’ve not bought anything yet is because I really want a bit of a clear out before boxes and packages start arriving!

The more costly the item, the more it’s worth getting it when you see a good deal. We know now which buggy we want to buy, for example, and how much it costs. It doesn’t often get discounted so if I do see a very good deal then I’ll buy it then and there.

I’m not superstitious but I do understand the worry, but nothing you do will cause anything bad to happen Flowers Enjoy preparing!

Cosmogirl86 · 02/03/2019 11:38

Thank you everyone! I'm just excited about the babies and was worried I was jumping ahead too much! Spreading the cost is a really big reason for me starting early. My babies will have everything they need, I will just source the best value.

Congratulations! I think spreading the shopping costs through pregnancy is a good idea, especially if you see a deal!

Thatsnotmyotter · 02/03/2019 12:02

We used cloth nappies and I started buying nappies where I saw good offers from about 12 weeks. Clothes probably slightly later but I was definitely throwing the odd packet of vests or babygrows in the trolley at the supermarket pretty early on. Like you say, it’s just about spreading the cost.

sohypnotic · 02/03/2019 12:05

Get yourself to some mum2mum sales, basically indoor car boot sales all over country of just baby/young child stuff. Ridiculous savings to be made, and you actually get to see the item. I've picked up virtually brand new packs of 5 vests for 50p, unopened books, winter coats for £2 etc. NCT and others also do a similar type sale things. You usually have to pay £1-2 entry but it has always been worth it. My baby is 16months and I'm off to another sale this afternoon!

flashbac · 02/03/2019 12:09

I would wait at least until the anomaly scan at 20 weeks.
I lost mine due to cord stricture at 16 weeks. Coming home to baby things would have made the pain worse. Im so glad I didn't buy anything. It's not always down to superstition.

Disneymum1993 · 02/03/2019 12:33

My first i waited until after 12 weeks, second was as soon as we knew so 5 weeks and this time my third i have pram bought not in house ,crib, and started with clothes etc as need to spread costs and have a dd starting school when new babys due so its helped to be organised

Cosmogirl86 · 02/03/2019 12:54

@flashbac I'm so sorry for your loss. That must have been a very difficult time for you. I appreciate your insight.

I think I'll continue to keep a look out, but buy larger items closer to the time

Don't forget, you will receive loads of clothes as gifts, so I wouldn't buy any actual clothes.
As it's quite early on in your pregnancy, why don't you just put money aside when you can spare it so that once the babies arrive you can buy the things you haven't been gifted already.
You honestly don't need half the things that you might think. If you're not breast feeding, I'd but a perfect prep machine, as it will save you a massive amount of time, particularly in the night when you've possibly got 2 crying babies waiting to be fed! Also, most formulas are the same, don't be fooled by clever advertising.
Get either a set of drawers with a changing area on top, or put the changing mat on top of ordinary drawers, near the cot. Your back will thank you for not having to change on the bed or floor.
Lidl nappies are as good as pampers.
If friends ask you what you need, don't say 'oh it's ok, I've got everything'. Tell them!

coral13 · 02/03/2019 14:12

I've started buying some clothes. I'm mainly getting clothes from supermarkets so when I go, if I see something I really like I get it. If I wait til nearer the time, they won't do it any more.

(18 weeks)

coral13 · 02/03/2019 14:14

(I know people will buy you lots of clothes but quite frankly I'm really fussy and much prefer unisex things so would rather make sure we have lots that I actually like)

TwoRoundabouts · 02/03/2019 15:23

I actually got given a lot of clothes as well as buying some. I'm now passing them on to others I know who are pregnant. Most of mine up to 3 months were unisex.

I change my daughter on the floor. Neither myself or my partner have back issues and we are older parents. My daughter has been trying to roll over from her legs to her head from about 3 months so it feels much safer changing her on the floor. The only thing I would suggest is you have more than one changing area in your home. That way if you hear an explosion you can deal with it without having to run up/down a flight of stairs.

Halfpint1985 · 02/03/2019 21:54

I have my little one kitted out up to 3 months, his pram is on order and due a few weeks before due date. Bottles, steriliser, rocker, crib, Moses basket, you name it...... All bought now ready..... I'm 19weeks on Tuesday. My reasoning for having bought so early however is due to have 3 other children. Two have birthdays before my due date so I wanted to be able to concentrate on their presents and also half terms etc which always bloody require money to be spent. It was all a money juggling tactic for me and also most things bought whilst on whoopsie deals.
I don't think there is a right time to buy, just as and when you have the money I think is best 😊
Massive congratulations and enjoy your pregnancy 😌

I started buying stuff after the 20 week anomaly scan. Pregnancy can be a rollercoaster though no guarantee with anything really is there.

We also looked at the higher priced things and as soon as we saw it on promo etc then ordered it. Worked out well with it falling over the festive season and we got some great promos on travel system and other things!

Some mother care stores are closing down too so if you have a local one closing down might be worth taking a look at some
Things there - picked up some good stuff today from the local one closing near us & saw great discounts on higher ticket items.

Bouncer4me · 03/03/2019 16:39

I gathered up this lot from gumtree, free cycle and Facebook etc about a year before we even got pregnant so nothing is too early in my mind lol. It cost us about £25 for it all 😀 so a massive saving

WiseBlankie · 03/03/2019 16:55

I haven't bought anything yet (20 weeks) and since I am high risk, I won't for a while. It would just be too devastating. I did get some stuff already from friends. If baby is still there at 28-30 weeks, then I may order some of the things I really need.

If I had not developed complications, I would have started shopping around now I think! But I don't think it's wrong to shop whenever you want! :)

Stinkytoe · 03/03/2019 16:57

I was so paranoid with my twins that I didn’t get anything until about 34 weeks.

They were born at 36 weeks so it was just as well I’d got on with it.

With my first child I started shopping after the anomaly scan.

Cosmogirl86 · 03/03/2019 17:01

I am really scared about both my twins
This isn't my first pregnancy, but it is the first I've carried this long. I think I'll wait until after anomaly scan before buying anything else

I appreciate that you want to spread the cost but you can still save the money each month and then buy what you need once the babies are safely here. Definitely do get what is essential for the first week or two but you don’t need to worry beyond that.

As someone whose baby died in the neonatal unit, coming home to all the constant reminders is horribly painful and difficult to move beyond but it has nothing to do with superstition.

I hope all goes well.

Gobletoffire · 03/03/2019 18:35

I bought a pack of white babygrows after an early scan at 8 weeks, just because I was so excited. Up until my 20 week scan I only bought the odd cheaper thing here and there, like newborn nappies. It wasn’t until after 20 weeks we bought the bigger things like the pram and car seat.
