Blood loss - miscarriage

I've been bleeding for nine days now, I'd say a heavy period type level with a bit of clotting. Just now I felt a gush and it came through a night time thickness towel and my trousers on to the sofa. Went to the loo and the whole towel was soaked with red blood and there was some big clots when I wiped. Is this normal? Should I be worried? I had a chorionic bump (hematoma) so am wondering if it's to do with that?! Although they didn't mention that'd cause any issues with passing the pregnancy.

Would anyone mind if I shared a picture? I'd rather avoid A&E on a Fri night... but was alarmed at the amount of blood loss, particularly after nine days of constant bleeding...

Oh you poor thing, i didn't want to read and run. I hope someone with more knowledge can help than me as I've not been through it.

Hello

I’ve also had a hematoma and have had alot of bleeding, off and on since 9 weeks. Am currently 14 +4, last week was pretty awful with a heavy bleed nearly every other day. Are you having cramps too? How far along are you? Xx

sophied1983 · 01/03/2019 18:54

Hiya - sorry, my post was misleading. I've definitely had/am having a miscarriage - was confirmed at EPU last Tuesday (was 9+4 at scan). But am worried about the level of blood loss after bleeding for nine days already.

Oh I’m so sorry you’re going through this Flowers Xx

pitterpatterbaby · 01/03/2019 18:58

To be fair mine had tapered off by 9 days. Did they give you a contact number for epu? Are you in any discomfort? Take your temp too?

sophied1983 · 01/03/2019 18:59

Feel alright on the whole. Had cramps on Tues which were so bad I could barely stand up. Would you mind if I shared a photo?!

The amount you can bleed with a miscarriage is pretty surprising. Hope you get resolved soon.

mussie · 01/03/2019 19:47

@sophied1983 you can share a photo if you like, but your description is pretty good without it! That does sound like an unusually large amount of blood - however, if it's just a one off and goes back to being very light bleeding, I wouldn't worry. However if it keeps going, I would phone for advice in case it is a haemorrhage. Hopefully it's the former and the bleeding is nearly over!

CatchingBabies · 01/03/2019 19:52

You can send me a photo if you like. Have you passed the fetus that you know of?

pitterpatterbaby · 01/03/2019 19:52

I can remember having severe cramps. The epu midwife said something (a clot I guess) had become stuck in my cervix. They gave me something to soften the cervix and she gave me an internal to free it. This was however 24hrs or so into a miscarriage. Bleeding can continue for sometime but 9 days in and this heavy perhaps needs checking.

If you are feeling ok generally and cramping is reducing that's a good sign. Can you take your temp? It will be elevated if you've an infection?

sophied1983 · 01/03/2019 20:12

Hope you're not eating!

The clotting that came with it I actually felt come out. Maybe that was the pregnancy and all the other bleeding has been building up to it?

OP posts:
pitterpatterbaby · 01/03/2019 20:23

Has the bleeding continued like that or is it more period like now?

sophied1983 · 01/03/2019 20:26

It's still quite a bright red, compared to periods which are more that dark red sort of colour, but not coming through towel/clothes now (been sitting on a towel just in case).

Is it still that heavy? Have you passed the fetus? If it’s staying that heavy you need to go to A&E as that is excessive and there could be retained products causing this.

sophied1983 · 01/03/2019 20:36

I wonder if what I passed was it, I felt it come out (gross). Was only 9+4 so wasn't that far along, but guess it'd still be something more than the stringy tissue bits you get during a period say?

CatchingBabies · 01/03/2019 20:41

It may look like a clot as blood could have clotted around it. I don’t know if you feel able to do this but breaking the clot up can show you if it’s a clot rather than any conception products.

How do you feel in yourself? Any shivers, lightheaded feeling etc? I personally feel you should err on the side of caution and get seen as that photo is an excessive amount of blood to be losing after 9 days especially as you describe the previous blood loss as “heavy” period. If you have not passed the fetus this can continue and can become dangerous.

I know it’s the absolute last thing you want to do sorry, did EPAU give you a contact number? Where I work women would come straight up to the gynae ward rather than being seen at A&E in your situation so hopefully your hospital has something similar.

Froghead360 · 01/03/2019 20:50

Please go to hospital, this happened to me post a mis-carriage and I had to have a blood transfusion in the end - I left it too long not wanting to make a fuss - don't feel bad just go.

miki123 · 01/03/2019 22:13

Agreed, Please get this checked out urgently. You could have retained products which could lead to serious infections if left untreated.

Squiff70 · 01/03/2019 22:41

That's a lot of blood, please go to A&E and just get checked out. I'm so sorry you're going through this! Sending you hugs x

pitterpatterbaby · 05/03/2019 19:18
