Worried about toxoplasmosis in pregnancy

Hi, sorry about the panicky post: I recently found out that I’m seven weeks pregnant and have been trying my best to eat well and avoid everything you should. However, my OH cooked dinner the other night and forgot to wash the sweet potatoes we were having. He thought it was ok because he removed the contents of the potato and we didn’t eat the skin. However as this is my first pregnancy and I literally have no idea what I’m doing, I’m now worried that this has increased the risk of toxoplasmosis. Just wondered if anyone might have any advice on this and can tell me if I’m just being paranoid/overly anxious. Thank you!

First of all the potatoes were cooked which would kill any of the bacteria, second of all you didn’t eat the skin anyway. The chances are absolutely tiny. You can have a blood test to check if you want but the doctor may refuse as there really isn’t a need to panic over this the risk is absolutely tiny.
It’s more important for fruit and salads as they are not cooked.

I eat sweet potatoes all the time (including the skin) and never wash them. As pp said, cooking destroys the bacteria in any event. You'll be fine!

I guarantee you’re fine after the sweet potato mash.

If you’re going to get it, and it’s incredibly rare, then it would be from undercooked/raw meat (particularly pork, lamb or venison), raw shellfish (like oysters), from soil (say if you’d handled the sweet potato straight out of the ground and not washed your hands), or cat poo.

If you’re feeling this overly anxious about what sounds like a tasty dinner maybe talk to your midwife.

Toxoplasmosis isn't a bacteria, it's a parasite, but as PP have said, there's no risk from what you have described so please don't worry!

Thank you so much everyone! I really appreciate you all getting back to me Smile

Yes oops my bad it is a parasite not bacteria.
I agree with PP please talk to your midwife or GP if you begin to suffer with worsening anxiety. X

IIRC it's only dangerous if you've never had it before and get it for the first time in pregnancy. That's rare in itself, as most adults have already had it. You're fine, don't worry.
