Has anyone taken omega 3 in pregnancy...ive read good things online...But when i asked my g.p she said "Hold on a minute and i will look it up" (Types in her own google search) 🙄 It says theres no evidence to say if its good or bad...so i would say no!!...Annoying...i want to get as much nutrtion to this baby as possible...Im eating well...taking folic acid...But i would love to give the supposed benefits of fish oils aswell...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Surely they wouldnt sell it if it was dangerous.

Unfortunately I don’t think the manufacturers considered the potential danger to my fanjo of having a gigantic-headed baby lol.

Now doing well at school though...

The child, not my fanjo.

I took a vegetarian version of pregnacare. The health visitor told me my baby could have a risk of being retarded as I didn’t eat oily fish (I didn’t). It was about 19 years ago. Both babies had heads over the 100th centile.

ZandathePanda · 01/03/2019 20:59

....Both teenage DC are very bright. One still has a larger than average head.

Thankyou all very much...Really apreciated info...I can see omega 3 has his benefits...but im thinking maybe a daily intake can maybe result in a large head?...So i think im going to take one or 2 a week...That will meet in the middle for me lol

I had a scan appointment yesterday and the sonographer suggested Omega 3 supplements IF I didn’t eat a lot of oily fish. I explained that I had heard it wasn’t necessary but like the PP, she said that it was v good for brain & eye development.
She recommended a supermarket brand as they’re essentially the same and cheaper than the more expensive ones. Hope this is helpful!

I've been part of science team doing mega reviews on possible benefits of Omega3 supplements.

As a result I no longer believe in any of the claimed benefits, except for people who are risk of high deficiency (eg IBD problems or obese). Or people who take n3 for at least 5 yrs (and even then the benefits are statistically significant but almost certainly not important).

I think I'm just saying that coz pregnancy is such a hassle. I don't think anyone needs to feel obliged to take omega-3 if you're already trying to follow so many other strict rules.

Good news: we didn't find evidence of harm. PCBs & heavy metals were our concerns.

Bad news: commercial plans to harvest omega-3 from krill in polar regions to avoid the PCBs & heavy metals. :( Makes me hope, for environment sake, that everyone stops taking them.

MedSchoolRat that’s interesting. When I was pregnant with my first in 2000, the ‘fish oil’ mania had just started and even Heinz started putting it in baked beans. Obviously being veggie from age 10, I didn’t want to start eating fish. Heinz soon got a veggie backlash and dropped it but it shows how prevalent hype can be. I remember from uni days that they said 30% fish in the Atlantic tested positive for all types of cancers etc from heavy metal poisoning so felt a bit better but the HV made me really fearful I wasn’t eating fish. Afterwards Dd did not sleep very well and HV suggested one bottle of formula last thing at night (didn’t work!). I noticed that the baby formulas in the local supermarket all have fish oil in them nowadays. I liken it to autism and vaccines - once there’s a supposed link it’s difficult to stop it.
