Spotting and progesterone suppositories?

Hi everyone - im curious really whether anyone has experienced similarly to me. I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant after IVF and had a bleed (red blood) on Saturday followed by brown spotting ever since. We were amazed when we had a scan on Monday to see our baby with a heartbeat measuring perfectly! I know brown blood is old blood but I’ll feel a lot more comfortable once it goes away. I have a new theory that it may be being caused by the progesterone suppositories I’m prescribed. I’ve heard that they can cause bleeding when used vaginally, however, I am using them rectally. Could this be a thing? I recall that when I was on the progesterone only contraceptive pill I used to get similar looking brown spotting. Could there be a link?

I would be really keen to know the answer to this too. I googled it a week ago but found nothing. I had some bleeding too and I take Cyclogest rectally. I had a scan and all was ok and doctor said he couldn’t see reason for the bleed. I can see how they would irritate the cervix if inserted vaginally but not so sure about rectally

Bleeding during the first trimester is more common with ivf pregnancies. Only sometimes is an explanation found.

The pessaries can irritate the cervix and cause red spotting - so your bleeding is unlikely to be from the pessaries. There are dozens of things that can cause bleeding in pregnancy though - and not all bad!

Thanks for your replies! I suppose I will just never know what’s going on but it would be nice to know to put my mind at ease!

I spotted brown blood quite frequently in my first trimester, particularly the day after having sex.
If it's just spotting, brown (not red), and isn't accompanied by abdominal pain, it's probably normal, but you can call your GP to check.
