Sharp pain under right rib

I've had a sharp pain on and off under my rib today. I'm 29 weeks pregnant.

When I press down on the area I can't feel baby so I don't think it's how he is positioned.

What else could it be? Has anyone else experienced this?

Have you any other symptoms like swelling or headaches? If it persists contact your midwife I think that can also be a sign of pre eclampsia

Bigonesmallone3 · 26/02/2019 19:13

Could be a gas pain, try drinking some water and burping..
Or try to fart

amrscot · 26/02/2019 19:17

@babystripes nope no other symptoms! Just this terrible sharp pain under the rib 😢

Gallstones?

Jeffjefftyjeff · 26/02/2019 19:21

Probably not this but look up signs of a pulmonary embolism to rule it out.

amrscot · 26/02/2019 19:23

@Jeffjefftyjeff it doesn't hurt when I breathe in though?

@melissasummerfield is this a symptom of gallstones? That never crossed my mind

Does it go away if you lie on your left side? I had this from about 28 weeks and it was because my son had such long legs he had wedged his foot under my ribs. (He is now 11, taller than me and wearing size-9 shoes). I could never feel him there from the outside but the midwives could.

If it is that you have a long-legged baby, then I found anything that stretched me out helped. I did yoga, and hung off the dangling hand rails on the tube on my way home from work. I also had a curved pillow that I sat with round my right side which seemed to help. And lying on my left relieved it, just because it seemed to shoogle him down a bit. It was horrible though. By the time I was full term I was throwing up with the pain. Which is probably not what you want to hear, sorry!

I had this, I think it was gallstones/gallbladder. I just couldn’t tolerate fatty foods etc when pregnant.

amrscot · 26/02/2019 19:32

@RitaFairclough gosh yes it does!! When I have it at night I reposition myself and the pain seems to go so maybe it is bub causing it.

I just didn't think it was because I couldn't feel anything there, just the pain

Get your bp checked. I had this at 28 weeks, no other obvious symptoms, but luckily had a routine midwife appointment and I had preeclampsia. I was sent to hospital and didn't come out again for 2 months.

jcmayj · 27/02/2019 00:08

@birdling hi, i am OP but have NC'd.

The pain has gone for now and it seems to subside whenever I stretch. I'm in bed currently lay on my left side and I can't feel it now.

Do you think it still could be PE or perhaps it was just baby? I have no idea as I've never been pregnant before so this is new to me

birdling · 27/02/2019 00:13

Probably not then. My pain was severe and I couldn't get into any position that would relieve it.
Glad you're feeling better.
Any other symptoms though, get checked out Smile

jcmayj · 27/02/2019 00:17

@birdling thank you! Also, 2 months in hospital sounds horrendous Sad

RitaFairclough · 27/02/2019 09:24

I would definitely mention it to your midwife just to put your mind at rest.

I had this during my pregnancy. I had physio. It was everything shifting as the baby was growing.
