Small bump = small baby?

I know it depends on mums height and weight a lot but does a small bump mean the baby will be small? I'm carrying a lot neater and smaller with my second than I did with my first so I'm wondering if this baby will be smaller. My first was a girl and this baby is a boy so surely this baby should be bigger? Can small bumps be deceiving?

I had a very small bump with DS and everyone commented on how tiny it was. Produced a 7lb 2oz baby so average size.

This time round I’m 36 weeks and measuring exactly on the 50th centile but again being told by everyone my bump is tiny.

PrincessDaff · 26/02/2019 12:59

I had a tiny bump. I had hyperemesis throughout my pregnancy though so didn't put on much weight but my ds was 8"11 and has always been in the 94th percentile for length so not always haha. He was just tucked in a weird position I think.

My friend was the opposite and had a giant bump, everyone kept telling her how the baby would be huge. He came out 6"2.

Good luck with your second and congratulations.

I wore a fitted bridesmaid dress (size 8) which had been measured and made a year before, and I was 7 months pregnant. There was literally no bump at all. Baby was over 8lbs.

Ha no. I had a very small bump (and I am smallish myself at 5ft 3) and birthed an 8lb 13 hefflalump. Bump was so small I went to hospital to give birth at 41w comfortably wearing a size 12 T-shirt.

With my first i was always measuring big, every appointment the midwife would comment on how big he was going to be (scaring me half to death) and he came out 6 pound 10. Had to send my mum out for tiny baby clothes as none of the ones i brought for my supposed whopper fitted!
This time i am measuring smaller so im thinking i will be the opposite and no doubt have a big baby!

TeaforTwoBiscuitOrThree · 26/02/2019 13:13

I had a diddy bump and had a diddy baby (5lbs).

HoppingPavlova · 26/02/2019 13:15

Nope, I had mega bumps and small babies. I’m not counting the one where I had polyhydramnios there either as that was an anomaly.

I’ve known a few people with really small, neat bumps and realistically we mentally estimated around 6 pounds, nope all whoppers with nine under 9 pounds.

So, I don’t think bump size is at all indicative of the size baby will be.

In my second pregnancy too and my bump is smaller this time. From my scans and bump measurements baby is on the smaller side.
Dont know the gender this time but my first was a boy and my bump was huge and he was fairly big at 8lb 9!
I think it can depend on body shape and after a 1st pregnancy your body shape might change so may affect how you carry with the second.

ReaganSomerset · 26/02/2019 13:17

No, I had a much bigger bump than a friend of mine, but it was all water. She had very little fluid and delivered a 10lb baby (vaginal birth, they had no idea how big he was going to be) whereas mine was only 7lb.

Lauren83 · 26/02/2019 13:20

I got told all through my pregnancy my bump was tiny and I got paranoid he wasn't growing, ended up being induced at 38 weeks as he was getting too big and he was born 9lbs, they just said I was all baby and he was packed pretty tight. He is 13 months now and has been on top centile since birth

TheWashingMachine · 26/02/2019 13:23

My bump never grew after 32 weeks, although the baby was only 6lb, she did arrive at 37 weeks.

Bluebell9 · 26/02/2019 14:33

My friend had a tiny bump, she could still zip up her pre-pregnancy coat. Her baby was over 9lb but she was back in her old jeans the next day! He bump was all baby.
My Dsis was huge and her baby was 6lb.

Lizbiz89 · 26/02/2019 15:41

Thanks for the replies! Sounds like bump size doesn't mean much at all. Got a 34 week scan tomorrow so will get more of an insight into babies weight. Although the scans were never right with my dd so I'm not holding up much hope.

My friend was sent through to hospital after one of her midwife appointments after her bump was measuring 3 weeks behind. By the end of her pregnancy she could barely it behind the steering wheel and went 3 days overdue with a gorgeous 8lb baby girl.

I had a tiny bump with my second baby. Had a load of growth scans etc as the midwives were concerned about it. Growth scan at 33 weeks gave an estimated full term weight of 4lb 8oz if he continued following the current line on the growth charts....out he popped at 36 weeks, perfectly healthy, 6lbs 9oz Confused He’d have been a beast if I’d have gone to 40 weeks!

ILiveForNachos · 26/02/2019 20:15

Small bump compared to some of my other NCT lot, 10lb2oz baby. Their’s were all 7-8lbs. I’m tall so lots of room for a baby to hide.

SoyDora · 26/02/2019 20:18

Boys aren’t necessarily bigger than girls. I had 2 girls first, 8lbs and 8lbs 8oz. Third was a boy, and I also went 12 days overdue. I was convinced he was going to be around 10lb. He was my smallest baby at 7lbs 13oz.

Walnutwhipster · 26/02/2019 20:50

Ds1 weighed 8lb7oz. I was rushed to A&E with a severe allergic reaction. The doctor asked if there was any chance I could be pregnant before he gave me an injection. DH said yes. (I was struggling for breath) The doctor then asked when I was due, to which DH responded, "next week!" I was then taken to the antenatal ward (at that time you had to be at least 24 weeks to be on there) and one of the other patients asked why I was on that ward. I am 5'3" and was a size 8-10. I felt almost robbed that I never showed. DS arrived three days later.

crunchie12 · 26/02/2019 21:33

Nope! Small bump - 8lb 13oz baby!
