Hi, I'm 25 weeks pregnant and trying to be careful with my weight as I already have a high BMI. I don't have the best diet but I'm trying my best to be good and eat more fruit and veg.

So far I've put on about 10/11lbs. Is this too much? Is it okay? It's my first pregnancy so I'd appreciate some guidance!

Would you mind telling me how much weight you gained?

Thanks!

Hi there. Try not to stress too much. 10/11 pounds doesn’t seem too bad really it could be fluid retention too. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in both pregnancies and therefore had to follow a diabetic diet which did wonders for my BMI postnatally. Overall during my second pregnancy I put on 6lbs however following the diabetic diet meant I actually lost fat while pregnant healthily. My first pregnancy however I wasn’t diagnosed until 35 weeks and had gained a substantial amount of weight. I stressed too but honestly it all worked out in the end. Be healthy, eat healthy, keep active, make good choices and you and baby will be fine. Look at the diabetic diet though it really works. And isn’t too hard when you get going. Look after yourself x

Thank you, I will look at the diabetic diet as I have to have the glucose tolerance test too. Where do I find out about this? X

Surely you should only be on the diabetic diet when pregnant if you have diabetes? Have you checked your weight gain on here? It's a great site for tracking your info. www.babycenter.com/pregnancy-weight-gain-estimator

I have a high BMI and I've been extremely careful this pregnancy as I wasn't with my son. It's been amazing for me and I feel 10 times healthier this time round despite starting weight being higher. I'm 30 weeks and 7lb lighter than I started. Instead of the diabetes diet which you might not need you should look into slimming world which is recommended throughout pregnancy. 10-11lb seems ok though so well done! By this point with my son I reckon i was up almost 2stone! I've found this website really useful to check my weight gain Xxxx www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html

Hi there guys. Diabetic diet is a healthy living diet that involves exchanging some carbs for healthier options ie white bread to wholemeal. Not cutting out just cutting down. Cutting down on amount of pasta and adding extra veg and protein. As well as avoiding sugary treats and exchanging for things like cheese and crackers etc. Healthy carbs little sugar and lots of healthy veg and some fruit and lean meats and protein. It’s a lifestyle change rather than a diet. Don’t let the term diabetic diet but you off. It’s extremely safe and healthy. I was advised to follow this diet after pregnancy and haven’t looked back. Lots of energy, lower bmi, blood pressure has even improved. If you do some research online you will find some great sites and recipes. Good luck and don’t stress do what suits you. I’m only telling you my own experience and what helped me. But this is 100% safe and is a healthy lifestyle change that my nurse has recommended not only during pregnancy but after. She also informed that most people with a higher bmi should follow as a preventative measure for type 2 diabetes in later life.

Oh. I assumed a diabetic diet was a proper diet for diabetics. What you describe just sounds like what everyone's diet should be.

Missnm1 · 26/02/2019 12:23

Pbobs- I know. I too would have said the same pre babies. But it has opened my eyes! I learned new things that should really be taught at school. Maybe it is now lol but not while I was at school Smile. I could never understand why I had a higher bmi than recommended considering I didn’t eat too much or too badly. I was just eating the wrong things. Too many bad carbs which turned to sugar (which is harder to shift than fats). Also if you add some protein to your wholemeal toast in the morning ie chicken or ham or grilled bacon with fat cut off it helps to counteract the carbs within the bread.

Yeah Missnm1 - I do wonder why it isn't taught more at school. I have a pretty much 100% Mediterranean diet so I'm happy with that. But I agree - there should be more info out there on good eating rather than dieting.

I have a low/healthy bmi but currently 29 weeks and I've put on a stone and 2 pounds. Midwife isn't concerned and neither am I xx

Babyno2mamabear · 26/02/2019 19:43

@miss that actually sounds great! I'm going to look into it more xx

Joebloggswazere · 26/02/2019 19:48

On my first I put on loads, I learned my lesson (it’s sonhard to shift) and on my second I joined slimming world from the start of my pregnancy. I gave birth lighter than when got pregnant! I was a size 16 when I got pregnant, size 12 when I gave birth. DS came out a good 7lbs 14. Honestly the best thing I did as ate so healthy throughout.

Firsttimeuser12 · 26/02/2019 19:52

I've just been eating my usual amount, healthy BMI and weight before. Somehow put on 2stone but it's all on my bump and midwifes not mentioned it so hopefully it's normal

jcq17 · 26/02/2019 20:06

That sounds ok to me. I'm 19 weeks and iv gained 2 pound so far.

pancakes22 · 26/02/2019 20:33

I'm 22 weeks and have put on 10 pounds
