Rib Pain, Trouble Breathing

I'm really struggling with rib pain and I have no idea what it is! I'm currently 25 weeks, and the pain is more apparent after I have eaten. Lying down and stretching out eases it a bit, sitting up straight is agony. It's more prominent on my right side. This evening, the pain comes up all the way through my chest in to my collarbone. It's just awful. When the pain is at its worst, I'm struggling to breathe, too.

I just wondered if anybody had experienced this? DP wants me to book a doctor's appointment but I don't want to waste an appointment if this is just part and parcel of pregnancy.

Could it be heartburn/acid?

Have you tried anything to relieve the symptoms?

TokenGinger · 24/02/2019 18:37

I've had lots of heartburn and it feels completely different to that. I've had Rennies/Gaviscon. It feels more like a muscular/bone pain. It's really hard to describe. It almost feels like the muscles around the ribs are bruised or something. Stretching out seems to help it a little, but the trigger is definitely a full tummy, so I'm trying to just eat little amounts to avoid the pain.

It sounds more extreme than what I was thinking but could baby be breech? I'm currently 34 weeks and my little lady has had her head under my ribs for weeks and it can be very sore. Especially if I lean forward when reading or some thing like that. It can feel bruised for a while then ease off and then be back again in a couple of hours

Obviously after eating there is less room so could be an indication and I've suffered a lot more with breathlessness due to her being breech but I am asthmatic too

Strange, it may be the baby growing and squashing everything else but I would go to the GP. It never hurts to get your mind out as ease

DSis had costochondritis when she was pregnant, your problems sound like that. But you really ought to go see your GP just in case.

Thank you ladies. I'll definitely book in to see the GP.

Breach is a good suggestion, leaning forwards does the same to me too.

I've never heard of the Costo (I can't see the full name now I've clicked on the reply screen) condition. How interesting!

I'll definitely get booked in to see the GP and thank you for your replies ❤️

Get in touch with the hospital - there's the remote chance of pulmonary embolism which is a life-threatening condition.

Echomama · 24/02/2019 22:11

I have this!
My first was breach and I never got this feeling.
This one is head down and I've had it on and off, mostly on, since around 25ish weeks.
I can tell you it is most definitely a foot in the ribs! At least in my case.
Feels like the muscles in between the ribs have all been bruised and hurts to breathe. Bending is worse when the pain is present, but does eventually ease off.
Joy's of pregnancy!

Could it be trapped wind? Trapped wind can be felt in shoulders and collar bones and can be agony.
With it being related to food, it could be possible.

I'd still contact gp though to get checked. Xx

Leafy2018 · 25/02/2019 05:10

I had this - I had my baby 3 weeks ago and at beginning of the week I gave birth I ended up in hospital as the pain was so bad. It went right up into my shoulder blades and was impossible to take a full breath. I was vomiting the pain was so bad. A few days prior to this I had a bruised feeling under my ribs. They were concerned about placental abruption (unlikely but definitely get checked) but in the end I think we went with the MW suggestion of pain being due to baby's position and how parts of you have never been touched before so are extremely sensitive. Get checked - I was given codine and that did help a bit. X

Leafy2018 · 26/02/2019 17:32

How are you OP? Hope all is well now Thanks

TokenGinger · 27/02/2019 21:57

Thank you, ladies. Sorry it's taken a while to reply - I forgot my password 🙄

I still have the pain but it's not as bad as it's been since I've been eating less (little and often rather than large meals). My GP can't fit me in for two weeks, by which point I'll have already seen my obstetrician, so I am going to monitor the pain and if it becomes really bad again before I see the obstetrician, I will go to a walk-in centre but as it is right now, I feel much better, thankfully.

The joys of pregnancy are wonderful 🙈😂
