Has anyone been prescribed codeine in pregnancy?

I was yesterday from the consultant as I have quite bad SPD, and it hasn't touched the pain but it has knocked me for 6! I've had 3 naps today 😩

I'm going to stop taking it as that can't be good?! But just wondering if anyone else has had a better experience?

I'm 32 + 3 xx

I was knocking codeine back like sweeties for my spd during my two pregnancies, I will be honest it didn't take the pain away but did take the edge off. Both children fine and stopped it no bother once they were born.

Not pregnant, but just wanted to say it can be very constipating so drink lots of water, and maybe prunes on your cereal.

some people just react badly to opiates.
pregnant or not.

InACloudOfGlitter · 22/02/2019 13:59

Yes but it didn't work so I was given tramadol.

That didn't work either but at least it knocked me out enough to get an actual nights sleep.

I have a healthy 3 year old.

Maybe I should stick it out then and build it up a bit? I've only had three tablets in about 20 hours so I guess I'll need more to help with the pain?

Trouble is I'm anemic as well so that's making me tired too, I just feel like all I am good for is sleeping!

I was given co-codamol and told to use sparingly as baby could be born addicted. It didn't help the pain and I noticed it reduced baby's movements, which scared me. So they gave me drugs, but the gp was very adamant that I shouldn't use them?! This was the same gp who told me during a miscarriage that I should have more so that they could run tests.... asshole.

greenelephantscarf · 22/02/2019 14:13

codeine should usually not be given in the 3rd trimester and when breastfeeding as some babies react badly to it.

but do listen to the consultant.
if the pain persists go back.
I assume you have done the other things already? like the dlt, physio, pillow supports...

SpinningSister · 22/02/2019 14:16

anything parAcetamol family never touches any pain for me either - I just had to live with it.
Only things that kill pain for me is ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen
Annoyingly can’t take those !

Yeah I've done all of the other suggestions, physio not really helpful. The ball has been the most helpful for me!

I was on morphine before, during and after my pregnancy.

Codeine is slightly higher risk than other opiates - your body converts it into morphine and (very very rarely) some people convert it too well and end up with a bigger dose than anticipated. This is more of a problem when breastfeeding as it passes into breastmilk.

It is not harmful to take opiates / opioids during pregnancy - the risk is that the baby will end up in withdrawal so its important to take the lowest dose you can manage on.

These meds do knock you out initially but you adjust - morphine doesn’t even make me drowsy any more.

I was prescribed codeine during pregnancy and it was absolutely useless!! I had maximum dose but the only relief I had was bouncing on my yoga ball basically constantly for 2 weeks!!

MissMoodyMoo · 22/02/2019 20:16

I was prescribed cocodamol 30/500 after sepsis whilst 35w. It resulted in reduced movements which has really dunnted my mental health
